You be careful, BurlyBeaR . We don't want you crossing to the dark side! I worked in Leeds for 6 years. I think it’s fair to say that South and West Yorkshire butted heads during this period. Nuff said.

Booked. Big thank you to fossil for pointing out different availabilities on Leeds Playhouse and Opera North websites. I booked with LS as it had better availability on the day I wanted. I have Assassins, Sunday and this to look forward to - Happy Birthday Steve!

Just wondered why there are two different performers listed for each role on the website (except for the principals, where only one performer is listed). It’s not as if one is listed as the understudy; it’s just two performers listed as the same role. Does anyone know why?

My initial thought was the vocal demands of the role but as they are all opera singers I suspect not. The lieder singers are all cast from the ON chorus so my money is now on 'giving everyone a go'

I’ve just booked for a sat matinee. Simple 1hr journey from Manc. Expanding my Sondheim repertoire. I’ll probably hate it at first hearing then think about it for ages after. That’s how it’s worked out with my limited exposure so far. Which Saturday? I booked for the 16th May matinee.

Without wanting this thread to morph into one about either train travel or The Marriage of Figaro, may I please ask, Dawnstar, when you have booked to see the latter? I now have the weekend engineering dates for February.

I now have the weekend engineering dates for February. 8th February. Train tickets aren't available for then yet though, are they? At least, when I look on the National Rail website I'm only getting dates up to mid-January.

Well, it's good news then. 8 February isn't one of the dates when King's Cross is fully closed. (I know you aren't travelling from King's Cross, but you can't close a major London terminus without there being disruption elsewhere along the line.)
There is, however, a partial closure of King's Cross on 8, 9, 15, 16 February, with LNER advising "there will be a reduced train service."
Not ideal, but much better than it could have been!

I intend to pick up a Kings Cross train at Stevenage. Though whether I'll be able to get on one with a reduced service is another matter.

8th February. Train tickets aren't available for then yet though, are they? Sorry Mods, but I'm hijacking the thread again with important train information! If you still need to book your train tickets, Dawnstar, then they are finally "Due to be released Tuesday 14 January."

One is extortionate, the other a bargain. I don't think any other country has such extremes of pricing. It suits me as I know the ticketing system inside out and always buy cheapest but it isn't really fair.

Agreed that it is not fair, although for Saturdays they do sell Super Off-Peak Singles for £52.50. Note the LNER web site lets you set up an "Early Bird Ticket Alert". I have set this up for my trip to see the show on 15th May. There is also an alert set up available at www.thetrainline.com/ticketalert although I have found this to be not always reliable for weekend journeys.

After repeated checking to no avail I lost patience & tweeted LNER last week & was given Tuesday for the release date. I really hope the prices are worth waiting for or I won't be going, as I can't justify spending £90 on train tickets for a day trip.

If you can't get your train tickets at a price you're happy with send me a private message and I might be able to suggest a way to get there by train with a slightly longer journey time for a lower cost. At the moment Kings Cross to Leeds on 8 February costs from £23.30 out and £17.80 back but unfortunately that train doesn't stop at Stevenage or Peterborough. Hopefully there will be similar prices from/to your local station at suitable times tomorrow. Because weekend advance tickets are often put on sale well after weekday ones the lowest price ones sometimes don't appear at all.

The cheapest Kings Cross-Leeds tickets I can see for 8th February on the National Rail website at the moment are £58.35 each way, while on the LNER website it's telling me there currently aren't any tickets available on that date at all. Are you looking somewhere else?

I was assuming the matinee started at 2.30pm but I understand it's actually 4.00pm so my schedule won't work for the return journey. It was Kings Cross - Doncaster depart 9.42, arrive 11.25 £19.50, Doncaster to Leeds depart 12.26 arrive 13.11 £3.80. Total assuming no railcard £23.30. Return was Leeds to Doncaster depart 18.22 arrive 19.07 £3.80, Doncaster - Kings Cross depart 19.28 arrive 21.23 £14.00. Total £17.80. Overall total £41.10. All advance fares.
Sometimes to get the lowest fares you have to avoid the main operator and buy two separate tickets. Neither Hull Trains nor Northern Rail is the most reliable train operating company so using LNER is a much better option if cost permits.
(For a 4.00pm curtain up it works to leave Kings Cross at 10.43 (and that actually costs £4.30 less to Doncaster but unfortunately there's no cheap train back to Kings Cross after the 19.28.)

FrontrowverPaul Yes, not sure why it's 4pm rather than a more usual matinee start time but it is. I've just tried to book & the National Rail website now has advance fares listed but when it re-directed me to LNER that website then said "fare not found". This is awfully frustrating!

I mostly use Southeastern Trains to buy tickets as they offer free delivery. The advance fares to Leeds for 8 February are now on their website. If you are on Quidco, Chiltern Railways has the same fares and can save a few more pence but I think they charge a delivery fee. I usually collect from a station anyway.
Only use the National Rail website to get information, then google the train operating company you want to buy your tickets from. It doesn't need to be the company you are travelling with. They all sell the same tickets but they DON'T necessarily all have the same cheapest fares available. I don't know why that is but I've encountered it before. Don't let NRE direct you to LNER !
As you have said the cheap advance fares for 8 February are not currently available on the LNER website. National Rail Enquiries website refers you there. Most people would look there first. You want to travel on their trains. Yet they are only offering much higher fares at present. A textbook example of what a minefield getting rail travel at the best price can be and it really shouldn't be like that.

I've looked at Southeaster Trains & they have the cheapest tickets available for the out journey (£13.90 on the 12.20 from Cambridge) but for the return train I want (19.45 from Leeds) the cheapest ticket they're showing is £88.60 whereas the National Rail website is giving £52.20 (off peak rather than advance). It's hopeless. Where do you get the 4pm matinee time from? I've just looked on the opera north site and it says 2pm. My e-ticket says 2pm and I booked that in October. The current conversation between myself & FrontrowverPaul isn't about trying to get to A Little Night Music. It's about trying to get to another Opera North production, Le Nozze di Figaro, that's on in Leeds in February.
