This says it all really... I don't understand. - Police are protecting a statue from people who want to protect it from people who don't seem to be there. - Meanwhile the man who stopped us all from having to salute like a Nazi is celebrated by men doing Nazi salutes. I mean, it's very 2020, but still. It is all appalling but the thing is. Stuff like this leads to a bit of insanity. Just ask 1920's Berlin. And it is at these moments how fractured outer society is. It is all just madness. Begun by something very real and raw and worthy.

Dominic Raab thinks ‘taking the knee’ is from Game Of Thrones.Glad he’s not a senior govt Minister or that would be truly embarrassing. Another day, another govt PR disaster.

Good thing he is kind of handsome because there doesn't seem to be a lot going on upstairs. Why a white male would feel compelled to speculate as he did is beyond me.

Simple: there is no connection at all between Mr. Raab's mouth and Mr. Raab's brain.
Assuming he has one, which is generous.

Given Mr. Johnson's record of saying racist things in public, that he wouldn't make a gesture in support of BLM is not entirely surprising. Since his entire career has been built on hot air, though, it's entertaining to see him claim he believes in "substance".

It shows how division is not going away anytime soon - I think a flashpoint regarding taking the knee might be if sport stars do it during international events while the national anthem plays I can see that not being popular at all in the country as a whole. In the USA most of the backlash comes from the perception of disrespect of the national anthem.

'You do know I was born to rule, I should kneel?'

It's entertaining to see him claim he believes in "substance" without following the word "substance" with the word "abuse".

In the USA most of the backlash comes from the perception of disrespect of the national anthem. There were the US Runners who did the Black Power fist at 1968 Mexico Olympics. I personally prefer that protest than the kneeling given GF died with a knee to his throat. I'm also wondering why under seige Governments haven't tried to turn the BLM anger towards say China where Covid started given how many BAME people have died through it.

Especially as China itself has tried to blame black people living in it's inner cities for spreading the virus - I've seen reports of 'no blacks' type signs being spotted in some Chinese cities.

I'd like to know what he thought was the substantial result of clapping week after week for the NHS. It obviously wasn't just a gesture, as he doesn't believe in them.

One point does anyone find taking the knee slightly ironic given it was a knee to the windpipe which killed George Floyd?
I personally perfer the raised fist.

Simple statistics prove nothing, the 37% support for taking the knee is not far from the % of voters who voted for this Government and nobody would infer they do not have legitimacy and are a minority Government.

I’m curious. Normally when it comes to opinion poll data, I like to go to the actual opinion poll data in order to get the actual data and not what someone on Twitter chooses to present. For example, it would be useful to know how many people were “don’t knows” on some of these topics. For example, it could be supporting footballers 37%, opposing footballers 37%, don’t knows 26%. So I went the YouGov website... and the only poll that they’ve done on race in the last two weeks (the Tweeter said published on July 16) is a US poll: docs.cdn.yougov.com/86ijosd7cy/20200611_yahoo_race_police_covid_crosstabs.pdf - no source anywhere that I can find on the YouGov website for the question on freedom of speech. People on Twitter grind axes - unless someone can point me to the original source, I’m comfortable ignoring this. (It’s usually convention for non-partisan Tweeters to link to the source data, so the fact that this person hasn’t already makes him questionable in my book - and that is the same for people on the left who do the same thing)

Found it! docs.cdn.yougov.com/wte7yyb35l/SunOnSunday_Results_200716.pdf. - not sure why it is not indexed on the main YouGov page. And what do you know, the figures on taking the knee are 37% appropriate, 37% inappropriate, 25% not sure On footballers having BLM on their shirts: 43% appropriate, 37% inappropriate, 20% not sure. I don’t have time to look through all the other claims right now but just that little bit suggests selective use of data at best, if not downright misleading.

Matthew Goodwin is a master of tweeting selective data.
I would never take anything he tweets at face value.

The culture war is evident through - one figure where it is very stark is views on Meghan Duhcess of Suffolk.
Liabilty - 51 Asset -24
But broken down people in London and 2016 remain voters only think she is a liability 42/41-38/37 while 18 -24 year olds (By 37-31) and Labour voters (42-37) think she is an asset.
And of course it is very stark around BLM. 47-18 opposition from tory voters and 47 -22 opposition from leave voters but 71-10 support from Labour voters, 62-12 from Lib Dems and 65-12 from Remain voters.
61% of tory voters think the protests should never go ahead not even after the virus but only 14% of labour voters think it - but overall not go ahead gets the pluarity.
