What on Earth is going on in this thread??? I've been clicking on it whenever I see it just to see if anybody else has taken the plunge and joined in. (I've never seen Bridgerton, or been on TikTok so I didn't think I had much to add!)

I'm just amazed they got as far as they did with borderline copyright infringement Iirc they were able to strike a deal with Netflix in order to be able to record the album. Yeah I believe they did but by that point they were already viral and in the public domain so had a lot of attention so it added pressure to Netflix to avoid a negative PR story by saying no. That's why i said borderline as it seems a grey area to me when tiktok was so public already with people consuming it. Its not like they wrote it privately then sought rights permission

Abigail Barlow explained everything in a tiktok in April last year https://www.tiktok.com/@abigailbarlowww/video/6949221304268639494 en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unofficial_Bridgerton_Musicalthe german article is more exact de.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Unofficial_Bridgerton_MusicalThe first tiktok was just for fun...Abigail Barlow had a career crises...after sucess with a pop song ...labels at first seemed to be interested...but she got ghosted in Nov/Dec 2020 by them ...so she searched for jobs...was very depressed.. ... there was never copyright infringement...they created there own music...btw. after a BBC only feature 10 days later !!! after the Netflix producers, the author, the whole cast posted exited reactions...even on TV... Emily Bear even at the age of 20 is a world class musician, very likely with the best lawyers, agents even before Bridgerton....Quincy Jones is her mentor since she was 9.... She got got a contract at the age of 16 with one of the worlds leading filmscoring agencies...look up the other clients... kraft-engel.com/clients/emily-bear/Since last year she is founding member of the Recording Avademy Songwriters/ Composers wing, next to Hans Zimmer etc. etc. www.recordingacademy.com/songwriters-composers-wingHere a ASCAP 2021 interview en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Bearde.wikipedia.org/wiki/Emily_Bear

Some posts have been removed. Could we direct comments at the show and not each other please. I have no problem with this.. but I did not start. . When BBC etc. posted features etc. last year...I only thought that such a thread would be interesting in a musical forum...perhaps members of this forum would be interested to watch, knowing all the facts.. There will be more Barlow & Bear musicals in the future...even as it seems a Broadway musical in the near future...but because of DNAs they are not allowed to tell anything... Emily Bear posted a photo with en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nia_Vardalos where they were creating something... If this was a hint...for a musical „My big fat greek wedding“ ? I don‘t know

btw. you are here... and as I was in recent years correct about Jacob Collier, Jon Batiste...it seems be very likely that these two young women will be EGOT winners in a few years Disagree. Think they are attention seekers. Being endorsed by ALW is not exactly career progressing. This board's lack of interest is probably a good gauge of where things are heading with these two. I trust the judgement of folk on here over a well-oiled highly expensed PR machine. Keep pumping the pap. They'd be mad to have been doing it all without some form of agreement in place for Netflix to at least look the other way, but I guess they took it too far?

Yes I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner. It’s one thing to have a parody and a likeness but this definitely seems to be getting way bigger than was probably ever originally intended. Curious to see what happens.

Yeah, as I said previously it's such a borderline case of breaking copyright. Even more bizarrely its been supported and awarded by the entertainment industry
I thought this thread was basically a spam thread, nice to see another viewpoint lol

It’s one thing to make some songs to share on TikTok for fun. It’s another to then sell an album and perform sell out concerts. They took it too far.

I was very confused about this. My knowledge of, and interest in, tv costume dramas being very limited I thought this was based on Jane Austen, therefore out of copyright. Of course, I was confusing it with Sanditon. All these people in bonnets look the same to me...
I think this whole thing is very smart. The point is, they've already made a success and names for themselves. They've got the public's attention - the single hardest thing for any creative to get in this crowded world. It doesn't really matter what happens now from a legal pov - all publicity is good publicity.

Barlow & Bear is a great-sounding composer/lyricist duo, it's the alliteration I think.
It will be interesting to see what happens with this — they've licensed it to Secret Cinema so aren't against things that they think will make money!
I'm very surprised the RAH booked it without checking it was fine. It's one thing doing a parody/unofficial musical at the Edinburgh festival or something, but full scale concert halls are a bit different!

I was very confused about this. My knowledge of, and interest in, tv costume dramas being very limited I thought this was based on Jane Austen, therefore out of copyright. Yeah had they written a Jane Austen musical, they would have been fine. No one can sue Pride and Prejudice* (*sort of) because no one owns Pride and Prejudice anymore. I've seen lots of people on other platforms claiming this is just Netflix being greedy, because these two girls have created something impressive (supposedly - I've never listened to it), but they still purposefully capitalised off an already popular IP. Had they written a P&P musical, it wouldn't have gotten anywhere. There are writers (both for the TV show and the original books) out there whose work is being plagiarised for what is now potentially huge financial gain and that's not cool. Passion projects by fans are one thing, albums you submit for Grammy awards and live shows you sell many expensive tickets for are another.

But this is not any different to the Unofficial Harry Potter musical that was toured back in the day.
It is commercialised fanfic. And I don't think there is enough case law to be certain where the courts might draw the line between tribute and copyright infringement.
And isn't it now a little late for Netflix to be getting lawyered up? The pair have already won the Grammy for the album. If they were that concerned, they should have sued then or even earlier in the process.
A few concert performances of the score is not going to harm the ratings for the TV show. But a messy court case very much will.

You can't commercialise fanwork, officially. That's the legal line. If some people got away with it for some IP, they either had some agreement or got lucky, but in theory they could have had the rug pulled out from under them at any point.
I presume Netflix either have plans for some musical adaptation that they worry will be put into competition with this one, or they worry the tour will affect sales to other in person Bridgerton events along the lines of the Secret Cinema nights. It's all fun and games until you threaten their profits, I guess.
