It may be based on the finest comedy ever written, but after Tootsie and Mrs Doubtifre back-to-back do we really need another musical with the same gimmick at its core?

I'm REALLY hoping the upcoming Smash cast reunion and screening of the Bombshell concert gets wheels in motion on it getting a full stage debut again... Some Like it Hot just leaves me (pardon the pun) cold. Not least because most of the movie takes place on a train, iconically so, and that doesn't lend itself to the most dynamic staging. |

Some Like it Hot just leaves me (pardon the pun) cold. Not least because most of the movie takes place on a train, iconically so, and that doesn't lend itself to the most dynamic staging. Only a small part of the film is on a train, most of it is set on the coast. As for Smash, I hope once they get the ball rolling on actually staging it, I hope they do a documentary alongside it - we have the fictitious pre-production, so it’s be interesting to see the real life path to stage. |

Going massively off topic now, but I thought the execution in Season 1 was pretty good, but it really went off the boil in Season 2 - I didn't care for anyone involved in Hit List, and the never-ending rehearsal process for Bombshell made absolutely no sense. The live stream last night seems to have done well though, and Megan Hilty posted a little Season 3 hint on twitter (which I'm sure is only wishful thinking on her behalf, but still....) |

Very Shaiman and Wittman, and I really like it! The great thing about their scores is that they always use proper instruments, and don't just put everything on keyboards.
I'm looking forward to hearing more.
It's such a shame that CATCH ME IF YOU CAN hasn't been seen over here in the UK yet!

Been getting generally positive reviews on Twitter from trans and non-binary people - general consensus is ‘still some bits that fail, but the gender euphoria of Daphne in Act 2 is a hit’. I hope that this means the consensus will raise it above the comparisons to Tootsie and Mrs Doubtfire.
I love the original film and I hate that it’s been labelled as ‘unwatchable transphobic’ when it is somewhat flawed but ultimately massively groundbreaking for the 1950’s and surprisingly queer (in the ending romance angle, and also one of the men becoming more comfortable as a woman). I understand trans people not wanting to see the tropes play out, but the film is so much more than ‘oh men dressed as women, how funny!’
I am really happy they’ve apparently made Daphne more explicitly gender non-conforming - something that is somewhat implied in the film but obviously not actually in the text.

The fact that J Harrison Ghee who plays Daphne is non-binary and has had some influence in creating the character is surely a step forward. Apparently Osgood has more of a back story (and a solo number) which adds another layer to their story. Also notable is the fact that they journey west rather than south to avoid the problems that black musicians would inevitably have encountered in the thirties in Southern states.
