The link text is a nutshell summary!
But to expand a bit -
1. The rumour going around comes from an unsourced Star Trek-related website and is very unlikely to true.
2. Hardy is too old - by the time his first Bond film would be made and released he’d already be around 48, most Bonds retire in their early 50s (Daniel Craig is playing Bond as old and craggy at 52).
3. It’d be silly to ‘reboot’ the franchise with an old, rugged, Bond when we just had an old, rugged, Bond. Eon are more like to skew lighter/more fantastical in tone, and younger.
4. Tom Hardy is too famous already. Bond is usually a name-making role, not given to an established movie star.
5. Chinese box office will be a big factor in the casting - unlikely that we’ll get a black actor cast because of Chinese audiences.

Needs an unknown, or you know what passes for an unknown, that is a 40 year old who has done twenty years of solid work in theatre, small movies etc, but not yet a Hollywood name. And if we can’t have a black actor cos of what said above, then what about a female ( I choose my words carefully, female to be interpreted ) red head. Just saying.

I think the producers have already ruled out a female Bond.
Robbie Collins' pick is Henry Golding - which I think is a good shout. He does suave very well.

So a white Bond sells to the Chinese market but not a black Bond? Whilst appreciating this is a question that no one could emphatically answer here why is this? Unrelatable? My knowledge of china is pretty poor, a predominantly non black population? would an Asian bond sell?

Apparently the belief (and I stress belief because I don’t know how true it is) is that Chinese audiences don’t like watching black and brown actors in films and won’t see films with them as leads.
See the recent kerfuffle with John Boyega’s advert for Jo Malone being reshot with an Asian actor for the local Chinese market. He was also shrunk on the Chinese version of the Star Wars posters to make him less prominent.
Not sure if there is actual science behind this or if it’s just received wisdom, but Chinese box office is really important to big expensive franchises like Bond, so it has an effect.

I suppose if it's just 'perceived wisdom' nobody is prepared to gamble and test it out. That's a hell of a stumbling block to better diversity in films on the belief, real or otherwise, that certain actors won't sell.
