This will again ignite the debate about lack of investment in theatre infrastructure in the West End. Considering the amount ATG charge for rent and contra at their venues, this will surely be a talking point.

Yellow wet floor signs were in the bar and auditorium before the start If there was a leak problem they shouldn't have opened.

First Curious Incident. Now Death of a Salesman? Remind me to pack a hardhat next time I go and see a Marianne Elliott show. She’s taking immersive theatre to new heights. Hope everyone is okay, I was trying to remember what the other show was where similar thing happened so thanks for reminding us. The HSE will likely be involved, it's now run by the previous boss of my company, she'll be right on the case.

It may have been a lot less serious than at the Apollo where the amount of debris and the height fallen appear to have both been more significant but it is not acceptable that you should have to worry about the integrity of a West End Theatre given the economics of the industry these days. It certainly doesn’t look good for ATG that there were signs out indicating they were aware of a leak. Though obviously there is a chance that may be unrelated to the one in the ceiling. Not on the same scale perhaps but add to the mix the issues with the roof at The Southwark Playhouse in recent months.

Just want to stress that I, of course, hope action is taken upon the incident and doesn’t blow over.

Some media outlets have reported it as the roof collapsing which is incorrect as a roof collapsing would have been a whole lot worse

It really is very shocking. The grand circle was OPEN at the Piccadilly?!
Not clever. Not funny.
I thought it was funny. Nobody died or was even seriously hurt, Jesus wept. People need to chill. It was some plasterboard?! What's more worrying is that it actually happened. Laziness from ATG.

Humour is a very subjective and personal thing. Is it not possible to have different opinions without having to resort to insults?
Very pleased that people have not been seriously hurt in this incident, but clearly very frightening for those involved at the time.

Quite a few shows were cancelled recently due to leaks when there was heavy rain.

Can we also spare a moment for the cast of DOAS.. how awful for them too , to be on stage and this commotion happens in the house.
I really hope that this gets investigated and resolved soon rather than the theatre being closed for a period like the Apollo, and ending their shows run so prematurely.

This probably isn't the same kind of situation but I lived in a Victorian-era mansion block flat when the living room ceiling fell down one night without warning. The plaster wasn't particularly heavy. Whole floor was covered in horse hair!

The plaster wasn't particularly heavy. Whole floor was covered in horse hair! Same in our mid-Victorian student house - the ceiling fell down in the room next to mine - luckily the girl was out, but she was a music student and it wrecked her stuff. A few days later the whole ceiling in my room fell down, destroying most of my stuff too. Had either of been in we would have been seriously injured or worse. Victorian theatres are beautiful but they scare me. Today, there's 100mm of rain predicted in Manchester. 2 weeks ago all the West Coast mainline trains were cancelled due to flooding - unprecedented in our train driver's 25 year career. Without massive investment - which is unlikely - I don't think these already creaky Victorian buildings are going to stand up to our changing climate.

In domestic situations it is usually clogged guttering with a build up Years even and the water has to go somewhere. But a public building should be checked regularly. V poor maintenance despite heavy rainfall.

I was tempted to post a joke about it when I read it but refrained from as people could have been injured.

Bit scary isn't it, and nobody wants to be worrying about their safety whilst watching a show.
But...just my two cents re some reactions above...we Brits are famous for our stoicism and our sense of humour. Laughter is the best medicine. I hardly think that making light-hearted jokes about plasterboard falling in over the Grand Circle at an ATG venue is in poor taste. I welcome it!

I don't know what's more amusing: grand circle quips or the fact that most people joking weren't in the building.

Although it's not on the scale as the Apollo incident, you have to wonder if the producers of the Piccadilly's next two shows are having second thoughts especially Moulin Rouge.

Hearing that Friday's and Saturday's shows are being performed with pared down set and costume. Anyone know why this is?
And does the Piccadilly have a ceiling that naturally lowers to make it a 2 tier theatre?

A ceiling that lowers sounds a bit high tech even for our engineering great Victorian forefathers.
