Just out of the matinee and I absolutely loved this. Thought Robert Tripolino was great as Jesus, and I had goosebumps during Gethsemane. Ricardo Afonso was incredible got a standing ovation for Superstar (which was astonishingly brilliant) - I have no idea how he can do that twice today. Matt Cardle is quickly becoming a very strong musical theatre actor - a role which is the complete opposite of his previous 2 roles. He also found a rocky tone to his voice which I've not heard from him before. I know much has been said about Sallay Garnett and she splits opinions - I really liked her voice and thought her version of I Don't Know How To Love Him was really strong. Also loved Cavin Cornwall and Nathan Amzi - both astonishingly good voices (in very different ways!).

Not sure what the deal is for OAT and the Barbican, but I love the theatre from early RSC days and the steel safety curtain still has a wow factor after all these years, particularly when the jaws open for the second half trials and tribulations.

You enthusiasts have persuaded me: I've booked a fiendishly expensive (in my terms, as 3 times my average spend) ticket for next week AND for an evening, which at 7.45 pm is a dangerously late start for me. So as long as I can stay awake and it's a better production than the touring version I saw at the New Wimbledon a few years ago, it should be worth it.

This was one of the few shows that lived up to the hype! I thought it was fantastic in every way. Ricardo Afonso sings his face off and is very easy on the eye, in fact, the whole cast were great. Sallay Garnett had an unusual voice but it didn't bother me like some others on here. I also really enjoyed the choreograpahy. Usually i think that much movement is distracting, but for some reason it worked for this. My favourite part was the way they did the 40 lashes. So visual. And the falling gold confetti from the sky was gorgeous!
The one part that i didnt quite get was the concept of why they were musicians/using hand held mikes with wires. Apart from that, it's a show thats not to be missed. I'm hoping to go again before the end of the run.

So I wasn't sure re the hand held mikes/wires. Has been said on here is a nod to the original album and it being a concept ahead of being staged - though I don't really get that as this is clearly fully staged. Also been said is like the original film where it is a group of actors arriving to play these roles then leaving again - so making it clear they are actors not the actual characters.....

The set, lighting and effects such as those you mention look gorgeous. Been thinking, and is also a very sexy production I think. I've thought about this before but thought would sound shallow to say it, but then, if we are honest everyone enjoys eye candy on stage. Jesus is hot. Judas is hot. Pilate is hot. Mary is probably hot (straight lads/gay girls can advise no doubt). The entire ensemble look as though they have been dressed in the latest All Saints threads and most of the guys have got incredible bodies with biceps and triceps on full display. CLEARLY this is not the reason this is such a great JCS. But I would be lying if I said it didn't add to the experience. A smoking hot cast in a stunning set and lighting design - what's not to love!

Ngghhh... I've been trying to decide which show to go to for my birthday and it was narrowed down to this (which closes the weekend before my birthday) or Evita (which I can go to on my actual birthday). I plumped for the latter, but reading this thread I think I'm going to have to plead for another trip to London to see JCS before it closes!

Sorry Kylie. LOL. I live in Brighton so am going (although not to the Preston Park event so will miss Kylie). You deffo made the right decision. Trains to and from here will be hell as will the crowds in the park. JCS deffo worthy of a place on the repeat visits list!

Well this is just a bit bloody brilliant, isn't it? So many spine-tingling moments and I'm awe struck at the talent on display. Truly haunting (the laughing at the crucifixion was especially effective) and it managed to squeeze a tear out of me which is no small feat for a fiercely non-religious person such as myself. Really incredible and I'm so glad I could finally catch this as I wanted to at the Open Air but missed it.

So glad I decided to see this at the Barbican after having thrilled to it at Regent's Park. The direction is even better and I think a few things I had problems with in the first outing have now been changed. So glad this is getting to go Stateside. This is the version Broadway needed back in 2012, rather than Des McAnuff's, which only went because ALW was pushing for it. I don't think we'll ever get a definitive production of this show, but this comes pretty damn close.
I did wonder, on second viewing, whether Herod's costume is inspired by the original 'chrysalis' costume worn by Jesus in the original Broadway production...

Well this is even better than it was at the park. This cast take it to another level, and the direction has become even sharper. Insane vocals, best in London by a long shot. And a definitive production.

I get why people love the atmosphere in the park, but this has been taken to another level indoors with the intensity and the creative act 1 lighting design that wasn't do-able in the park's daylight. Know am a broken record re this, but I am SO hoping for a cast recording and UK tour. (99.9% confident neither will happen sadly.....) God, thinking about it, a DVD (like the old Cats/Joseph/JCS staged ones) would be even more amazing. This should be preserved! Again though, no chance. I shall keep dreaming.....

Oh a cast recording would be great! Maybe with a different Mary though. Longing for a well produced, up-to-date recording of JCS. The 1996 sounds like it was recorded in a toilet, Don't like Murray Head or Jerome Pradon as Judas in either the 70s or 2000s recordings and then last year's NBC recording is ruined by the crowd noise. Given this productions success in London & the US and getting rights for a release can't be that hard given the amount on Spotify, can't see any real reason why they couldn't do one for this... well other than the moderate ticket sales. Elliot & Harper gave us a Company recording, no reason OAT can't get this sorted, please!

While I would also love a recording of this JCS production, I think it's not really comparable to Company - that one was a ground-breaking new interpretation in which roles were gender-reversed for the first time and lines changed, so it made a lot of sense to capture this bold experiment. This JCS, while sounding great, is still a "normal" JCS at the end of the day.

I just realized that this is now the second production of Jesus Christ Superstar I've seen where an actor that was in the 2000 film in a role other than Caiaphas played Caiaphas (the first was the 2012 Arena tour).

I didn't justify my case well enough but was more comparing OAT and E&H as production forces with the ability and provision to make a recording happen, given Regent's Park have (technically) been producing since 1932 and Company was Elliot & Harper's 4th production.

So I wanted to see this again with a few friends and all the student tickets (half price for every Wednesday) are sold out, even though the show has loads of empty seats. I am FURIOUS. Don't really understand this at all. Do you think we have a good chance of getting upgraded if we book the balcony seats for a midweek performance that isn't selling really well?

I’m completely prepared to pay full price and get a train from Manc to London to see a matinee but looking at the seat opinions on @theatremonkey I’m not sure I can deal with the stress as it looks like this theatre only wants patrons under 5’10. I’m not investing that amount of money and effort to sit for 2.5 hours with my knees under my chin. Screw that 🖕🏻

The Stalls seats are wide, have amazing leg room, and i'm 6'1. and also, the show runs under 2 hours including interval.

I have gotten student tickets for sold out shows at the Barbican (the Grief is the thing with feathers is one example, which was completely sold out, but all the return tickets that were added on the website for Wednesdays had the student option). If the student tickets were limited for this production it should've been specified (something like 'subject to availability' wouldn't hurt). The Young Vic makes it perfectly clear on their website that tickets for Under 25s have to be booked in advance and are limited. Thanks for your input though, it was very useful as always!
