Looks like theyve taken to doing publicity shots in the street outside the theatre. Hello Manchester REX 🙄
When is this on?

Jamie sang 'Maria' at West End Proms in July. Tony is in safe hands 😀

He sang a few songs a few songs at the theatres season preview yesterday. I think it's a bit of a different take because he doesn't really seem to have the operatic voice that that role is often sang with, he has more of a rocky tone to his voice. The women playing Maria is Puerto Rican and just graduating from the Royal Academy. The director talked about how they knew they wanted it to be her the moment she walked in and started introducing herself because she had such a great presence and they were all crossing their fingers that she could sing!
They showed the models of the set too and talked about it a bit, it's going to be the biggest set they have ever done and it does look pretty epic. It's based on pictures from the time where all the buildings of the west side are crumbling down and the frames of the buildings are exposed.
I suppose it will be compared to the REX version and that obviously had a lot of praise but i'm looking forward to this version. It will be quite different i think.

Curve are usually quite at putting their own stamp on shows, so it will be interesting to see what they do with this! It'll also be nice to have their Christmas musical not being Christmas themed

Thankyou for reviving the thread. I didn't want to be the only one constantly talking about it so kept quiet LOL
I've been disappointed at the lack of any hype for this really at all since even when it was announced last year. I guess the fact there was another new production of the show this year, and one that went down very well at that, has taken the wind out of it's sails somewhat and overshadowed it a bit.
From what has been realsed so far though this looks a sounds epic. The cast look very exciting, though i have to say the jury is out for me on whether Jamie Muscato quite has the right voice for Tony, but we'll see, and the bits and teasers of the set so far look epic and huge with it's whole derilict and crumbling city theme. It's exciting also that the show will have a 16 peice orchestra and i saw some instas of the sitz and it sounds fantastic.
I'm hoping to see the show next week.

Anyone know which set of orchestrations they are using? Please and ta As far as I’m aware, Mr. George Dyer has worked his magic and re-orchestrated it.

I’m sure whatever he does it will be an improvement on the rubbish orchestrations that Leonard Bernstein, Sid Ramin and Irwin Kostal wrote...

Mr. Dyer’s 20 piece orchestration for the Leicester Curve Bugsy Malone is one of my favourite things ever.

I have always admired the unique stamp that Curve always put on their 'Made at Curve' shows! They don't always work, but I think its bold of them to try.
So it will be really interesting to see how this works. They released some photos from around the building for Love Theatre Day, which included photos of the stage with them building the set, so that was a nice sneak peak!
Plan to see it some point in December, so will report back!

I wish it wasn’t such a ball ache to get to Leicester from Manc 😡 I was looking the other day cus I was thinking of coming up to Manc for Back To The future and it wasn't as bad a trip as I was expecting. Under two hours and only 1 change. I might do it.

I know, it’s via Sheffield. Pick your train wisely though because the stopping service Sheffield to MCR takes 90 mins as opposed to 50 mins for the one that only stops once.

Am I correct in thinking this is completely different to the Manchester Royal Exchange version?
And that neither production have plans to tour or come to London?
Please and thank you.

You don't half exaggerate, BB! It's nowhere near 90 minutes, more like 75...which is one minute for each year since the train was built.

You are right and I would think that one of them is aiming for town (most likely Curve because the pros arch set up is easier to transfer) but that's a guess.

IIRC from the WSS Royal Exchange thread, neither can transfer as the West End rights aren’t available due to the upcoming Broadway production

Not seen this show since I was a kid in the 80s (in a fairly average production at the Bristol Hippodrome) so would like to see it. Love Jamie Muscato so a shame I can't get to Leicester (although I am still protesting their removal of the central stalls aisles anyway lol)

From what I remember at the Curve new season launch night when they discussed West Side Story they mentioned being able to use the whole stage space for the set and weren’t constrained to make sure it fits into another theatre. At the time they were also talking about the transfer of White Christmas and how the Dominion Theatre has a smaller stage than Curve. It was implied that White Christmas was designed so that it had the potential to transfer whereas West Side Story won’t be. I’m really looking forward to this production as it’s my favourite ‘classic’ musical. Interestingly I think the last professional production I saw was at the old Haymarket Theatre back in 2002/2003.

Let me get this straight, BurlyBeaR . At 6:42 this morning, rather than listen to Steve Allen's review of the papers, or make a start on your advocado on toast, you were checking train times, just to (wrongly) prove a point. If you'd been to an evening performance of West Side Story in Leicester, you would not arrive in Sheffield to catch the 22:47 departure, and the 3:24 departure does only stop once en route to Manchester Piccadilly, though in Huddersfield, rather than Stockport. That's 2-0 to TallPaul, isn't it, the same as the result dahn t'Lane this Sunday afto?
