There’s a very good bbc docu-drama on YouTube called “Margaret” starring Lindsay Duncan about Thatcher’s final days and how they all those men she’d been handbagging for years stuck the knife in. Fascinating but just goes to show what a ruthless and crazy business Politics is. The documentary Thatcher: A Very British Revolution is also a great watch.

OK, he's apparently staying until October until a new leader is found I think this is another "I understand your concerns and I'm going to pretend I care, but really nothing's going to change". He's certainly hoping that this will shut down his critics for a while and by the time autumn comes he'll have found something to distract everyone.
(Boris frantically searches "how to kill a queen".)

I wonder how Chris Pincher is feeling. Literally the man who brought down a government.

If Boris is given 3 months he will find some way of staying on. It has to be now.
They are all a pathetic load of kids squabbling, I know its not been done but the queen could weild her power and force it to a head, even if it means an election. This can't go on, we need a working government to see us through these times.

That leaving speech outside number ten was a bit Trumpian wasn't it?

There is just no way he can lead for three months. So few MPs do have confidence in him we currently have no functioning Government. How would anything get done?
Mind you, the longer he stays the worse it gets for the Tories, so not all bad.

A popular tabloid newspaper compared Theresa May to Margaret Thatcher and Boris Johnston to Winston Churchill! It was Winston Churchill that famously said that "the opposition sit opposite you, your enemy sits behind you." Which is too true for Boris 'Winston' Johnston.

He hasn't even gone yet and they're rewriting history and trying to tell us old Boris wasn't so bad on all the newscasts. BBC still won't call him a liar even though that's what destroyed him in the end, never mind that he's arrogant, vain, entitled, ruthless, backstabbing, sexually incontinent, homophobic, racist, sexist and totally lacking empathy for anyone but himself.

Lest we not forget, Blair was also pushed out of office by Brown. It may not have been played out in public but it was nonetheless done in a ruthless manner. Brown also had attempted coups launched at his leadership.
Another thing that those on the Labour benches may like to recall, Corbyn suffered an even bigger set of resignations and clung on to the leadership. Propped up by the current leader of the Labour Party...
Labour isn't quite as good at getting rid of failing leaders as the Tories.
The LDs also have been known to turn on leaders very rapidly.
All parties go through periods of leadership crises. Admittedly the past few days has been perhaps the most extreme but certainly not without precedent in our political history.
The world of Twitter has meant that it has been played out far more publicly than ever before.

The thing that I find distasteful about modern politics is the hypocrisy and holier than thou posturing.
It affects all parties.
More humility and honesty would do us all good
And it would certainly do politicians good to actually study our laws and constitution before going in front of a camera/keyboard.
Learn what mechanisms exist within our set up before starting to make pointless demands.
The same also goes for political journalists who should really do their homework before asking a single question.

Also on the day that the former PM of Japan has been assassinated, we all should strive to take the heat out of politics.
Move towards data driven policy making. Not allow things to be driven by dogma

The same also goes for political journalists who should really do their homework before asking a single question. True, to an extent. There are deals and manoeuvres in all parties, and often people involved know there are bodies buried, and want to act before they surface. But I don't think it's dishonest to say this particular crop are spectacularly awful. They've known about the bodies, and have been gaslighting the public about their existence for months. This goes beyond disagreeing on policy, but cuts to the heart of what it means to be a public servant. Johnson got rid of everyone who might stand up against him and surrounded himself with yes men and women. He's not the first, and probably not the last, but too many people saw what was happening and supported him anyway - largely to satisfy their Brexit nationalism. Speaking of nationalists turning a blind eye for the cause. It's about time Ian Blackford resigned for his involvement with the Patrick Grady incident. For those unfamiliar, the story is remarkably similar to Mr Pincher's. A young member of staff (nineteen at the time) reported sexual harassment to Blackford back in 2016. Blackford thought it would be a good idea to abandon protocol and force the victim into a meeting with his assaulter - without advanced warning. His assaulter being the Chief Whip of the SNP, who stayed in post all during the investigation. The investigation upheld the complaint and he was suspended, albeit briefly, from parliament. Blackford (amongst others) was recorded encouraging SNP MPs to welcome him back and give him support after his suspension. The victim has been bullied by the SNP group, and just this week had his email access suspended because he has complained about how he was treated during the process. Nicola Sturgeon knew about it too. I think there were some half-hearted attempts to claim a lack of knowledge of the specific details (just like Johnson), but it's not credible. Grady did finally resign the SNP Whip, but good luck finding anyone in the SNP who will condemn him, Blackford or Sturgeon.

