Saw Liam Doyle at the Other Palace for the Saturday matinee. The Other Palace is running a series of concerts with musical theatre names, billed as "New Year, New Favourites", downstairs in the Studio. This will probably be the only concert in the series I get to as it fit my schedule (and there was a good deal on tickets).
These are intimate concerts, one performer (and guests) plus a pianist. The idea is they're mainly showcasing "new" music, although new here was interpreted quite liberally, with songs from the past 10 years, as well as some consider new when Liam was breaking in.
Liam mentioned this was the first time he'd sung in over a year. He'd had an operation on his vocal chords a few months ago. Alas, his voice cracked a few times at the end of songs and you could tell he was frustrated about it. Hopefully this will improve. He did a good job of discussing his song choices with the audience and he had lots of friends and family in (even if his dad heckled a bit).
He mentioned that he now has a day job as a telephone insurance salesman. Jonny Purchase, who works at the same insurance company, was one of the guests and sung very well. Bronté Barbé also sang and was excellent as you'd expect.
For the concert series as a whole, these are short shows without an interval (Liam was on stage for about an hour), the only downside is seating is unallocated so you really want to be there half an hour before the start if you have seating preferences. A good chance to relax and hear some new (and not-so-new) music.
Videos of a few of Liam's songs are on Twitter if anyone wants to listen (and see him looking very dapper).
