Enjoyed it a lot - surprised there was no Gypsy or West Side Story and heavy on Into the Woods & SITPWG.
Ladies Who Lunch with that gorgeous trio was the highlight!

Well, this was the best 2 and a bit hours I've had all lockdown. Like all the best Sondheim productions, I was moved to laughter and moved to tears.
Highlights were Audra, Christine and Meryl (obviously), Donna Murphy, Patti LuPone playing against type, Jake and Annaleigh (WOW!), Schwartz' Follies overture, Aaron Tveit, Judy Kuhn, Alexander Gemignani and Michael Cerveris. Some absolutely stunning performances made even more special given the limitations.

No Gypsy and West Side because he didn't write the music I guess?
But yes, best time I've had all lockdown. Chip Zien holding his hat and singing No More was a little too much for me to handle and I sobbed. Same with Donna Murphy singing Send in the Clowns

I'm up to Ben Platt and loving it. Have to stop now as need to make my daily phone call to my dad and have dinner but I'll be back to finish it later.

Well that was a great 2 hours with some wonderful performances. Favourites for me were Neil Patrick Harris and the ladies lunching. Oddest was Mandy Patinkin, understandably. Most disappointing was Jake Gyllanhaal only because he sang so beautifully and I just know that I wont get to see him in June now.
Was also pleased at how bad the mens hair was and I dont feel so bad now looking at mine.

Some great performances in this. I have very different views to some people on here. Loved Elizabeth Stanley, she really made me appreciate the song far more than i ever have. Chip Zien because it was simple, understated, but told the whole story. Linda Lavin because the song is hilarious and she just sells it. Maria Friedman because she knocked it out of the park despite everything she's been through and you could feel the joy coming from her.
Some did absolutely nothing for me - Ladies Who Lunch. Meh. Mandy Patinkin - some odd choices. Move on - maybe because it wasn't in context but also they didn't make me believe it. I'm wondering if it would be better in the full show....not convinced.
I did try and stay up for it, but when it got to 2am, i had to call it quits. Thankfully its now preserved forever.

Yeah I agree, ladies who lunch was fun but done it that way was a bit of a waste of song and performers. Baranski could have just sung that on her own, with Meryl doing I'm still here and Audra singing Losing My Mind.

Surprised Being Alive was not included but otherwise a great tribute.

Did my ears get used to it or did they sequence the worst audio ones first?
A mixed bag but worth it. "Down by the sea" the biggest surprise from a performer I'd never heard of.
I recently saw saw on iplayer the Prom that marked his 80th. A much more satisfactory 'show'. Worth checking out.
Miss Peter's definitely has her portrait in the attic...
Many Happy Returns "Mr Sondheim".

Every minute of it is just pure gold. What other documentaries on Sondheim would you recommend?

I like this conversation between Sondheim and Adam Guettel on songwriting.
YouTube also has a good recording of a conversation between Tony Kushner and Sondheim.

Stevie made a cameo on BBC breakfast today at around 8.20. The whole bit starts at 8.11 and is truly special. Highly recommended!

I know Stephen is very smart. In regards to the musical Into the Woods was the double meaning 'You can’t live in the woulds. If you’re always thinking about what would have been you aren’t living in the here and now.' was hat double meaning actually intended. saw this idea posted by Moriah Giov on

I've just watched the Six by Sondheim film and agree it is wonderful. The only thing that I didn't like was the Jarvis Cocker 'I'm Still Here', the inclusion of which I found baffling when there are so many other great performances that do justice to the song. He was terrible.

Happy Birthday Stephen!
I was watching the Sweeney Todd South Bank Show the other day & SS was still so handsome into his 50s.
Do we think he'll even finish that Bunuel musical?
