I think the feeling is that TAMMY FAYE would have major appeal for Broadway audiences as Tammy Faye Bakker was a household name in America for much of the 1980s - 1990s but not really known on this side of the pond. In addition, her story lends itself to musical treatment and having Elton John behind it certainly doesn't hurt.
On the plus side, they have been redeveloping the show since the Almeida version so to see it made bigger, better and (hopefully) Broadway ready will be interesting.

I’ll be gutted if this doesn’t come back, why not perfect it here then chuck it over the pond?? Even for a short run. I really enjoyed this. And Andrew is hawt. And talented too haha

It’s a majority UK team and there’s an audience for it here. Whilst I don't necessarily disagree with you BVM, something in me says that Americans would relate to religious evangelism and TV evangelism, more that we would over here in the UK. And it's my understanding that the height of Tammy Faye Baker's fame was in the late 80's, which is not that long ago for people to forget. There was also that recent Jessica Chastain film about Tammy Faye Baker that she won the Academy Award for. So, whilst she may not have been coming into people home via television like she used to - I do realise that she has passed on- although everyone from that time has moved on, the memory is still there.

You are of course right - certainly I get that it IS an American story (all be it one the UK audiences very much took to). It just seems a shame not to build on it's success here before risking the transfer. And Broadway is pretty unpredictable. I thought New York New York would have been an easy win there but it closed in a similar amount of months to Bad Cinderella.

You know it’s interesting that you say that.
I’m couldn’t say with absolute certainty if we took to TV evangelism in Australia. It may be a case that we did, but I was too young to truly understand it.
I do have vague memories of it. It was on Sunday mornings or very late in the evenings. Not to sure if it was live and that was because of the time zones.
I mentioned it to a friend when I saw the show and she said she remembered it vividly.

More news, which actually pre-dates Andrew Rannells statement last week that a Broadway production of TAMMY FAYE may come soon. In an interview from September, Jake Shears mentions at least one new song going in (let's hope there are a couple more) and that there was a workshop in October. One must assume, given A Rannell's suggestion it might come 'sooner than we think', that the workshop was a success. Virgin Radio speaks with Jake Shears

Nooooooooooo. Don’t get me wrong I’m happy that it’s getting a second life but I’m assuming this means no chance for London?

A shame they are seemingly snubbing a London transfer. It didn’t work for Groundhog Day…

Disappointing for us but could well have been the plan from the outset.
To produce and stage a new musical at a relatively small highly regarded theatre like the Almeida must have cost a fraction of the cost of going straight to Broadway, and there are positive reviews to help create an initial buzz there.

The talk on broadwayworld is it will be the reopening show at the renovated Palace Theatre, after a limited series of concerts by big names.
If true, the Palace seems ambitious

The Palace?! My thought was a theatre in the 1100-1200 range like the Broadhurst or if they wanted to go smaller the Walter Kerr.

Curious how much of the UK cast will be with it. Guessing Katie and Andrew will be in the lead roles but kind of hoping the cast Broadway/American for the remaining roles.
Already picturing Brooks Ashmanskas as Falwell…

That theatre is huge. That would be a huuuuge mistake. Even if they expanded the design- it still isn’t a ‘big’ show.

At the Almeida, nothing is a big show, but it did allow them to test the material. The Palace may or may not be the theatre of choice but I have a feeling that given the recent revamp/workshop and move to Broadway, it will bear minor comparison to the previous production and for good reason if they are heading to a bigger house.

Nothing is being snubbed intentionally.
There were plans in place to transfer to the Gillian Lynn before the Almeida run started, which had to be cancelled after Katie announced her pregnancy and after all involved how crucial she was to the success of the show. They hoped to postpone the W/E run till early 2024 but Skye's Edge ended up taking the slot they wanted, and there was no other theatre available that met their requirements.
Alot of people worked hard to try to make a West End transfer happen. It's a shame they were not successful. It happens. A future West End run isn’t impossible but there are no active plans as of this moment. However things change all the time in theatre. 🤞

James Graham was on Desert Island Discs this week and he chose Tammy Faye as one of his choices, they play a bit of Katie singing If You Came to See Me Cry – www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/m001x48w
