Im mystified as to why so many think she’d be a good choice. It’s nearly 20 years since Chicago. Yes she was great in it but she’s done nothing of note since. She’s not box office, and I suspect that’s the reason why she’s selling coffee and her own line of homewares tat on QVC. I do wonder if since going public about her bipolar diagnosis, producers are reluctant to cast her.... I’d hate to think it had when she has proved herself in my eyes anyway. We should celebrate people who live with disabilities, I really feel people with mental health conditions have been left behind with the whole diversity thing.

Just throwing out another Norma option..... Christine Baranski. I'm watching her performance in Mame (from over 15 years ago, admittedly) but she screams 'star' and she can sing. I think she'd put a really interesting spin on it. Have you seen her A little priest on YouTube with Kelsey Grammer oh my god she’s brilliant. I’ll admit I can’t see her as Norma but it’s probably just aesthetically, like I don’t see Norma as fair or tall/skinny. That’s probably terrible to say but it’s the image in my head but am totally open. Just found it, thanks for the tip! She’s fab... not so much into Kelsey in that though

She is an incredible, versatile talent. The accent's a tad off but that timing (and vocal)!
Thank you for sharing.

Complete #ICON. God I wish her and ALW would make up and somehow somewhere she would sing Norma again. (Never gonna happen but I can dream....)

This movie will not be made. Do you have a source? Or is this just your opinion?

Its my opinion. But I did hear an interview with Glen Close on Wednesday and she never mentioned it. If you were getting ready to film something this summer I think she would have said something.

It won't be made as long as Paramount don't say yes. And they still haven't said yes. And with ALW's track record re stage-to-screen transitions, who can blame them?

I thought PP had green lit it a while ago. Reports in THR seem to indicate PP are lead producers of the project with Rob Ashford attached to direct.

Thank you, this is so interesting! That must have been printed before the two s*its hit the fan, LuPone's and Dunaway's. Here Patti is said to have "turned down the role", which is quite the euphemism. And they weren't wrong about Dunaway either, but we all know how that went. Also, I didn't know rumors about Chita were so strong. And wow, I wasn't even born and people were already bitching about colour-blind casting! It's interesting that Moreno is the only one here who would actually end up playing the role.

ALW said in January that PP still weren't persuaded to give the project the greenlight. That doesn't mean a team hasn't been proposed to make it...but I think it's stuck in 'development hell'. Which is not uncommon as the same thing happened to the films of Phantom, Evita, and Les Mis, among others. They'll need PP's $$$ to get this done properly as otherwise they won't be able to afford anything. That was part of the problem with the Phantom film - RUG did it alone with no studio backing because ALW got impatient that Warner Bros was taking so long to do anything, so he bought back the rights from them...which didn't leave money for major stars or a hot visionary director. I can understand PP's reluctance. The original film is a masterpiece and in film circles this would be considered a 'remake' of sorts which would never withstand comparisons to Billy Wilder's original. Everyone will compare this to the original if/when it gets made.

I joined after someone mentioned it upthread so thanks to that person! www.facebook.com/groups/599827720631298/?ref=share

Yes it's a brilliant film, but A) it was 70 years ago, I think enough time has passed for someone else to have a go, and B) this would be the first time it's been made as the musical. It's not a remake, it's an adaption (and yes I can hear Norma's line about comebacks and returns in my head as I type this!) 😀

I just had to see it again before it closed in London and i wasn't looking forward to seeing Petula after having seen Betty Buckley twice in the role....but I was pleasantly surprised with her performance, no where near the car crash I was expecting

It's not a remake, it's an adaption (and yes I can hear Norma's line about comebacks and returns in my head as I type this!) 😀 Paramount have nothing to lose at this point, especially when the expiry on copyright on the original is fast approaching. So one way or another Sunset will eventually be made with or without Paramount - so they might as well cash in on it now. The next few years should see a shakeup in Hollywood as copyrights expire and properties enter the public domain - Mickey Mouse enters the public domain in 2024 and major titles like Gone With The Wind will see both the novel and movie enter the public domain in the next 15 years too. Presumably this means we might see big named theatrical adaptations in the next decade or so, which could be exciting. The Wizard of Oz movie enters the public domain in 2034 so if it’s still running, Nessarose might finally be allowed to wear ruby slippers in Wicked. While it's true the copyright on the original will soon expire, I suspect it is very likely that (given they were co-producers of the original stage musical; it wasn't RUG going alone IIRC), Paramount also has a share in the film adaptation rights of the musical...and those won't expire any time soon. So I'd surprised if it can happen without Paramount agreeing.

As COVID restrictions ease up, Close is hopeful that she’ll finally be able to reprise her role as Norma Desmond in Paramount’s movie adaptation of the Broadway musical “Sunset Boulevard.” “We’re very very close,” she says. “We’re ready to go.” She says Andrew Lloyd Webber is still working on new music for the big screen version. “I feel passionate about it. I feel if I could just bring her home to the movies, I don’t give a sh*t what I do for the rest of my life. I’ll play grandmothers until I die.”

They just need to hurry up before this Norma is too old to handle that staircase any more and has to move into a nice bungalow in Palm Springs!
