Came across E01 of Season 1 of “Julia” on YouTube. It’s an HBO Max show about Julia Child and her tv show The French Chef which is considered to be the birth of tv cooking shows. David Hyde Pierce, Bebe Neuwith and as Julia Childs our very own Sarah Lancashire! She’s doing the voice and everything. I don’t know if we can even have HBO Max in the U.K. but it will presumably land on one of our platforms. I just thought it was incongruous seeing our lovely Sarah with real Hollywood actors. Very mixed reviews on IMDb though. There are 4 episodes already on Now TV (Sky Atlantic).

Thats interesting. I didnt realise it was a TV series, thought it was a cinema film. There's a documentary film in cinemas and a TV drama starring Sarah Lancashire, which are completely separate, but they're both called "Julia".

The Morning Show... available on AppleTV+ rather than Netflix/Prime (but a streaming platform nonetheless) Jeepers. Series 1, what a ride. Incredibly strong characters. Obviously some heartfelt deep writing has gone into this. Deliberately awkward scenes as we progress into the story. I'd written off Jennifer Aniston as basically 'Rachel' in everything but she absolutely nails the co-host on the edge. High praise and a strong recommend. Series 2 is less strong IMO. Watchable but loses the focus that the first series has.

Quite liked the first episode of Julia. I’ve heard the name but know nothing about her.
Strange seeing Sarah Lancashire in an American series, she’s great but I’d have thought they’d want someone’s who’s more of a ‘name’ in America (they apparently cast Joan Cusack originally.)
I was surprised how old David Hyde-Pierce looked, but it’s somehow been eighteen years since Frasier ended. 😱

Slow Horses on Apple TV worth the sub. I think if you are canny you can watch it for free, then cancel. But it is being ‘dropped’ weekly not all at once. Shame cos I love a binge.

Yes, another vote for Slow Horses here. Gary Oldmans character is really unpleasant isn’t he? I can’t help but think that there is something else to Slough House than what we’ve seen so far, because I’m not sure why you’d keep him on.

Yes, another vote for Slow Horses here. Gary Oldmans character is really unpleasant isn’t he? I can’t help but think that there is something else to Slough House than what we’ve seen so far, because I’m not sure why you’d keep him on. Read the books…lots more on all of the characters. I know that doesn’t matter and tv should stand on its own merits but the books are terrific.

Heartstopper on Netflix. Probably more aimed at a younger audience, it was a really great series and the two lads who play the leads for me were fantastic and along with Olivia Coleman was worth the watch.

I'm probably not the demographic for this series but I bloody loved it. Just finished it about 10 minutes ago and just wished it had gone on and on. Such a lovely heart-warming story.

Really enjoyed Heartstopper too. Lovely to have something sweet to watch.
Final episodes of Ozark are out today. So I imagine I’ll have a bloody violent bank holiday viewing.

Apple TV Slow Horses. Just trust me. Apple TV Plus in general. Severance is outstanding. Really enjoyed WeCrashed. Started on Pachinko which is really beautiful. And like they said above Slow Horses is one to watch.

Ten Percent on Amazon Prime. I believe its the British version of Call My Agent. Lots of cameo performances and it's rather good. I'm about half way through the series and only started watching it this afternoon. I am really enjoying this too. The acting is great and it's interesting how they managed to create perfect British counterparts to the original French ones. I like the London environment and in particularly the attention given to London theatre. I enjoy seeing everywhere in the Agency posters of many theatre productions I saw (especially the Donmar ones).

I worked for the Olympics for several years and we were based at Canary Wharf in one of the big tower blocks. When watching 2012 on TV I recognised several of the characters and plot lines. I later found out that the BBC were using offices in the same building to film a lot of the series and apparantly the staff used to hear snippits of conversation going up in the lifts and an element of these conversations were used in the series. This is why it was quite realistic and very funny.

Scrolled back a few pages and surprised to see no mention of AppleTV's The Tragedy of Macbeth. Phwoar. Denzil Washington makes for a monumental Macbeth, paired with Frances McDormand as Lady Macbeth - who I'm yet to see disappoint in a role - but it's Joel Coen's vision that steals the show. Though also of note was the epically disjointed performance of Katheryn Hunter as the Three Witches, incredible interpretation. I have a huge soft spot for screen productions that don't rely on locations and physical verbatim set; and the decision to shoot this on elaborate yet simple sets on a soundstage really plays into the theatricality of the piece. At many times it looked like it could have been an epic theatrical production filmed on stage. I love this style of production (Mark Gattis' Dracula touched on this in the third episode also). I often rant to friends about how more screenwork could/should use theatrical devices and physical sets shot on soundstages over location work, just like this. The less detail there is to distract you, the more attention you have for the actors and the dialogue. It always feels like the overly epic sets and locations are often making up for a deficit in other areas. The entire production design is genius in it's use of colour (or lack thereof) strengthening the piece's dark undertones. The square aspect ratio of the picture makes close-up shots even more powerful. This shot encapsulates the theatrical styling of the production which I fell in love with.
