In my case the silence is because I want to know what people who are affected by this think and what they want me to do. It is not for me to prejudge that and give an opinion where frankly I don't think my opinion matters or is warranted. It is not for me to say people should or shouldn't be affected by or "cancelled" for something like this. Please tell allies what you would prefer us to do so we know how to react in a way that will help move things forward in the right way, not cause the circular debate that this thread seems to have become. I'm not asking to be spoon fed, just conscious that a white person jumping in can inadvertently make things worse, so I'd rather take direction from those whose views on this actually matter. Just to clarify, I meant the silence from Sutton was a bit disappointing. As to what allies should do (and I mean allies for anything, not just allies to the black community), I think listen to what affected people are saying. But listen to more than one person or try and find out more from other sources, because as I said, this is my opinion on the matter, I don't speak for all black people and there will be black people who's view on this (or other matters) I will completely disagree with just as not all gay people or all British people have the same opinion. And whilst there are always grades of racism and all 'isms', if a fair amount of people from the community affected tell you that it is offensive or discriminatory, intent or no intent by the person doing it, then listen to them. It might not be a huge issue for you or you might not even be able to fully get your head around the issue, but listen and be supportive. At the same time, keep things in perspective, i.e. support and speak out but also don’t go overzealous and shout people down or cancel them for minor mistakes or errors in judgement, especially when those people are willing to learn, because that will just divide people. A friend of mine was very much trying to be good ally and ready to tear up their ticket to first preview of Anything Goes and whilst I appreciated that their intentions were good, I didn’t think that that was the answer in this case. So that is my idea of a good ally, listen, learn and support, which is what I try to live by being an ally to other communities. But again other people might see that completely differently. 😊

Whilst I rarely spend beyond £100, for Sutton Foster in a limited season with cast including Felicity Kendal and Robert Lindsay after the year we’ve had, I went for a £150 ticket personally. And yeah, it the producers need to recoup after everything, I don’t think it’s too awful and a way for us to give back to an industry we love. Remember, pre-pandemic Hamilton tickets went up to £250 too

I got in early for my BB1 seat at £20. Would not pay £150 for this show (or any show). If people are brave, they'll wait for dynamic pricing to take effect in most cases, though in the real hit shows this rarely happens and then people have FOMO. Theatre must always remain accessible to everybody across the affordability spectrum.

I'd pay £150 if you brought Judy Garland back from the dead

Regardless of the covid situation, people buying £150 tickets are supporting bad business practice
Other producers will cop on (if sales are good), and raise their prices too.
Act with your wallet!

I agree I think that pushing prices beyond reach is bad business practice but in the end people do buy them. Btw, I only ever pay beyond £100 IF it’s a show I really want to see and for a particular seat I really want too.
I do think there should be more concession options in commercial theatre. I was hoping for this, Young Barbican members would be able to get some discount on some performances like they did with JCS but sadly not. Student/Under 25/Unwaged schemes are always welcome and do have an impact on an audiences demographic from experience.

It's extraordinary the prices theatres are charging for tickets as they start to reopen. Research from the Audience Agency has indicated that less than a third of members of the public at the moment would be happy to attend a live event. You would think they would make prices more reasonable to attract people back to the theatre not to charge more to make up for the lost revenue over the last 18 months. It is called show business for a reason and you can't expect producers to set prices at rock bottom with no chance of recouping.

After a year of no theatre, they could take all my money quite frankly.
Yes I balked at the prices, but I love this show and I gladly paid the money.
There ARE cheaper prices available , and the good thing about the Barbican is that there aren’t really any bad seats.
Plus if they haven’t sold enough of the top price seats- there will start to be offers appearing on those seats soon enough.

Just seen this is going to be on the One Show tonight. Robert Lindsay and Felicity Kendal are being interviewed and, more importantly, there’ll be a performance from Sutton Foster and a bunch of sailor-suited dancers.

That was good. I do love a bit of tap. But, is it just me or does anyone else think that Sutton Foster looked like Tracy Mcdonald ne Barlow?

Anyone know what boat they were on ? I'm pretty sure it's the one moored next to Excel in Docklands as I recognised the surrounding area. Its called the Sunborn Yacht Hotel.

Up on YouTube if anyone missed it. Sutton still sounds amazing, can’t wait for opening night to come. I sat at home filming it on my my camera. Should have realised there would be a version on "that" site.

Kendal and Lindsay looked and must have felt somewhat spare. kendal's character in the show is pretty non-existent, isn't it.
