Just saw this on the NT site: Running Time: Approx 4 hours, including 2 intervals Wow. Just randomly checked a production currently running here in Germany: 2 hours 30 incl. interval. Im now so glad that when I tried to book all the front row 15 squid tickets had sold out. I've dodged a lonnnnnng bullet!

I'd be surprised if they don't lop at least half an hour off that once they get into the swing of things. Virtually nobody wants a show that long.

It's Tony Kushner - I'm not sure what y'all were expecting! If an electrical appliance suddenly bursts into song again I am outta there x

Not sure my Welkin/Visit double show day was the correct move ... Fortunately booked a Visit/Death of England double show day with the Visit in the afternoon.

It's Tony Kushner - I'm not sure what y'all were expecting! Quite. He’s so verbose, I’m surprised there’s not a The Visit Part II.

This running time is going to put a lot of people off who otherwise might have been interested, including me, which is a pity. Some other ADs would have insisted on cuts.

I am seeing THE VISIT a day after I see THE SEVEN STREAMS OF THE RIVER OTA. The 4hour running time will seem like a walk in the park :-).

Just realised I’m seeing Seven Streams the following day, suppose I will be suitably warmed up for the Sunday stint.

Just realised I’m seeing Seven Streams the following day, suppose I will be suitably warmed up for the Sunday stint. You're going to have a very sore bottom... I find the seats in both theatres at the National quite uncomfortable, even for the normal length of a play.

This running time is going to put a lot of people off Yes, it's too much for me - I had a neck injury as a kid and The Welkin from the cheap front seats was difficult.

The Visit is in the Olivier so stage height shouldn’t be an issue.

Is the stage high for that? No, it's not high (just average?) and I think front row will maybe give you more legroom to shift around too - I think you'll be OK. I was in row C but I'm only 5'5" so was also having to peer around the person sitting in front of me (the seats in those rows aren't staggered).

How long do we reckon the two promised intervals are going to be?
20/15/10/pauses?

How long to we reckon the two promised intervals are going to be? 20/15/10/pauses? They're usually 15/20 minutes at the National.

I reckon they'll get this down to 3 and 3/4 hours with two 15 minute intervals by the time it reaches press night.
Looking forward to seeing it, but got to call the Nash in the morning and change to a matinee for reasons of Tony Kushner

Just saw this on the NT site: Running Time: Approx 4 hours, including 2 intervals Wow. Just randomly checked a production currently running here in Germany: 2 hours 30 incl. interval. Absurd. I'm not sure who'll be more horrified: my 15-year-old daughter or my 85-year-old mother-in-law... As you say, two and a half hours is about right. Perhaps they're going to go over the top with the resources of the Oliver...really more of a Lyttelton play, I would have thought.

It may be stunning, but that's too much of a (possibly) good thing. I could go see up to 4 shows at the Vaults festival in the same running time!

It's Tony Kushner - I'm not sure what y'all were expecting! However it is a version of an existing play, subject (as explained up the thread) to various restrictions by the author's literary executors, which probably preclude the introduction of new characters and plot, which in its original translation apparently runs less than three hours. This raises the grim possibility that episodes of dance have been interpolated into it. I did not know that Peter Brook had directed this play in UK and USA in the late 50s.

It has a 7pm start and Kushner always gonna Kushner - not sure why people are surprised. Because it isn’t a Kushner play, it is his version of a much shorter play. Of course we are assuming the length is due to Kushner, it might not be, it might be the director - I mean Katie Mitchell made a routine version of Three Sisters run almost 4 hours.
