Emma Rice's next project.
(Posting in Plays, as reads more like a play with music, rather than a 'traditional' musical.)

Not gonna lie, I was a DEVOTED Malory Towers reader as a child (and adult), and I do admire Emma Rice an awful lot, so they'd have to do something really wacky with the scheduling to keep me away from this one.

Malory Towers on stage - I'm there, already emailed my mate with my availability so we can get to this. Just hope there's not too much animation as it's one thing I really dislike but I'll try to block it out of my vision to see this on stage

I'm RIGHT THERE for Malory Towers on stage. Oh my word. With Audrey Fleurot playing Mam'zelle please.

I mean, I think they all ultimately *learned* to be kind, but even Mary Lou had her moments!

This is being marketed as a musical rather than a play so I'm booking to see it at Bristol. Unreserved seating unfortunately as I always prefer to book a front row seat when I can.

Where is the love for Malory Towers? Not one thread!
I saw it this afternoon and really enjoyed it. Much better than I expected. The messages were a little bit obvious and cliched, but it was very enjoyable, the staging was really inventive, and the cast were excellent. I especially liked the blend of their voices in the songs where Bill was part of it.

Bill?! The only Bill I remember was in the Adventure Series.
I'm going to try and catch this as I adored these books.

Good luck getting a ticket! There's one left for Oxford but that's all I can see. I want to see it again NOW.
Bill was the horsey tomboy one. The Honorable Wilhelmina, with 7 brothers. (Bill Smuggs in the Adventure books was ace! I mean, dodgy as hell, taking up with a widow with 4 prepubescent kids who he takes off on jolly secret adventures at the drop of a hat, but still, lots of fun!)

I saw Malory Towers in the Passenger Shed at Bristol on a baking hot day in late July and I thought they captured the spirit of the books well, yet with a modern twist
My enjoyment was reduced when the portable air conditioning machines were turned off as it started. They were undeniably a bit noisy but without them the auditorium - not designed for musical theatre - was very uncomfortable.
Will hopefully follow Wise Children into the London Old Vic. I'd definitely try to see it again.

She arrived at the school on horseback ☺

They arrived on horseback in this too! Lots of hoofbeats suddenly, and the little girl behind me gasped really loudly and went *BILL! Is it Bill coming?* She was so excited, bless her!

There is a thread in plays..not sure which I'd stick with as there is quite a bit of music and it's not completely incidental. I saw this earlier in the week and enjoyed it "in a not what I expected way", as a friend said. The adaptation draws on the book characters (pupils only, save for a silhouette or two) but certainly doesn't go page by page! Lots of energy and fun, more tongue in cheek in the second half I thought. Some interesting reflections on why people became as they are, but nothing too heavy. I saw ages 8 to 80 enjoying it.

Now I don't know where to post! Though I'm wary of Emma Rice's work and hadn't read the books (I read the other boarding school series by Enid Blyton; can't remember the name of that school but I also felt slighted on behalf of that series that it had lost out to this one), the really enthusiastic reviews from early tour venues persuaded me to book.
So I'm seeing a matinee in Oxford but there was plenty of availability when I booked so I'm surprised, though pleased, to see @elanor's suggestion that it's now selling out.

Never seem to be mentioned as much- maybe I need to dig out a copy!

I thoroughly enjoyed this one too - although the number of little girls proclaiming that 'Bill wasn't an honourable, that was Clarissa' had me in fits of laughter. Messing with the characters might be accepted by adults but the kids were quite indignant!

Well! I thought I remembered posting ages ago, but I did a search yesterday and that other one never turned up!
Maybe it's not sold out midweek - thinking about it, I was only looking at Saturdays, because I can't get to the tour venues on a weekday.

The posted on the Wise Children website says "Malory Towers - A Musical" so I think that settles that one! Don't think it was originally advertised this way though. www.wisechildren.co.uk/productions/malory-towers/about-theg-show

Will hopefully follow Wise Children into the London Old Vic. I'd definitely try to see it again. Please please! 🤞🤞Desperate to see this as I absolutely loved the books as a child but there is absolutely no chance of me getting to see this on tour! After reading this discussion I might have to get the books on my kindle for some holiday reading!

I'm not sure I'd hold out too much hope for an Old Vic run, at least in the short term. The current tour ends in early October, and I think the earliest slot at the OV is in early April, after Endgame, by which time the cast will have dispersed and the momentum lost.
Wise Children will be shown in cinemas soon, so maybe this will too, in due course.
Or if it's commercial enough, perhaps it will go into London's glittering West End.

Could go to the unexpectedly vacant Troubadour White City perhaps.
