This is a bold choice. Yes, Tennant sells tickets, but this is a play which was not well received in its last London outing, nor in its cinematic version starring Viggo Mortensen. And the parallels to modern day are already being drawn by many of us, do we really want to pay to sit through a play which spells out the doom and gloom we're already well aware of?

ATG member booking now open. Pricing not QUITE as bad as for the Jamie Lloyd season - the upper circle is more reasonable at any rate with restricted view tickets at £20, £25 and £35. Still going to give it a miss!

It was a hit for the RSC in about 1980 with Alan Howard. Didnt the Donmar do a revival with Charles Dance? Interesting choice, the dates mean Tennant would still be free for a Stratford R3 in early 2021.

Thanks for the advice on seats- I am likely going to give it a miss. I signed up for the membership hoping it would give me some benefits re tickets but there is absolutely no point as prices are exactly the same as for non members! This venue's prices seem to be extortionate compared to other west end places.

Relatively easy booking even though I did have to stay up past my bedtime. Some ridiculous prices - lots of 'Premium Package' seats in the stalls.

I signed up for the membership hoping it would give me some benefits re tickets but there is absolutely no point as prices are exactly the same as for non members! You only save booking fees on the big stuff with ATG, that's true. Also first pick of the cheap tickets. Which is almost 4 pounds per booking. If you book a lot with ATG it gets a big amount very quickly.

Which was its last London outing? The Michael Grandage production at the Donmar about 20 years ago was deservedly very well-received.

I love DT, but I wish he wouldn't cast all his best mates all the time. If I had a that choice I would chose the people I enjoy working with. I do have that choice, and I choose to use that privilege to give people from marginalised or overlooked backgrounds a leg up, rather than engaging in nepotism as much as possible. Surely actors only grow by working with different people who may have different styles? Working with your mates all the time doesn’t seem challenging.

I’m not daft enough to think Tennant has no input whatsoever in such matters, but surely casting is decided by a wider group of people, some with more sway than even he’d have? Anyway, E17 booked (thank you Theatremonkey). I love Mr Tennant but I can’t justify upwards of £80 on anything except opera (and only then because you often don’t have a choice of anything cheaper!).

Got the ATG card presale this am. Logged on to site, saw the ticket prices then quickly logged out. I’ll happily wait for any news on special offers or day seats for this if any appear during the run.

I did exactly the same as david: logged on, saw prices and seats available, logged off in horror and dismay. I think Tennant is a terrific actor, and would absolutely *love* to see him on stage (in fact, he's one of the people I really, really want to see), but I cannot afford to spend anything close to what they are asking for a decent seat, so it might be worthwhile to just wait for offers.

I felt the same way and I also really wanted to see Cyrano de Bergerac, but I cannot justify spending upwards of £100 for a "decent" seat. The LLoyd company (or is it the Playhouse deciding what to charge?) have the most ridiculous seat prices I have seen in the West End. no less than 65 for a restricted view is daylight robbery...

Re: casting, I know DT had full casting approval over Much Ado (and handpicked Josie Rourke to direct), but he was an exec producer. In that situation he did cast three of his best friends, but also ensured two of the lead roles went to unknowns (including giving Tom Bateman his first professional role), something which almost certainly wouldn’t have been approved without the star power of Tennant and Tate to equalise things. So I do applaud him for that, and hope he does similar here. (And hope there are no child roles for his “dynastic” brood of child actor kids!) I think he is generally powerful enough to demand casting input/approval as a condition of acceptance.
