Two days on,two days off was the filming schedule. 10 episodes over 38 days then plus the pre-filmimg isolation. 47 days in total so 7 weeks sounds right. Pretty intense and not a lot of time to rehearse your bakes So we know one finalist, right? I thought I heard her say "so I could be away from my husband for 7 weeks". I didn't think she was saying she already had been.

I am expecting a lower standard of baking this year - they really don't have much time to prepare for each episode given that they only have 2 days in between (and I am guessing only limited access to kitchen facilities - certainly not their home kitchens and equipment) It is inevitable that we will get less polished work - certainly in terms of design/finish. And very possibly in technique as well - as they just won't have time to perfect things I was not impressed by their cake construction skills. Knowing how to stack cakes safely is not a difficult skill to acquire - and certainly something they should have thought about considering they know what week 1 involved. I don't know. As it is usually shot on weekends with people doing their normal jobs in the week, they may actually have more practise time, possibly even in the tent with the same ovens etc. Have to see how we go.

I enjoyed the first episode more than I thought I would. The bust bake designed for hilarity. More emphasis on the taste would be good.

I'm confused! We read that the contestants had 2 days on and 2 days off so that means that they would practise the next challenges on their 2 days off. Tonight for the showcase challenge they were given 4 hours. When one of the contestants was asked if they had practised they said yes about 15 times. So 15 x 4 hours is 60 hours. Now I only have O level maths but 2 days is 48 hours, so even if they practised without sleeping and eating for 2 days they could not have practised anywhere near 15 times. So something doesn't add up.

They had 9 days in the bubble before filming started so there was probably kitchen time during that.
Also you have to provide your recipes in advance of filming so you would test them before you commit to them

Another good episode. Rowan, perhaps correctly saved, as this years best contestant.
I have calculated if he has seven or eight weeks in the tent that will be enough to become a national treasure

When one of the contestants was asked if they had practised they said yes about 15 times. Could they have been given those challenges before filming started, when they were still at home?

Yes that makes sense with the early stages of the competition. I guess as we get further into the rounds and the semi and final they would have been in the bubble so less time to prepare and practise.

In a regular year, you have to submit your recipes for the first half of the season before filming starts and the rest have to follow shortly after. I suspect this year they had to submit everything in advance.

I have a stupid question about Florentines... the ones I've seen in America don't have toppings/fillings, but are basically just the crispy bit (nuts, sugar, butter... no dried fruits), drizzled or backed with chocolate. Is it traditional in the UK to make them as they did on the show?

M&S do lovely ones at Christmas and for an extra special treat Fortnum & Masons. Unfortunately, I don't like candied peel or most dried fruit, so those wouldn't be for me. Hot cross buns are off the table for me, as well, even my Cornish gran's. On the other hand, mince pies (especially the individual ones) are a holiday treat I love!

What about Cornish Saffron cake? Is saffron cake the same as saffron buns? If so, yes, please!

I suspect this year they had to submit everything in advance. Yes, I've read that too. I think there's an expectation that you submit at least some of your plans during the selection process. Hence me thinking Paul was being a bit mean by complaining that Rowan hadn't taken his advice on simplifying his recipes. I'm sure that's still an option, but if they only have a couple of days between filming, there's not that much scope for change. Didn't the baker who practised 15 times say she was adjusting the recipe during that time, which definitely needs to be done in advance to they can buy you the required ingredients.

I know it was bread week but Prue was barely allowed to get two words out this week. Now that's funny because I thought even still Prue was allowed to say more than normal in bread week

Bit underwhelmed this week. It didn't quite rise to the occasion. And a twist is not a plait...

I know it was bread week but Prue was barely allowed to get two words out this week. When she did speak she did it with a mouthful of bread. Very distracting.

Bit underwhelmed this week. It didn't quite rise to the occasion. And a twist is not a plait... It was Rowan. We all knew there was a tv personality there but, well... his baking wasn't up to it and he shouldn't have made week 3. I wasn't as distraught as I thought I would be. Some clever editing helped us all to be let down gently.

I know it was bread week but Prue was barely allowed to get two words out this week. Doesn’t she sound like she’s losing her voice? She’s spoken less this series and I think it’s because of this.
