I thought it might be helpful to remind people of the date of Pride in London this year.
It is earlier than usual on Saturday 27th June (a week after West End Live)
I know some like to avoid London because of the million extra people on the streets - and some like to make the trip to be part of the event.
Parade Route, I believe, is the same as usual

I haven't been since the year they had it in Hyde Park and there was torrential rain all day about 15 years ago.
It used to be really good in London, but they haven't really bothered doing anything big since that disaster.
I usually go to Manchester or occasionally Brighton, it's a lot more fun and an actual event type atmosphere!

Putting on a parade with 30000+ participants, attended by over 1 million people, providing entertainment in 5 different squares as well as running a month long festival of cultural and sporting events and an ongoing political campaign is actually doing a huge amount. It might not have expensive pop stars. But Pride isn't a music festival. It is a protest. And it doesn't cost a penny to attend. Manchester charges you just to walk down Canal Street. They charge you a lot more for the entertainment. Brighton and Birmingham also charge significant sums. Pride in London is not perfect but it works hard to represent the many communities that make up the LGBT+ family. And it is free. Perhaps it is time to have another look. It is a completely different organisation to the one that ran things 15 years ago.

(and yes, I do volunteer for the core team that puts on the event - but my focus is on the well-being of the volunteers, so I am not privy to much of what is being planned for the day)

I will be in London that weekend but only for shows (Cheyenne Jackson!), not for Pride celebrations. I hope those attending have a great day though 😀

I used to go to Pride every year, did a few years as a steward as well, but then i didn't go for a long time, not for any particular reason, just didn't want to be in all those crowds.
I volunteered in the office when London held World Pride, and i was shocked at how unprepared it was and how nothing had been organised. It was no surprise when the day was nothing like it could have been. Such a wasted opportunity.
But i have been for the past few years and have loved being back in town with the crowds, the atmosphere and enjoying seeing the diversity that London represents. Yes it has got very corporate, but it needs the money to pay for it all, and that i can understand, but i do wish that the ordinary LGBTQ+ could march as well, like they did back in the day.

but i do wish that the ordinary LGBTQ+ could march as well, like they did back in the day. They can and they do. There is space in the parade for individuals to march. Plus not a single community group which meets the criteria is excluded from the parade. Corporate groups have had their numbers reduced to provide space for this to happen. Community groups are at the heart of the parade.

Took my niece to her first pride in London a couple of years ago. After 4.5hrs of the parade going past even she gave up.
It’s no longer a protest - it’s a parade of companies. I think I lost the will to live when a group of people walked past with signs that read “Lucasfilms’! What the the hell has George or his film company done for the larger LGBTQIA+ community?

Trans pride in Brighton is the only one worth going to anymore - a proper protest, a proper community event

I think I lost the will to live when a group of people walked past with signs that read “Lucasfilms’! What the the hell has George or his film company done for the larger LGBTQIA+ community? Priorities have shifted in the past couple of years to take account of concerns. Which is why corporate group numbers are way down and community participation is way up. As I have said before, Pride in London is not perfect but it is trying to do better each year. And if you believe in it being a free event that takes over the heart of our capital city, then the costs have to be covered by sponsors. I would rather put up with vetted corporate groups being part of the parade to keep the whole thing free. Charging people who want to attend a Pride to walk down the street - as happens in other major UK Prides - is just wrong. I am happy to explain more about how PiL is striving to be better. It does listen and it does learn - it takes the responsibility of being a major event very seriously. If everyone who attended Pride in London on the day donated just £1, there would not need to be any corporate sponsorship. Those Prides who claim to be inclusive and then charge you £15+ to walk into the 'Gay Village' are the ones with the wrong priorities- at least in view.

Unsurprisingly, Pride in London has now been “postponed”

The hope is to stage a Pride event later in the year if at all possible. It is too early to say what form that might take.
It is clearly the right decision.

Expected. We get good weather in the UK still in August/September so if the current crisis is over there’s still room to have it I suppose.

I remain unconvinced that an event that attracts 1.2 million people into tgr heart of London is a good plan
But I will wait until the next board update

What about the iconic Clapham Pride on the side street along from Kazbar (is that even still there?!)? I wanna see Sandra and Rose Garden!

It was the right decision to not proceed this year.
If only half the usual numbers attend that would still be over half a million people in Soho and surrounding streets. That can't be a good idea

Have to admit I thought the choice of 11 September as a date was a bit insensitive given this year is the 20 year anniversary of the Twin Towers.
