Photos of children on office desks should be strongly discouraged. Taylor Swift should write some songs that aren't about ex-boyfriends. Unless they are Newfoundlands or St Bernards, rescue dogs are actually rescued dogs. Worse, when someone screenshares with you and we see the kiddies and dog on their desktop wallpaper. Yawn. Worse again, pic of kiddies and dog is their profile pic on Teams. No. One. Cares. Is a pic of a dog as your avatar on, say, a theatre based message board Ok? Asking for a friend....

This has given me a flashback to when the company I temp for, an exam board, changed the screensavers for the entire network of company computers from a selection of nice landscape photos to a selection of photos of children. They were in educational settings but I found it creepy as hell to have a selection of unknown children staring at me from my computer screen every time I locked/unlocked my computer. A number of people complained, including me. I got hell from HR for saying I don't like children so don't want to have photos of them staring at me - Apparently that's not a suitable thing to say if you work for an exam board. I don't see why. I had nothing to do with children in 12 years of temping. My jobs always involved data processing. - but at least they swapped to some less creepy photos, though children were still involved.

General message to working people. Don’t push your personal photos at other people at work. Headshot of you so we know who we’re talking to.. yes ok (but I don’t really care). Pics of you doing anything else. No.

Reminds me of the incredibly awkward time a woman I used to work with brought her wedding album in and asked me if I wanted to see it. I don’t think she was expecting me to say “umm… not really.” 🤭
She wasn't a newlywed or anything, and I do feel bad about being so thoughtless and tactlessly honest, but at the same time why would I want to look at an old book full of strangers?

Prior to March 2020, the higher-ups must have dreaded those afternoons when Angie from Accounts, or Steve from Sales, brought their newborn to the office. 90 hours of productivity gone in an instant!
"Can Aunty Sandra have a cuddle? Can she? Aren't you adorable? Yes you are. That was a big yawn. Yes it was..."

I'm mostly not a fan of the huge open-plan offices the company I temp for moved into a few years ago but they are useful for managing to keep well out of the way when people bring new babies in to show them off! I am deeply suspicious of babies & if I am made to hold one fear it will either be sick over me or scream the place down.

I once got into a bit of a disagreement with one colleague when another colleague was bringing her baby in and I suggested that it would be far better if she brought her dog instead as babies were boring and if they were ugly you had to say nice things about them, whereas it's a lot easier to find good things to say about a dog.

I had a few years where people on Facebook were having babies and my feed just consisted of baby pictures for months on end. I don't mind babies but I really don't need to them every day on social media!

Don't want to see babies in the office with everyone going awwwwww! Now when they bring dogs in its me going awwwww! I used to work in an open plan office which had loads more space than we needed and management were all dog fans and chilled about well behaved dog visitors, some of which became regulars. You could always tell because normally sensible people would be walking along as if they had a boring meeting to attend, start to smile then duck behind a bank of desks to give the good boy/girl a tummy tickle. The big boss's secretary's husband used to come in once a week to collect her on their way to do their "big shop" and always brought the dog in with him. My friend actually bought her own doggie biscuits to have on standby for this.

My two pet hate at the moment are anyone who uses social media to constantly complain to a company or service providers and insists on clogging the feed by adding a dot to the @. Once in a while, I would be fine with but I really don't want to know about how Virgin Media is crap or how South Western Railways has provided a poor service every single day!

Normally if you start a tweet with “@accountname”, your followers would only see this tweet if they also the followed the account that you had @. Putting .@ means that the tweet will show up on your followers’ timeline, regardless of whether they follow the other account. Basically used so everyone can see that such and such company is not very good.

I get this Sophie but I have found that some companies respond more quickly to a tweet rather than their website contact us page. In fact some companies are lightning fast via twitter.

In fact some companies are lightning fast via twitter. I think Sophie's point is about who else can see it besides the company in question... mutual followers of yourself and the company or all of your followers.

Surely the point is that the companies only respond at lightening speed because it's public. However, I take the point about repetition.
I wish there were a way to apply a time related mute to certain people on twitter. You can do it to words and while that doesn't work as well as it should, it is still handy if you want to avoid spoilers of a popular tv show etc.
But some people can become obsessively spammy over tedious things so I end up muting them if it goes on for too long. The challenge for me is to go back and check every now and then to see if they are talking about things that interest me again.

I confess I mute people if they start retweeting or posting anything remotely political because it becomes boring after a while. I know people have the right to express their opinion but if I wanted to see posts from say Owen Jones, I'd follow Owen Jones!

I've found the turn off retweets option useful for a couple of people I follow, opera critics whose reveiws I want to read but whose political retweets I don't.

Up there with the likes of Britney, Ariana Grande and Ed Sheeran as most prolific tweeters reposted. At one point was second on the list to Trumpy
