Wow, I am quite surprised to hear the negativity about the speech. She clearly spoke on behalf of the company but meant what she said or had to say - I was sitting in the front row of the stalls and she had tears in her eyes when they walked off stage. Nobody was forced to applaud after it but everyone did. Otherwise the production and her performance is fantastic, especially in Act 2 - I was with a group of friends and we will be back day seating again. You're only saying that because you agree with her. If someone had stepped forward and congratulated Trump you'd have been outraged. Also, what is the point of her moaning to a UK audience ? We didn't vote for him. Yeah tough isn't it deciding if you believe in equal rights for women.

I'm a bit confused. The actress playing Hedda found it necessary to make a speech about women's rights when she had just played one of the most powerful parts in the canon on the theme of women's place in society? Did she think she had to annotate her performance? Did she think she could put the case better than Ibsen? Or stimulate discussion better than he has done? So are we to expect actors to give us their own speeches after other productions? 'So chaps, make your minds up and don't let your uncles marry your mothers' ? I don't mind being asked for dosh when they collect for charity with the buckets or for a particular disaster but if I choose to contemplate a play let it be the play that makes me think. I'm not saying actors shouldn't speak but should choose their platforms and not speak from a stage just because they can and we are all too polite to object. As for the applause, well, you know as well as I do that applause accompanies anything on a stage including moving furniture.

Can other forum members be blocked? Does Parsley know where the theatre board bodies are buried or something? Why is he tolerated?

Yes you can block people. Click on someone's name and it takes you to the summary page of their profile. There's a block button on the far right of the page, appropriately enough.

As for the applause, well, you know as well as I do that applause accompanies anything on a stage including moving furniture. As usual your post is very eloquent Lynette And I agree with you 100% on your points I don't really like the bucket collection as there are many better and more modern ways to gather monies What is particularly silly about this case is the need for an actor to speak out against someone Donald Trump isn't going to be removed from power And it's a very negative attitude before he has even started his presidency Furthermore as another goodly poster observed Had she stepped forth and clapped and done a dance to celebrate his inauguration What reaction then? It's also very assumptive and patronising to impose a certain view on an audience paying for entertainment To be force fed a political view is not very elegant or dignified Were the views she expressed those of the NT as a whole? As they allowed her to speak in their space and stage If so then this is risky and foolish and insulting to many others What I do know is that most theatres have their gobs wide open asking for money most of the time They don't bother to ask the political views of the party donating before taking the cash As hypocritical as politicians themselves 😂😂 That sort of behaviour Is just as bad as the people being opposed And fuels conflict and results in "sides" We have plenty to worry about already without making internal conflict

I rarely agree with him but I enjoy being provoked by his posts, he is often witty and always a stimulating read. He obviously cares about the theatre and he's right about actors making speeches at the end of plays.

I doubt anyone will find a theatre speaking up for Trump considering his views on arts and values that are generally represented in the theatre community.

I bet they would quickly take money from him Silently If it was offered The ethics and work practices of many theatres leaves much to be desired She didn't need to say anything We can predict her views Did she tell everyone what she ate for lunch or how many times she went to the toilet? Judge Brack should have stuffed a can of tomatoes in her mouth to silence her 😂😂

It is quite difficult to judge without knowing what Ruth Wilson actually said (although everybody here seems to know that without even being present…). I reckon from what others have written that it may have been a plea for women rights and against a worrying tendency to minimize misogynist declarations. Is it so traumatic to listen to that for five minutes? Anybody is entitled to his/her opinion about the march and Trump but I am sure nobody was held captive. Sincerely I don't remember all this outrage when the actors of "The pride" ended the show with placards with the words "To Russia With Love" (that was great in my opinion). Wasn't that political?

"Communist desire to censor and block"?? How do you come up with these expressions? Following your logic, it looks like you are having a Ruth Wilson's moment and being political in the wrong place :-) Although I agree with what seems to have been the content of Ruth Wilson's speech, it might have not been the place to make it. Probably she and others in the company felt strongly about what was happening in Washington. It does not change politics, especially what already happened in the US, but does it really harm anyone to be reminded of women's rights? And since this is a blog on Hedda Gabler, I agree with others bloggers that this production gave a rather sympathetic presentation of Hedda. I could relate with her more than in other productions. It is surely not everyone's cup of tea though.

I was there last night. Ruth's speech was not self-indulgent or inappropriate. People need to get over themselves.
The show was so-so, but I've come to expect this from the National. Sometimes, they really get it right, but most of the time their productions sit somewhere in the middle. Ruth & Rafe, I liked.

Apologies if I offended you parsley - I find your writing style incredibly tedious and often you give rather absurd points that are irrelevant to topics - with these views often going unchallenged. First of all a constant moan about Angels in America blocking up that thread and then being extremely rude, unhelpful and ridiculous that people shouldn't be buying tickets because they need to keep their money to pay for healthcare due to the imminent collapse of the NHS? What planet are you living on?! And now, despite not being there to hear Ruth Wilson's speech, jumping to all sorts of bizarre conclusions of how she forced her politics down the throats of the audience? Not unusual for the arts community, by nature extremely liberal, to be supportive of women's rights; Sir Ian, Dame Helen and Gillian Anderson all on the march yesterday. You do often seem to be peddling the Daily Mail agenda which - despite how much we like Baz - isn't the attitude that many people on this board, I suspect, share.

Legitimate protest for a cause is not undermining the outcome of a democratic vote and can not be compared to hacking and selectively releasing information. This new idea that once an election is won any peaceful protest or dissent is treasonous is very disturbing.

Was she?? Goodness, she's better than I thought! I thought she was just making a speech (appropriate or otherwise depending on your point of view) about support for the march going on in the US to highlight the defence of women's rights. To be honest, I'm not sure why people are getting their knickers in a twist over it. I say good for her for saying it (the well documented views on women by the leader of the most powerful country in the world should be challenged for my money), but I also support the right of the audience to walk out while she was speaking if they didn't agree with what she was saying. But back to the play. Stapling those flowers to the wall every night eh? She's lucky. I can never get my stapler to work.

Re Stapled Flowers: my friend's point of view about the play: 'It's a study of depresssion set in an art gallery. That's why there are so many bare walls, the odd use of flowers, the performance art at the end.' There - a potential PhD thesis.
