He's only slightly older than Tommy Korberg was when he played the role in Stockholm. His age needn't be an issue. Just not sure about Alexandra Burke. Does her name even draw a crowd? I just hope she sings the score as written rather than making it sound like a vocal exercise. Sister Act was one of the top selling tours in 2017 according to Jamie Wilson productions (though it got a mixed reception here) and apparently her stint in the Bodyguard brought in a lot of cash too. Surely they won't tamper with the score given that she'll be duet-ing with Cassidy?

Anyone tried for a refund yet? No but I have got this in the post from them this morning... They’re sending them out in batches apparently, according to when we booked, so we won’t all get them at the same time.

Announcement I think will be tomorrow - Baz is likely to announce it tonight and then ENO confirm in the morning...

Gosh their announcement will be so anticlimactic.
Poorly cast, poorly executed.

To vote for theatremonkey joining the writing team, dial 0990 841 00 Sorry Monkey. You're too much of a rookie writer for my vote.

Why? It's not as if it is writing pawn? Indeed, maybe not. But it would be like taking a sideways step before we can move forwards.

Still, the good news is that it is all going to the vote, and I may hired to revise the book a little and add some humour! New lines could include: "Why did the chess player go into a bank? To see his cheque, mate." "What's black and white and black and white and black and white? A chess board rolling down a hill." "Why was the chess player tired? He'd had a bad knight." To vote for Michael Ball joining the cast, dial 0990 841 002 To vote for theatremonkey joining the writing team, dial 0990 841 003 Please dial carefully, and remember that your vote will not count, but you may be charged if you dial after lines close. Always ask the bill-payer's permission. Good luck everyone. I’ve tried calling one of those numbers on and of all day (I can’t say what one for obvieous reasons) but it keeps saying, “Thankyou for calling the ENO Chess vote. You have voted for theatremonkey to join the writing team.” Each time I call, it says thesame thing, which is odd because I was actually voting for Micheal Ball. So I tried the other number, thinking you might of listed the numbers wrong, but it says exactley the same thing. I must of tried voteing about litrally 20 times. Could you check the numbers for us so that the vote counts. Thank you.

I think it must be true about Michael Ball as just had an email from his fanclub about the rumour & giving a link for tickets since they are already on sale.
It doesn't say either way does it, but why would you give a link to the website if it wasn't a definite?

The Washington DC production's new book sounds interesting with some unexpected plot twists, and a restructured first act. I wonder if ENO will take similar risks?

If the rumoured casting is correct then I'm torn because I'd want to see Cassidy Janson but not any of the others. If only she could give a special one-woman Chess performance!

I've booked a £15 gallery seat. It will be great to hear the score played by a full orchestra. The casting has not tempted me to pay any more.

Murray Head is the only one that would tempt me to book. I’m a sucker for seeing an originator of a role.

Such melodrama in here - if you don't like the casting, you don't have to go (and if you booked tickets before the casting was announced then that was the risk you chose to take!)
Personally I hope Alexandra Burke smashes it and proves you all wrong. At least she can sing, and so can Cassidy Janson.
I thought Ball wasn't brilliant in Sweeney Todd, but c'est la vie, can't always be brilliant casting.

I mean, I did hear they were trying to get Idina for ages. And I heard it from 3 different people. But, who knows?

Murray Head is the only one that would tempt me to book. I’m a sucker for seeing an originator of a role. I saw Murray Head do a Q&A at the BFI last year for the film “Sunday Bloody Sunday”. It was a very interesting and entertaining Q&A, but Murray did seem to wander off topic quite a bit. I’m sure he’ll be more focused onstage, but my first thought on hearing this was that he was probably too old for the role.

Casting confirmed. Sigh... Glad I waited. Saved a few hundred quid it would have cost on a trip to see it.
