I've just been listening to Michael Xavier on an old Friday Night is Music Night.
I am incredibly tempted by this, I must say.

Dare I say it, but I'm much more excited about this cast than I was when the current one was announced. Now to hope it comes to a venue near to me.

It will be nice for John Middleton to open the tour in his hometown. He probably went to the famous Alhambra pantos when he was a nipper.

yes I had to re-read the whatonstage info, but there we go. at least Mrs Pearce sings doesn't she? She sings in I Could Have Danced All Night and has a solo line, “I understand dear, it's all been grand dear, but now it's time to sleep”. Seems like such a small role for her. I wouldn’t be surprised if she missed performances.

Why on earth would someone of Lesley Garrett’s stature accept a role like this? I’m very surprised by the news.
Her previous MT roles were featured roles, but each had a spotlight moment and a fantastic song. The role of Mrs. Pearce is little more than ensemble in all honesty (especially in terms of singing). She has some dialogue here and there, but let’s be honest, Garrett has never been cast on her acting ability. She was always cast in MT as a name who could deliver a key number with ‘punch’. Mrs. Pearce has no such ‘big moment.’ A very strange decision by La Garrett.

Perhaps they might be expanding the role for her?

There are no small parts, love, only small actors. 🙂
Her twins are living their own lives, her husband has retired from general practice, so why not travel the country at someone else's expense? Good luck to her.

I hadn't realised Ashley from Emmerdale was playing Pickering. He and Lesley Garrett are well known names, I'm surprised the PR isn't making more of them, both would attract an audience. Just seems very odd

Perhaps they might be expanding the role for her? Something similar happened in Newcastle for a concert performance albeit told from Pickering's perspective. Interesting as it maybe I highly doubt anything like this will happen for the tour. More deets below- John Wilson and Nicolas Grace must of been amazing. www.musicalcriticism.com/opera/my-fair-lady-0709.shtml

Also notice it says 'Additional casting will be revealed in due course.' But isn't everyone cast? Or are some of these names only doing some dates and they aren't announcing it yet?

It’s probably the same as everyone said when Bonnie Langford was announced in the role of Mrs Harcourt in Anything Goes - it’s been a hell of a year for the entertainment industry and work is work!

Lesley Garrett has a connection with My Fair Lady. She played Eliza when she was at school. She was due to play the role for Scottish Opera in the late 80’s/90’s but was forced to pull out following a car accident. She was devastated not to play the role again.

It may seem surprising since Mrs Pearce isn't really a big singing role, but work is work and it's a big classic musical that may have been on her bucket list for a long time.
I mean otherwise, what other roles are out there for her currently? And is she being offered them? We all have bills to pay.

Saw this at the Alhambra on Saturday (forgot how massive the stage is there) and it was absolutely brilliant. Michael D. Xavier completely dominated the stage from the moment he appeared, in the best way possible of course and Charlotte Kennedy did such a fantastic job taking everyone on a journey as Eliza grows into a confident woman. I’ve seen the film several times, but I’d never connected with it on an emotional level like this. The final scene just destroyed me, first time I’ve ever cried in a theatre. Adam Woodyatt was very funny as Alfred, Lesley Garrett certainly made the most of a smaller role and she seemed to be having an absolute blast. Tom Liggins (Freddy) has one of the most gorgeous voices I’ve ever heard and fantastic comedic timing. I highly recommend catching this on tour.

Looking at Twitter it seems to be being much better received on tour than in London. There's quite a bit of buzz for it in Dublin where it opens this week.
