I agree with you Danb, some of the more well known songs especially in the first half were over in a flash and i thought more would have been made of them
I still thoroughly enjoyed the show

Yeah I'd say you'd struggle to find a 30s musical comedy that has any kind of real emotional heart to it. I mean just look at how many Cole Porter songs from other shows have been interpolated into the score now, that's pretty much the case with every musical of that era because they're so interchangeable. It's all romantic comedies with no real depth and no real plot-relevant songs (or at least not ones that aren't so generic that they could easily be plucked out and put into something else). The only musical I can think of from that era that had any sort of heft was Show Boat but that was the first of its kind. 42nd Street is similar in that regards, most of the songs from that show are from other Warner Bros movie musicals of that era, likewise Singin in the Rain, Whilst a lot of Thirties musicals were about giving a space to digest your dinner, have a laugh and listen to the tunes you were going to dance to at a club later that night, it wasn't all froth. It's also the decade of Porgy and Bess, Knickerbocker Holiday, Of Thee I Sing and Cradle Will Rock - maybe not all emotionally satisfying, but certainly trying for something "more serious in intent". But, then, I also find a good production of The Boys From Syracuse emotionally satisfying, if it's done well.

Jack Wilcox made his Billy debut last night. I was watching again last night and was lucky enough to see him- he was really terrific. Dare I say an improvement on Samuel Edwards (who never did it for me as Billy). Lovely voice and an easy charm. Bravo

Well, I got Rush for Row R for the matinee right at 10am. Payment very slow but was taken from my card. Then an error message…

Looks like my payment has now been refunded so the curse of TodayTix strikes again.

I do wonder if it's an error from the Barbican side because it's the only show I've had issues with for rush (in terms of having tickets in basket and then not being able to get them).

Slightly off topic but for those of you who like the music of Cole Porter can I recommend the new album by Tony Bennett and Lady Gaga. Some great songs beautifully sung.

Slightly OT, but I do love the general evolution of threads on this board when a top quality production comes through London. We always get the absolute raves from those who manage to get in early, "best show ever", "brilliant casting" etc. Then invariably come the folk who catch it later and post "I don't know but it just kinda left me cold", "I wasn't entirely sold on the casting"....I think it says a lot about us all. Not really a criticism, just an observation. Look at this thread for some cracking examples!
Thanks for your time.

No other board members at the last performance with Dame Sutton Foster surprised to see this not at the top of the board. First time seeing this production nd she definitely is a powerhouse and there did seem genuine support for her from the rest of the cast. Flowers for her at the final bows and several ad libs from Robert Lindsay throughout the show
She has to pack and catch a plan This cruise has been a blast Both said online in friendship routine
Have you packed your clothes yet in the finale
Lots of solid performances and the ensemble were playing as if it was a first night. Anything goes and Gabriel got the standing ovations but have to say the dance numbers did look a bit cramped on the stage. Have to admit that the sheer unstoppable joy I remember the national version at Drury lane being was not topped and at times this version did seem to run uneven and flat but look forward to seeing it on the cinema for a second look.

Or the cast start flagging a few months in, lose the sparkle, things get changed for the smooth running of the show etc. How you feel about a show after the 1st time will never be replicated again so it stands to reason.

Well I won rush today, the payment paused for about 30 seconds as usual, but then actually managed to complete. I can see a ticket in my account!
So I shall be there in Stalls Row R tonight to see Rachel York.

I'd love to hear thoughts on Rachels performance, I'm intrigued to see someone else do the role and wondering if its worth another visit

I definitely want to see her but I can't decide if it's better to go early in her run or wait for her to settle in a little.