The SNP handling of this has been appalling. Blackford and Sturgeon should both resign.
But they won't.
Sturgeon as a dreadful track record when dealing with issues of abuse.

I don't know if the party could stop him calling an election. He might lose but if a PM was getting it from all sides he puts a lot of the problem members out of seats and they wouldn't get all the extra jobs/opportunities a future PM may get? People know I'm a Tory but I said a few months ago he needs to go for the sake of the party. 12 years we've been back in power only the last few with any sort of majority and that was dominated by Brexit and Covid. I wonder if Mr Javid regrets resigning in Feb 2020 as a couple more year's as Chancellor and it would have made more impact and he'd have been at top of the queue to replace Boris. I am questioning if you are True Blue Tory though. Too nice I am economically right wing but socially more centralist. I think the "nasty" side of both major parties are the the very right wing tories and the ultra left of the the Labour Party

Mind you, the longer he stays the worse it gets for the Tories, so not all bad. If anyone was going to take their toys and leave it was Boris. If a PM resigned then it causes a possible constitutional crisis and does HM on advice from the Gov ask someone to form a Govt in theory Mr Raab as deputy but Tories don't often have deputy leaders. An opposition leader quitting and the deputy taking over as has happened with Labour on a few occasions is different. Also Labour have a nominated Deputy Leader who can take over. In some ways with Commons in recess next week Boris staying on makes sense. Say he had gone, Raab says no thanks. Could one of the leadership candidates fairly step in as a stand in PM or do you ask the Tories to find a caretaker leader. That is almost getting into Francis Urquhart territory and Mr Rees-Mogg couldn't possibly comment!

I think Boris will go on one of the reality shows either next year or the year after, he'd get some decent dosh especially from IAC, probably be too expensive for Strictly.

No I've been Tory since John Major took over, voted Labour for my first couple of times, nearly voted Green in 1989 Euros before then. But where I live has always een safe Labour Parliamentary seat never even went Blue in 1983.
Sir Kier in many ways would be a perfect Tory he looks more a Tory than most of them. Like Therese Coffey if ever you had a Labour Social Worker type femminist characterture it would be her.
With politics it is the middle 20% or so of voters who decide an election those who voted for Maggie or then later demographic voted for Tony and who supported Boris last time who decides any election.
Really if Kier coud plug into the 40% that Catweazle got in 2017 he'd be in a pretty strong position but was that a remain protest vote.

Historically, but these days it's really the press who 'decide' well in advance with their vicious twist on character, policy and action through disinformation on an industrial scale. The people merely action this decision.

The press has been Tory leaning apart from the Mirror/Guardian/Independent for as long as I can remember. But with press/media in so many forms now, its hard to judge ho listens/reads and believes what. Both Labour and Tories have accused Beeb and ITV of being in favour with the other usually when they are in power. Mr Wilson and Mrs Thatcher both had distrust and tried to clup Beeb's wings.
In last couple of years I've really noticed how a news editorial can keep a story high or low news, does this have to be in line with the Government's agenda, hopefully not and the press do point out inconsistencies and double standards.
Lets get all those Bishops on the spot when they virtue signal about deporting people hear their views on Roe vs Wade etc. Call out the likes of the green brigade who travel around the world telling us to cut down our emissions etc,

Posts removed. Can we please not discuss public figures (or anyone else) who have been found not guilty in a criminal trial as if they are actually guilty. Thanks.
