sorry i disagree, glenn close doesnt, neither did elaine paige. melodramatic yes, edging on deranged at times but always with grounds in reality. never 2d camp cheesy caricature I didn't say camp and cheesy - that's just an interpretation. But, similar to what BurlyBear says, it's a melodramatic role, full stop. There were many moments in the Glenn Close production that many in the the audience of the ENO laughed at her behaviour (when really they weren't supposed to) I'm mainly referring to the ends of both acts.

He can only look better than the strange moobs I had to suffer at the Coliseum Xavier looked fine xwith his top off. He's an actor not a bodybuilder. What are you, the body police?

Have to agree with Burly. Michael looked good to me. Have met him a few times and he's a lovely guy too.

While we're on fat shaming, Craig Revel Horwood writes about this in his autobiography.
When he directed his version he specifically had Ben Goddard in mind for Joe, but he hadn't seen him for a while before phoning him up and asking him to come and read for it.
Anyway, when he turns up Craig says Ben was somewhat overweight and told him "you've got the part, if you get in shape - remember you open Act II in a bright red pair of speedos". I paraphrase but that was the gist.
He says that Ben went running every day, shed the pounds, got on the tanning beds and looked great in the speedos!

Ben Goddard didn't wear swimming trunks on any of the 4 occasions I saw that production.
He wore a casual suit I seem to remember, and wore dark shades for the start of the song.

I guess he didn't shed the pounds after all... can't find the book now but I'll locate the passage and transcribe when I can.

Perhaps a product of CRH's fevered imagination.

Anyone here hoping to see the show in Nottingham will be disappointed. I received an email saying show cancelled at the Theatre Royal. Got my refund. Apparently the tour is finishing early so some venues cancelled. Managed to get two good seats for matinee at The Curve next week. Been waiting to see this show for ages.

When was it due in Nottingham? Just wondering if any other stops have been cut.

This is worrying news. On the official tour website today Nottingham does not appear. The tour picks up in 2018 in Bristol on 9th January (without Danny Mac). The tour is scheduled to end on 5th May 2018 in Hull. However, there is a 3 week gap in the tour (most odd) between Plymouth ending on 17th March and Wimbledon commencing on 9th April.

I booked tickets for 5th June 2018 for Sunderland. No sign of it on the website now and no email. Not impressed!

In regards to Danny and the pool scene. So anyone expecting tight skimpy trunks or shorts will be disappointed. Pretty standard baggy swimming shorts that were pretty long and also high waisted. Unless that was just the way he wore them for that particular performance.

Maybe the mankini stitching is taking longer than expected.

Problem is, Ria doesn't have the recognition factor. She might be brilliant but the name isn't going to sell any tickets and Danny Mac ain't enough on his own.

Is that affecting sales... leading to the tour getting cut short? Well, we don't know do we. But ask anyone walking out of a theatre on a Saturday night if they know her name and I don't think you'd get a hugely positive response. Anyway, I was just chatting to centaured on messenger about this and we've recast Norma. And our decision would sell this tour out. You wont like it though....

I'd have thought the name of the show was strong enough to sell this production, especially with the recent attention c/o the ENO and Broadway productions. I think this kind of show should be able to sell irregardless of principal casting, its a shame if not, given the rest of the dirge that is doing the rounds.
