It's all a bit of a mess isn't it? But to be fair I presume that the quip about not having to sing at the BAFTAs, and her laughing response, was because she had to sing a song from Wild Rose at a previous BAFTA ceremony. Presumably that is terrifying - singing in front of all those industry professionals (thought Emilia Jones did really well last night). I’d be more nervous at singing for people who’d paid £250 of their own hard earned cash than a load of industry who are there on a freebie.

I don't get why some people are defending the theatre's position. If you are selling a show at a massively inflated price because of the two names given equal billing above the title, and then one of those star names - the one who is actually more in the news right now - is repeatedly absent, then a brief explanation of why, and better still advance warning for those of us for whom a theatre trip involves a trip to London and an overnight stay, would be expected. 'Jeffrey Bernard is Unwell'. It's not hard, even easier in the days of social media: just post it on your Twitter or Instagram.
The way people in this country just accept all sorts of crap whether from politicians or rip-off profiteering privatised companies or people charging you £50 to drop your mum off at an airport for 2 minutes is truly exasperating.

I'm choosing to understand why they haven't said anything rather than seeking things that in the circumstances may not be possible. You are assuming you are entitled to information when legally as far as I am aware (though by all means if I'm wrong point me to the legal rule that I've missed!) that isn't the case. They're not entitled to give out information about a person without their consent (and yes, that includes something as simple as "she's sick"). It isn't as simple as "just post it on your social media". And there have been cast boards and notices, which is probably all they have to do. If that is the case, then all the complaining in the world isn't going to make a difference. It may be bad PR, but it may be all they are able to do in the circumstances. We don't know who is making the decisions about what is and isn't said, but clearly it isn't making a huge amount of difference beyond this forum and a few tweets - I haven't seen any media articles about her absence, for one.

(Note to admins: it occurs to me that some of these discussions about policy, illness, etc. might be better on the Business Questions thread... and might allow this one to get back to discussing Cabaret. I was going to post this there, but it wouldn't make sense since it's referring to previous posts here.) The broader topic of absences has probably got enough legs for a thread all of its own so anyone, feel free! As far as this thread is concerned we are still discussing the show, specifically Jessie’s absence from it. if people are tired of that then it’s completely within their gift to change the direction of the discussion. Just post about something else and generate some interest in whatever it is they want to discuss. That’s how it works. What doesn’t work is telling people they shouldn’t be discussing something which is completely on topic, relevant, and of interest to those involved.

Love ‘within their gift’. One of my fave ‘phrases or sayings’. See also ‘throwing the baby out with the bathwater’. 😂

North Americans expect it, and would get their money back too. I'd imagine the French wouldn't put up with it (they're not getting the sky high fuel prices we're getting because they have a tendency to riot). Most media types probably saw Cabaret early in its run and have moved on to something else and we're not living in normal times right now news- wise (I'm dipping into this forum right now as a brief reassuring reminder of the 'old world' before everything went dystopian and a respite from doomscrolling).

I think they should put slips in the programmes really. It's nice for the audience members to have it (and accurate), and also a way of acknowledging whoever is on.

I wonder if they'll cover up his tattoos or go with them I see no reason to cover them up given the chosen interpretation of the club and its performers in this production - he won't be the only cast member sporting tattoos, and his would fit quite well into the overall aesthetic.

I’d forgotten about the microphone. Took me completely out of the show, and one of the directorial missteps for me. I realize it isn’t a period perfect production, but God, those modern wirless mics took me out of the world!

I have ticket for tomorrow matinee and I just can’t believe I tested positive yesterday! I have failed to get in touch with ATG tickets and I wondered if anyone had a contact number for them that’s good for returns. I usually wouldn’t worry and just write it off but it said on their site you could possibly get a credit and £90 is a significant amount. I don’t even feel unwell but of course wouldn’t dream of sitting in a theatre right now. Thank You Sorry to hear that. I bet ATG will snap your hand off for a return and it will be back on sale at £250 within minutes! ATG never got back to me though I completed their form. Luckily I was able to find someone to take it (I didn’t ask for anything). They said fantastic but JB was off which was a shame. I’m just glad to let didn’t go to waste.

Can’t see JB getting any more high profile musical runs going forward. Whatever the reason is, this puts her reliability severely under question. Maybe this is why she’s been concentrating on the straight acting for the last decade? If she wins the Olivier over Sutton Foster who was fabulous and also put in the hard yards x 10 with chocolate on, it will be a travesty. Jessie went back to Drama School after I'd Do Anything although she did do A Little Night Music in West End and then she cropped up in some concert "Best of Musical" type shows. Then suddenly she started playing dramatic roles on both stage and screen and has built up a very successful career there. I think Cabaret is her first lead musical role since A Little Night Music. Can anyone confirm?

I imagine they'll go with them tbh. Maybe cover up any that are too modern, but I think tattoos fit the style of the Kit Kat Club in this production.

🙋♂️ I remember a very uncomfortable coach journey from Weston to London for us to see MM when it was still at the NT. I told myself all the way there not to get too excited but still the disappointment of the elusive Martine was devastating…until Alex Jay hit the stage, then I forgot all about her. I really don’t get the fuss about MFL. It just isn’t my bag at all. By all accounts Martine was terrific, but sadly very few got to see her. Sorry you didn't enjoy it Dan, especially as it is one of my favourite productions. Ironically didn't Alex Jay do Cabaret at Chichester when she left MFL and then effectively left the business.

Whoever is running Jessie’s PR is getting things very very wrong. Dipping out of shows repeatedly with no explanation then filmed throwing her head back and laughing with luvvies at the BAFTAs is NOT a good look. Try to justify it all you want, try to close the discussion down all you want. It looks terrible. I agree it is likely a vocal issue as she has been doing some shows and is out and about. Surely it just needs the Producers to put out a statement "Jessie Buckley has a vocal issue which is accessed on a daily basis and as a consequence will miss today's show" or Jessie just puts out a tweet to this effect or TikTok/Insta message. If she is on vocal rest just hold up a sign saying this. No need to go into full details but it lets people know.

The lack of transparency regarding Buckley's absence has been appalling. A statement from the producers or from Buckley herself would have been the proper thing to do. There are lots of people who've booked because of the star names and the prices are extremely high because of those names

I see people are still obsessed with how other people spend their money and and are still being outraged on their behalf...its no wonder so many great posters have left in recent months.

This won't affect Jessie doing another musical. The only thing that will affect that is film and TV work. It will not stop her getting work. I'd wager almost no one (apart from a small number of people - most of whom I imagine on this board) are kicking up a fuss that she isn't there - so she'll do just fine.

I saw her as Sophie in Mamma Mia at one point. I don’t know where that fits into the timeline. Alex Jay did Cabaret in 2002 just after she left My Fair Lady, and then she joined Mamma Mia in 2003 replacing Laura Michelle Kelly who was about to take over as Eliza in MFL!
