Currently looking through the brochure for this years festival, I’m generally more impressed by this years lineup than last years, which I generally thought was a bit lacklustre. I won’t be in London for the closing weekend (I’m going to Paris to see New Order) so I won’t get to see The Irishman (although I think tickets for that will be next to impossible for the average Joe to nab) or Le Mans ‘66 but I’m hoping to nab tickets for some of the following:
Knives Out Marriage Story Greed Guest Of Honour Color Out Of Space
There’s a few films that I’m sitting on the fence about getting tickets for, like The Two Popes and Leap Of Faith, but generally there’s a lot that catches the eye.

A Beautiful Day in the Neighbourhood, Knives Out and JoJo Rabbit. Le Mans 66 looks interesting.
I'm surprised Just Mercy and Motherless Brooklyn aren't being shown at the LFF but I wouldn't be shocked if one of them are the surprise film, the other possibility is The Good Liar.

Think surprise film is How to Build a Girl as it’s normally a crowdpleaser and frankly bizarre that this film isn’t in the programme.
Apart from that, looking forward to aforementioned Knives Out and The Irishman, plus Marriage Story, The Report, The Two Popes and Ordinary Love.

Yes - I’m piqued by it being Richard Stanley’s first film in God knows how long (I enjoyed Mandy but Nicolas Cage has done nothing of any note in recent years)

We’ve managed to only pick 11 out this year by not picking anything due to go to Netflix or likely to get a wide release in the couple of months following the festival. We’ve learnt over the years that cramming too many films into those two weeks means you enjoy them less and then have nothing much to see in November and December.
We might even get the odd evening off!

Does anyone have experience with public booking and availability? I used to be able to book with the early booking Amex offer but that’s no longer an option.
Not really keen to pay for membership either.

I'm with kathryn in that we started with 24 in our long list and have got down to 14 - the galas are just so expensive now and it's not worth it to get a glimpse of a star when you can see the film a couple of months later at a regular price. So I'm mostly doing queer cinema that might not get UK releases, minor UK films that might not make it to the big screen, and a handful of stuff from directors I've liked before and am keen to see their new stuff.

Reading all of this with interest - and taking notes.
A couple of the documentaries look good,as does Greed and possibly The King.
As some of the big films/galas are impossible to get or very ££, any of the first films or smaller, quirkier things of particular interest?

Well at least the website is working, but how can ALL of the stalls tickets for the gala screenings be gone within seconds of them going on sale? Surely the BFI can’t give all the tickets to their sponsors?
Have got tickets for Jojo Rabbit (albeit at the back of the upper circle), Guest Of Honour and Colour Out Of Space, not paying £30 a ticket for leftovers in the other films I wanted to see.

Yes, terrible availability. I decided not to go for rear Upper Circle for The King, so skipped that. Got okay seats for Gala of Bad Education and, well, that's all for now. The COLOUR OUT OF SPACE performance I wanted was totally sold out.

They release tickets in tranches - so they won't have ALL gone on sale. Some will have been held for Amex presale and some for public booking. But saying that, the capacity in OLS has reduced by half after their refurb, so there will be fewer seats on sale to start with.

The BFI members who actually pay a yearly fee and buy the vast bulk of tickets for the stuff they screen for the rest of the year should be treated better than this, not just thrown crumbs from the table to fill up the seats - if I get the same sort of seats on offer next year, I will be severely tempted to tell the BFI they can stick their festival up thrir arse and cancel my subscription.

I read on Twitter that Gala tickets for Odeon Leicester Square were 75% gone even when tickets opened for patrons (who pay over £1000 a year). Those tickets seem to have mostly gone to industry people.
It's a real shame that the capacity has been halved. I expect them to try to recreate that experience at the Embankment galas, especially as the prices are similar, but that cinema can be an absolute pain with the packed lobby, and feeling the ground move everytime someone goes to the toilet. None worse than last year's screening for If Beale Street Could Talk where the film was constantly interrupted by the helicopters overhead for the Brexit march.

I ended up booking two more things - the documentary about Merce Cunningham and a French film with a good cast. La Belle Epoque.
I agree with artist (Welcome to the board!) about the Embankment Gardens. I've tried them a few times and it's always disappointing. Twice they were very late letting us in while the foyer got more and more crowded, and people were getting very unhappy. And there is no atmosphere at all.

I haven't been for 8 years or so.
I avoided the galas for price reasons to be honest. I have a student card, so 10 pound tickets for the repeat screenings are fine for me.

This takes me back. I used to frequent this in the late 90’s; normally just genre stuff being shown early but it felt quite special. Stuff would always start late where they had just received the film (actual film...played on a projector!) and it needed spooling on. So jealous 😊

I sent a message to the BFI asking why all the tickets had gone the second members booking went live and they said it was because Champions booking went live the day before - I’m calling shenanigans on that, I don’t know how many people have upped to Champion level since last year but I’m still getting the funky scent of free sponsors tickets wafting across this whole sorry affair.

Like with adding NT Membership presale to your basket to look at seats for shows not yet on general sale, is there a way for non-members to have a look at seating availability prior to public booking opening?

It's really irritating that there is no Amex presale this year - given they bankroll the Festival you'd think that would be the least they could offer...!
I expect the public booking scrum will be horrendous on Thurs, but all the Galas I wanted to go to are already confirmed for UK cinema release or Netflix so I don't really see the point. Might try for a couple of weekend encore screenings but other than that I don't think I'll be bothering this year.

Yes, always useful when they only send you the email after the presale has started! Painless booking though - got my weekend encore screenings for David Copperfield and Greed just because I have free weekends and might as well, and one of the screenings of Mr Jones, which I was surprised but pleased to see was almost sold out. Decided to go for the Aeronauts gala in the end as I couldn't get Knives Out and I do like Redmayne and Jones - so I ended up getting caught up in the hype after all!
