I've said this before. It's clear that the ENO have a massive communications breakdown. It's all about managing your patrons and your image, and they've done a lousy job at doing that. They need some serious comms consultants to sort it out. #PRSweetyPRPR

The Today program on Radio4 ran a feature on the role of an understudy, with the Ria being the premiss of the discussion. If anyone is interested then you can hear it here, scroll through to 2hr 25mins. www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b0785nl5#play

I think Glenn should rest up until say next Monday so that she is on top form for when I see her. Nothing worse than going back to work too early then being ill again. Tell her she can self certificate for a week without needing a doctors note.

Am I alone in picturing the Producers, the ENO and possibly Andre LW echoing Charles Hart’s famous words from another familiar piece?
ANDRE: Your public needs you!
FIRMIN: We need you, too!
CARLOTTA: (unassuaged) Would you not rather have your precious little ingenue?
ANDRE/FIRMIN: Signora, no! the world wants you!
(The MANAGERS adopt their most persuasive attitudes) ANDRE/FIRMIN: Prima donna first lady of the stage! Your devotees are on their knees to implore you!
ANDRE: Can you bow out when they're shouting your name?
FIRMIN: Think of how they all adore you!
BOTH: Prima donna, enchant us once again!
ANDRE: Think of your muse...
FIRMIN: And of the queues round the theatre!
BOTH: Can you deny us the triumph in store? Sing, prima donna, once more!
And then…
ANDRE/FIRMIN: (aside) Leading ladies are a trial!
GIRY: This miscasting will invite damnation...
ANDRE/FIRMIN: Tears...oaths... Lunatic demands are regular occurrences!
ANDRE/FIRMIN: Surely there'll be further scenes - worse than this!
ANDRE/FIRMIN: Prima donna the world is at your feet! A nation waits, and how it hates to be cheated
CARLOTTA: The stress that falls upon a famous prima donna! Terrible diseases, coughs and colds and sneezes! Still, the driest throat will reach the highest note, in search of perfect opera!

Friend who bought ticket to see Ria between the "she's off" and "she's on" announcements earlier reports there was an announcement pre-show that GC had been very ill with flu but had *insisted* (announcer's emphasis) she would come on tonight but that she "asked for your understanding" (cue rapturous applause and whoops)...
I won't provide a hearsay report of her performance, it's for those who are there to report back, but that did make it sound like she was perhaps coming back too soon.

Nobody can play her like I can. It took her three days and she was ready. I've come home at last. Wonder of Glenn has an astrologist who sacrificed a chicken?

Perhaps a bit croaky in places, but deliciously Norma Desmond, rising from the sickbed for her fans out there in the darkness. Thoroughly enjoyed it and feel like sweeping down the road dramatically now (seeing that I'm not Norma, I went for the more rational option of boarding a bus by hailing the driver with a slightly more dramatic wave then required)

I had no idea you were planning a comeback.
I hate that word; it's a 'return'.

Despite the request for understanding, GC gave a breathtaking performance tonight. Absolutely bonkers but not in any way cartoonish. Hope Michael X doesn't come down with her flu, as she does kiss him more than once. And he kisses Betty. Who kisses Artie... The whole cast could be laid up by Thursday, when we see it for the last time from the back of the balcony!

Was also there tonight. Having been twice before I was one of the people looking forward to seeing Ria!
Indeed Glenn asked for 'understanding.' Whilst of course the acting was there as per, her voice was all over the place. Between the will she/won't she make the note and being constantly terrified that she was going to fall down the stairs, all made for uncomfortable viewing.
That said, the audience went wild.

And will Wardrobe remember to get them dry-cleaned before he wears them? ...And then again when Michael returns? (Or perhaps they have special liners, or something, on stage???) Oh the Drama of it all...

Sheridan Smith is absent from Funny Girl and they give refunds...
People: OMG, THAT IS SO UNFAIR!!
Glenn Close is absent from Sunset Boulevard and they don't give refunds...

Michael Xavier has teeny tiny whities on under the trunks. Front row gives you a whole other view of things.

He wears "safety" underwear under his swimming trunks. He's not actually going fully commando when he takes off the swimming shorts.

Pah, I prefer not being able to see such details and being able to go with the fantasy that the trunks are all there is.

I assume he needs somewhere for the microphone pack, the only other option I can think of would be quite uncomfortable
