Alex Young as The Bakers Wife would have been wonderful. She sung 'Moments In The Woods' in one of the online concerts and honestly made me laugh out loud.

She did it at the King's of Broadway concert at the Palace in December and was delightful - she'd have been really wonderful.
Sad we won't get to see it tbh

They probably did it to make space for 4000 Miles, which, according to a recent interview of Chalamet, is still happening.

The same wording was used when Local Hero was cancelled - I wouldn't read too much in to it. My money is on 4000 Miles and Groundhog Day filling the void, as I couldn't see Groundhog Day displacing A Christmas Carol next December, much as I love both shows.
Now of course, it would be really fabulous if they were to announce Local Hero to replace Into The Woods, but it feels like that show might have bitten the dust.

Local Hero is unfortunately dead, which must be gaoling for Mark Knopfler to write a score and it not to be used, I hope that works out.
As good as Groundhog Day is, the Old Vic is a theatre for developing shows and Groundhog Day is a developed show, so they should be looking for a West End theatre for that. It was going to go into the Adelphi but Waitress got there first. The set is still in storage in Reading.
Sad that Into the Woods is not happening, would be better in the Other Palace, hello Bill Kenwright - Martin Shaw could play as the trend now a gender swapped witch!!!

Disappointed - particularly as I'd booked some rather nice tickets for the previews. I wonder what the reason for this is.

We're getting very used to shows getting cancelled now. I almost don't feel the crippling disappointment anymore.
I don't see why this can't just go into a west end receiving house, I am annoyed that it's not happening at a venue (and at a price) that I love, but I would have thought it equally viable in a mid-sized zone 1 theatre?

I was really looking forward to this, and wouldn't Alex Young have been wonderful, so this is a genuine question. Does anyone know why so many people on Twitter are being very snippy about this, and saying how happy they are it's been cancelled, and it's not before time, etc.... Has Terry Gilliam done something awful and offended everyone?

Well this is disappointing. I won't lie, I did have a sneaking suspician in the back of my mind that Gilliam's previous comments from before may cause the Old Vic to take issue. With what Baz said in his tweet, that may just be the case.

Gilliam’s statements are just shocking. As much as I’m disappointed, I don’t blame them at at if the article was the cause. Theater is about embracing everyone and his statements are frankly disgusting and mouth was aghast as I was reading it.

No sorry, BS to that, that article is nearly two years old. They've had plenty of time to know what he was like and whether to work with hjm. If they were concerned about his personal feelings on topics they shouldn't have got this far down the line with it. If they thought they could change his mind then they were pretty dumb/naive.
It's a shame as it's (on paper at least) a great match of director and show.

This production will never happen now, anywhere. Those statements he made will be dragged up wherever this show surfaces and it will become toxic.
Weak of the Old Vic not to just pull this as soon as he came out with that rubbish.

That's the way it is nowadays: a few people are offended and make a fuss about it, a venue gets cold feet and cancels and nobody gets a potentially great production. Sad. Well, my money goes elsewhere then.  |

It would have been stronger of them to go ahead with a different director. Given that tickets had been sold there’s presumably an audience, I doubt many people would have been affronted but it not being Gilliam at the helm. And how many people decided to see it based on his name? Not many I would venture.

The Old Vic doesn't have the West End rights for Into the Woods - they are held by Scenario Two productions who was the co-producer. Scenario Two is run by John Berry the former Artistic Director at ENO. He commissioned Gilliam to make his operatic directorial debut with The Damnation of Faust and then Benvenuto Cellini, and says that they were amongst the greatest successes of his time at ENO.
So I'm guessing that they took Into the Woods to the Old Vic with Gilliam already attached to it, the Old Vic now seemingly doesn't want to work with Gilliam and Scenario Two is trying to find another venue for the production.
