What’s the buzz?!
Errrr, well it’s somewhat minimal at the moment.
Seriously the marketing team need to get their act together with this. They’ve got a fantastic product (IMHO by far the best version of JCS I’ve ever seen) so the issue will be raising awareness.
With Joseph pulling them in at the Palladium and Evita selling to a loyal open air fan base, this will be a tougher sell.
Confess the Barbican isn’t massively on my radar. Only other time I’ve been was for the final performance of the Les Mis 25th. What’s the general clientele there? Is it like the National where there’s an army of loyal members? Also do they do much in the way of mainstream commercial musicals? I never really hear of any.....

I’m wavering but it’s definitely something I’d consider on a day I was already seeing something. So for me it was just a version where everything came together. Despite being a massive ALW nut, over the years JCS has been one of my least favourite of his shows, always struggled to connect with it. This version was just incredibly professional with great production values (a bonus in a show that has been done to death by Kenwright and amateur productions) but think visually it was just epic. Modern dress, (they all looked like they were wearing the All Saints Summer collection) and insane contemporary choreography by Drew McOnie - surely one of the best UK choreographers. All framed by (but not overwhelmed by) a simple but very effective set. And it was all very theatrical as dusk set in. How it will translate to a non open air location we shall see.

Saw the tour but gutted to never have seen the Lyceum John Napier designed version. The recording for me is ever so slightly more musical theatre rock (which I love) rather than rock rock (many JCS fans I guess would see this as a negative....)

Cardle as Pilate? That’ll be interesting. Glad to see Cornwall back, and I assume Amzi is cast as Annas which seems like a good fit to me. The others I’ve never heard of. Which is probably a good thing tbh. Intriguing that they’ve gone for a very different look this time - the guy playing Judas has more of a Declan Bennett look about him, and the guy playing Jesus appears much younger and softer. I wonder if that’s deliberate or just how the casting process turned out?

Not sure if Sallay Garnet/ Loah (Mary Magdalene) has much of a profile in the UK but she’s incredible and will be great in the role.

Trying to save money at the moment 😅 The side seats are normally fine - they are at a slight angle to the stage but it's not really a side view, if that makes sense. As @theatremonkey says better from about row H back, and if you go for the furthest in side seats (ie next to the top price seats), you will be fine. There are a few photos from those seats on seatplan Also - it really isn't selling that well so you could hang on - the Barbican often offer discounts or dynamically price. Or you could book a cheap seat and then exchange it nearer the time.

Was wondering when to post this, and now seems like a good time. Great insight into the production indoors in Chicago in general but 2minutes in there's a good birds-eye view from higher up on the set showing stalls and some of the set that could be obstructive.

And pretty happy with this cast too - would it be shallow to say they look like a pretty hot bunch?!
Interesting that they had trees as part of the set in Chicago to recreate that outdoor feeling indoors!

I loved that video! I have booked a cheap ticket to see this the afternoon before I see Evita. I loved seeing it at the Outdoor theatre (in its second run)

Great to see Ricardo Afonso playing Judas - as he was originally scheduled to play the part at Regent's Park but had to pull out prior to rehearsals starting. This led to Tyrone Huntley, who had been cast as one of the priests, taking over the role. Ricardo Afonso has a remarkable voice and will set the Barbican alight - it's fantastic to have him back on stage.
