Well they can only deal with the actual sound levels once everyone is in the space. Clearly they didn’t have enough time. This is the reason I will never see a musical concert like this again. Chess at the Albert Hall was a hot mess and it was utterly ruined by the sound. And you pay a fortune for it. It’s absolutely unacceptable. We need our resident expert firefingers to comment! Difficult to say without being there and having never been in the Ally Pally theatre. Often what people think is a "great acoustic" actually just creates a mess of reverb with sounding bouncing everywhere and every instrument bleeding into every mic, the Albert Hall added the acoustic baffles to the roof (the mushroom looking things) but it can still be a bit of a nightmare. A 28 piece orchestra was probably flooding the vocal mics out, and given the venues age decent speaker rigging points for good coverage were probably few and far between. Sound is never good the first time, people in a space changes the acoustic properties, and adrenaline makes every performer behave differently to the tech and dress runs. Pretty much most threads over in the musicals board has people saying "sound needs work" when in early previews. Just a shame when preview one is also the penultimate performance.

Yes firefingers: There was definitely a 'mess of reverb' this afternoon. I think the bare brick walls won't have helped, and it is a barn of a venue - with 2000 fewer seats than original configuration - and then only about 450 tickets sold due to social distancing out of current capacity of 916. I'm sure a lot of the sound issues would have been improved if this hadn't been a 2 performance 'run'. Having said that, I could hear all the lyrics - from the circle, and I've been to a lot worse - cf Chess at the Albert Hall - the worst ever.

How much time do they need? This has been on the cards for months. Well they can only deal with the actual sound levels once everyone is in the space. Clearly they didn’t have enough time. I've found the musicals Proms at the RAH have sounded far better when watching them back on TV afterwards than live in the RAH, so presumably similarly they're miking for TV rather than for the live audience.

Definitely. The only time you get a decent sound at the RAH is when it isn't being recorded for other purposes.

Not the sound issues which I can see might be very hard to predict and overcome but the orchestra being out of sync? female lead not knowing lines? Characters not in costume? How long have they had to get a costume together? Sounds like it was absolutely thrown together which, if true, is a disgrace.

Definitely. The only time you get a decent sound at the RAH is when it isn't being recorded for other purposes. It's fine when Proms are using mikes for recording purposes only & the sound you hear in the hall is acoustic! I agree it's the case when amplified concerts are being considered though.

I did find it odd that Shenton praised Karimloo on Twitter as 'incredible' simply being for off-book. It's really not that hard to learn lyrics to a well-known musical like this...especially when this has been planned for some time.

Transferring to the RAH for one night only. I see Alex Parker has taken lessons from the RUG/CML school of press statements...

It was expensive at the Alexandra Palace, people are gonna need to remortgage for this!! It'll sound amazing but I won't get my hopes up to be able to afford it.

I might have swore a little. It's great that shows are returning but not sure my bank balance can cope. Would really like to see this but have just booked for Taboo as well.

Jesus, those prices. If they had a bike I'd be telling them to get on it. Agreed totally. It was great at Alexandra Palace but it was a simple staging on wooden chairs. I doubt we are suddenly going to get the spectacle of the Phantom Anniversary concert right. It does seem steep but it wont sell out as the last one didnt for either performance. Its a shame as both Ramin and Maz give brilliant performances

The RAH don't really do deals either do they.... it's a shame. It will sound incredible so those lucky enough to go will have a wonderful time.

Jesus above. I’d pay those prices to see Glenn or Patti in a one night only performance at the RAH but not for this.

I saw Glenn Close from a good seat for...£40.
What a shocker of a price range.

Yeah they’re not gonna sell 6,000 tickets at those prices when this is a repeat of something that’s already been done… The prices were almost understandable last time around because of the half capacity but this just seems like pure greed (and more delusion than Norma herself if they think many people are gonna pay that).

The RAH don't really do deals either do they.... Individual promoters do deals (for shows that just happen to be hosted at the RAH). They aren't always widely available though. At those prices I will wait, especially as I already saw this at the Palace.
