I’d be interested in seeing this - I know ‘His Strongest Suit’ because they Spice Girls recorded it (which was only the 3rd song they had released without Ginger at that point).

I don't think the book is bad. The plot is coherent and makes sense from what I remember. I said thankless, not bad. Not much happens, and anything ‘dramatic’ is more romantic drama than ‘drama’ drama. It doesn’t matter because the songs are so good.

It doesn’t matter because the songs are so good. I'm not so sure about that. A good musical needs a great book and Aida's was basic and cliched. I thought it was all a bit obvious. Maybe because it seemed aimed at a younger audience, as it was produced by Disney. Hopefully they will have a chance to look at the book before a new production. Which should give them plenty of time.

It doesn’t matter because the songs are so good. 'Another Pyramid'? 'Like Father, Like Son'? GOOD?

GOOD? ...some of 😂😂😂😂 I’d sit through them for ‘Not Me’, ‘A Step Too Far’, ‘Fortune Favours the Brave’, ‘My Strongest Suit’, ‘Dance of the Robe’, ‘Elaborate Lives’, ‘The Gods Love Nubia’...THE GODS LOVE NUBIA! Would be worth the ticket price alone.

For this unfamiliar with the song, or indeed its staging, here is a (partial) clip of My Strongest Suit from AIDA on Broadway

The show, I'm afraid - I saw the tour in Toronto years ago - is a turd.

It’s BEYOND me also why this never ran on the West End / it ran on broadway for FIVE YEARS. I met a disney exec once and it was timing with Mary Poppins and running costs. In short. Money.

Maybe the lack of a West End Aida is why people over here barely remember that Elton John is a musical theatre composer (based on the many ‘But why is Rocketman a musical?!’ conversations I had last year) though The Lion King has been running continuously for 20 years! And Billy Elliot did 10 years in the West End.
If the pandemic had not upended everything and Aida had gone to the West End next year, that would have been 3 musicals composed by Elton John running in London, with the new Tammy Faye one, and 2 on Broadway, with the new Devil Wears Prada. For a little while at least, even if they didn’t all manage to stay open for long.

Was listening to the Elton John demo recordings this morning. I know there was the “all star” album, but Elton’s own recordings make a very good album on their own (I especially love the over acted spoken lines).

I love the score for this but overall it’s not a great musical. The original design was fabulous though. Cannot believe we still haven’t had any production of it though.

I remember when I go back to Australia (I wasn't living here at the time) I have to do a special order and when I received a phone call to collect it, all of the woman who worked in the store stood around and looked at it and (not knowing anything about the show) couldn't believe how beautiful it was.

Rumours circulating again about a London run. It’s due to open in Holland next year and a possible London run after that.

The upcoming Dutch tour will be a new production directed by Schele Williams, who was in the original Broadway production of Aida. The casting call specifically asked for people of colour from all cultural backgrounds, so I'm not sure if we'll be seeing a blonde Amneris in this updated version of the show.

Will this lose the effect of showing the distinction between the Nubians and the Egyptians if it all ends up being cast as a free-for-all, or will they still try and ensure the Nubians are played by black actors. And perhaps this time have the Egyptians played by South Asian/Eurasian actors?

Casting call includes Aida’s mother who wasn’t present in the original production so looks like there’s some interesting changes being made to the book
