A couple of questions/thoughts
1/ I'm led to believe that many shows are filmed during their run as a record. So there is the potential for these to be made available to buy. Is this a good idea? Or even possible? I'm just wondering whether things like NT Live have increased or decreased the physical audiences. Seems to me it could go either way - people stay away because they've seen it or they catch the bug and want to see it for real.
2/ I'm not condoning bootlegging but my experience of it has been pretty poor copies put on YouTube. I don't want this thread closed so let's tread carefully. I reckon there are three types of bootlegs:
a/ Personal use. I often wish I had a personal record of some of the shows I've seen to refresh my memory. I know that The Manchester Royal Exchange's Dr Faustus with Ben Kingsley in the 80s was brilliant but the memory has faded so much.
b/ Those that end up on Youtube. No money is changing hands and it could be argued that it's keeping a show in the public eye.
c/ Professional profit making - no no no. No profit off the back of other people's work.
That's my view. I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on it. Feel free to tell me I'm totally wrong - here to learn.
