Faced with the many years’ worth of Recordings the BBC seem to have made a good selection for the two week rewind. Better than nothing for sure.

As a big tennis fan I'm disappointed that Wimbledon has (understandably) been cancelled this year so I'm glad there's still coverage being shown on the BBC. Really enjoyed the replay of the classic 2008 Nadal v Federer match this afternoon - how dark when it finished! Looking ahead at my TV guide there seems to be a decent variation in the years that they have chosen.
The Battle of the Brits tournament organised by Jamie Murray that was shown on Amazon Prime last week was excellent. Great to see the camaraderie and competitiveness between the players. Really interesting to have the mics and the chats with the players or coaches during the matches. Hope this tournament can become a regular event on the calendar.

Really enjoyed the replay of the classic 2008 Nadal v Federer match this afternoon The best ever? My Mum complained about my spoiler 5 mins before the end - I just assumed she remembered!

As a big Nadal fan I'd say this is definitely up there as one of the best matches ever Can't believe it was 12 years ago and yet I remember those final few points so well.

I also enjoyed the Battle of the Brits and it was lovely to see Andy Murray back in action. Have been watching Sue Barker presenting her evening show from Wimbledon and it looks so weird with no matches being played as they panned around the courts. Looking forward to some classic old matches being shown.

Got to be the greatest match ever, if we are excluding my epic six week match against Gary Avenue in the school holidays 1981.

I didn't realise Sue Barker was live last night, so instead of watching her, I watched Sunday afternoon's review of the 2019 Championships. I will happily watch any tennis, in any setting, even the local park, but what I find especially wonderful about Wimbledon is the way it very modestly showcases British excellence. Should I ever find myself in possession of a large fortune, a Centre Court debenture will be near the top of my shopping list! 💷 🎾 Anyway, I've been wondering, lynette, which is your favourite Fred Perry final - 1934, 35 or 36? 🤣

Cheeky.
I was watching from the 60s, the first colour tv, on which as a mere toddler of course, I saw the famous ‘you cannot be serious’ match and many other classics. I’m looking forward to seeing the Becker match when he came to everyone’s attention. I said at the time and repeated ad nauseam, that he would have only been taken off the court dead or the winner. This afternoon i enjoyed the different attitude to the naming of the players- Miss Evert and Miss Navatrilova (spelling?) and then Venus and Lindsey.

Watched the Evert and Navratilova final from 1978 today. Christ the commentator was calling Martina 'girl,' I mean the sexism. Plus I wouldn't dare call her such a derogatory word as 'girl.' Lovely to find out that her parents were allowed to come to the Wimbledom final in 79 because The Duchess of Kent intervened. She was a brilliant patron at Wimbledon. Shame she stopped.
Hope the show a Steffi Graf match. I adored her as a kid. To me she was the bees knees. I think I wanted to be her. Learning about her life as a grown up now makes me feel sorry for her. Glad she found happiness now. Evert and Martina still hate her though. I guess because she has never used her platform for women or women in sport or whatever. But she wanted out and has a right to dictate her own life and apparently runs a children's charity in Africa.

Wonder if they will go back as far as Pancho Gonzales vs Charlie Pasarell in 1969. Decent colour footage of that is available.
Apparently Wimbledon have rock solid pandemic insurance so could cancel quite easily without a major financial hit. Other Grand Slams I don't think are in such a strong position.

I recently finished reading a very enjoyable book about Wimbledon called Standing in Line by Ben Chatfield, about his 30 years of standing in The Queue. It’s quite light hearted and really shows just how much people love Wimbledon. Highly recommended!

I stand by both of the style choices I have made over the years, but I wonder if Roger Federer now regrets his 2001 surfer look, with the pony tail and bead necklace? Last time I checked, Switzerland was landlocked! Maybe he grew up watching Point Break on video?

Feel very fogeyish saying this, but isn't it lovely seeing old matches where the contestants don't scream like foxes f-ing.

Tie breaks are generally because it's hard to break serve and the men's game is less serve dominated now than it was in the 1990's.

And the crowd doesn’t shout out daft stuff being clever clever and the line judges sit down like they are at afternoon tea.

I've really enjoyed the coverage this fortnight. There's been a good mix of players/matches during the afternoon replays and the evening show with Sue Barker has been great, well done BBC

Anyone else watch the Virginia Wade final? How more patronising can the commentary get?

Anyone else watch the Virginia Wade final? How more patronising can the commentary get? I've watched this a few times over and from what I remember Dan Maskell was almost getting caught up in the event and willing Virginia to win. It was something like her 16th Wimbledon and this was likely her best chance to ever win it. The likes of Chrissie Evert was at her peak, Martina was coming through so it was almost now or never.
Dan would have had a father - daughter type relationship with Virginia as he would have known her well.
My Great Aunty was a big fan of Virginia's and my Great Uncle always used to say Virginia had a moustache as she was rather dark haired just to wind my Aunty up.
Also Virginia is 75 years old today so happy birthday Ginny and surely that Damehood is overdue. People always associate Virginia with Wimbledon but she also won two other Grand Slam Singles titles and 4 Ladies Doubles and was in the Ladies top 10 for 12 successive years. So had great longevity in her career.

She isn’t a Dame? Wow, what an omission. Andy had it easy by that comparison. She was an elegant and tough player and that match an example of both. Happy Birthday!
