What is wrong with hiring someone who sings AND acts the hell out of a role?
Because if one of these 2 things is not sensational, it harms the other.

I am fortunate to have seen all the London Normas at the Adelphi and Elaine Paige came the closest in my opinion to the above with the acting AND the singing. However, despite her frail (at times) vocals (tonight at least) she just IS Norma Desmond and the packed 2000 plus audience in the theatre tonight were completely captivated. I have very rarely seen a reaction like it in the theatre to a performance.

I didn't see Glenn Close on stage, I saw Norma.

During parts of Glenn Close's performance tonight and especially during As If We Never Day Goodbye you could have heard a pin drop in the audience - not a cough, no sweet wrappers, no talking - silence - like a collected held breath. I have been privileged to witness her performance twice. I would have been gutted to have missed her.

P.S. Graham Norton and Lord Andrew Lloyd Webber (together) were in tonight! I wonder what his Lordship thought about GC's vocal exploits since he is a man about the voice. Let's hope she is fully up and running on all cylinders asap

Am going again on Saturday afternoon - C1 in Balcony for £12 (is the view that bad?) and then back again for the final matinee on the 7th.
This really is too good a production not too see as much as possible. Hope Close holds up till the end now!

C1's pretty good actually, for a £12 seat. You're way off to the side so will miss some staging, but there's no one behind you so you can lean forward with impunity, and all the important bits (Xavier in his trunks) are centre stage. Plus if I had to be way over to one side for the final scene, I think the low number side is the place to be.

Let's hope she is fully up and running on all cylinders asap No problems. She was firing on all cylinders last night and on top form. In my opinion little difference from the previous performance I saw on the 14th. By the way, I was also lucky enough to see Ria's dramatic first understudy performance which was brilliant. So interesting to see the contrasting performances within the same production.

Anyone sat in C1 of the Dress Circle? Sitting there tomorrow night (already seen it once so not allowing myself to be overly worried) and wondered what the view will be like?

I would rather someone who can sell the songs like Glenn and act the hell out of it, than someone more 'musical theatre' who can belt the numbers and not fully inhabit the role.
See also Judi Dench in A Little Night Music .. Sublime and definitive.

No, but sat in the aisle seat next to it only on the other side (C49) and it was fantastic. You might be a bit more limited than I was with the wall of a box next to you but the person next to you having additional legroom should hopefully mean you have some wriggle room too.
This is for Laura btw!

So, I saw Ria in this on Saturday. And she sang the hell out of that glorious score alongside that unctuous orchestra. The theatre was gorgeous and the audience around me were very well behaved with the ex epsilon of one *. But the script screams for the leading lady to act the hell out of Norma and sadly I found this side of her performance lacking. Having watched Glenn Close in various films over the years, it simply reinforced my disappointment that she was too unwell to perform. Four days on I'm still gutted. Sue. I'm so sorry you didn't get to see her Thank you, Burly. I feel like my turban has completely unraveled and is now sitting in a puddle, bedraggled and completely knotted!

I know it's an actual newspaper but I find that all a bit dubious. A "severe" chest infection that a 69 year old actress only misses four shows for? I don't think she was on a drip for 3 days either, just that she was in whichever private hospital for a comfy three days, and probably had a bag of fluids put up when she came in for a bit of support. Nonetheless if she was hospitalised then she obviously was very keen to get back into the show, appearing back so quickly. Few would be so dedicated.

I heard she actually died for a few minutes but was resuscitated, such was her will to finish the run #greateststar

Agreed, I've had a 'mild' chest infection since Sunday and I still can't make it through half an hour without coughing and sound like I'm underwater. Breathing too deeply makes me cough. No way is she back already if she had a severe chest infection.

Let's just all get over the fact she missed shows. She's back now.. And she's a marvel.
