Stephanie J Block wasnt known for being a dancer and by all accounts she was great in the role. Kerry would have danced during her 3 years training at Laine, so she can definitely do it, it just hasnt been the focus of what she's been seen in.
Bonnie is definitely not in a role that utilises all of her talents.

I saw SJB in Anything Goes when it was on Broadway and she was great, I do think we've been spoiled by having Sutton Foster as Reno before who is a real triple threat so it would make anyone else look mediocre.

Kerry did do a bit of dancing during Jellicle Songs for Jellicle Cats when she was Grizabella.

She won’t be able to do that and constantly tuck her hair behind her ear!

It's not that Kerry can't do it, she probably can, but to have Bonnie standing literally next to her who is just such an obvious all-round Reno.... it's just bizarre.

I'm going to guess it's an age thing - if she were ten years younger I think they'd have offered it to her. I'd happily watch her do it at this age, but from a producer's point of view they probably want someone in a slightly younger age bracket.

I get that, but the age thing does lose its argument when Megan Mullally was going to lead the Barbican production at 62 years old, Bonnie is only 57 (and doesn't even look that, to be fair). Reno totally works as an older character.

Reno totally works as an older character. Yes, and I said that myself earlier in this very thread, but Mullally has more star power on an international scale, they'd age the character up for her.

Actually to be fair to Kerry she can do comedy, that whole “throw them at the girls in the front row” pins moment at Wicked was a scream!

Simon Callow did The Woman in White 17 years ago, I don’t think I’ve seen him on stage since. He was in that hopeless RSC musical version of Merry Wives too around that time. I think he’ll be fine in this. I didn’t see that one. just remembered I saw him to his one man show on Dickens at the Playhouse I think, all I remember of that he had a button in his hand, that let off a fancy pyrotechnic.

And Bonnie Langford has way more name recognition to the Anything Goes audience demographic than Kerry Ellis does. No one outside of the Musical Theatre world knows who Kerry is, Bonnie is much more of a household name having been working in the entertainment industry over 45 years.

Exactly. Bonnie has been on tv for 50 years. Kerry has been on tv for 3 minutes when she did that audition for The Voice 🥺

Well, this was a surprise. I also read Kerry’s book over Christmas and she often talked about her dance background and never being afraid of a physical challenge. We also regularly see her working out on her social media so I don’t really have any doubts as to whether or not she’ll be able to dance this let alone sing this. It’ll be great to see her leading a musical again for sure and hopefully audiences will warm to her as much as they did for Sutton last summer.

This isn't doing steps in an ensemble at Laine, it's being front and centre carrying two of the most challenging "song and dance" sequences in the history of musical theatre. We can't be fooled by how easy the likes of Sutton Foster make it look. It's not. The stars make it look that way. I think perhaps sometimes people don't appreciate the difference between a "safe turn" and a true lead - and I include producers in that. As I said though, I'll be seeing it anyway and I like Kerry Ellis - but this seems very dodgy casting. You've got Bonnie Langford right there in the cast who is one of our best (and only) true triple threat "names".

I think both that and the cinema release was a huge mistake if they knew they were going to bring it back to the Barbican and tour it as well. If they didn’t know, then I’d have ditched the idea given that it’s now been widely seen. I’m only going to see it in Manchester because the theatre is literally round the corner, I do think I’ve had my fill of it and I’m afraid Kerry Ellis is not a draw for me. It shows a lack of imagination on the Barbican’s part aswell I think. They’ve had a smash hit with a brilliant revival of a classic show. Bums have been on seats. That audience who loved it so much are now ripe for being tempted to see another fabulous traditional musical done in a big scale at the Barbican but what they’re being offered is the same show again. AND they probably watched it on telly at Christmas aswell. I can’t see it selling very well, and any financial benefits of putting the same show in again are lost if nobody goes to see it. It will be discounted to death.

Wasn't Evita from Regent's Park supposed to transfer in but cancelled due to covid?
Think that would have been better than Anything Goes once the tv and cinema views had taken away a number of theatre goers.

I think the problem is with the show itself, rather than specifically that people have already seen it on TV. Miss Saigon toured well after it did a few years in London and had played in cinemas across the world (granted it wasn't on BBC over Christmas, but was commercially available on DVD). And I'm sure Hamilton on Disney+ hasn't damaged sales of the theatre productions around the world.
However, I see Anything Goes as having more of a niche market, and the Barbican did well last summer in making it an 'event'. Several factors came together to make it a very popular ticket, with great word-of-mouth, for a limited season. But I don't think that can be replicated on tour (or another season at the Barbican) with a show that has limited interest, and without the same casting appeal. And yes, add into the mix that people who were maybe on the fence about seeing this have already seen it on TV, it's going to be a difficult sell.

Yes have to agree with this. Seeing it on tv did it no favours in my view. Rarely do musicals come across on tv as well as in person. Although its some years since seeing Anything Goes , seeing the film of it would not want to make me go back.
