starting a thread for this because there isn’t one! Personally, I think this is one of the best pieces of telly I’ve seen in ages and everyone involved in it needs an award! I was obsessed for a while cos it blew my mind! Have been born at the close of 1980, I was 5 when the accident happened so I have no memory of it. I heard about it when I was older but never paid it much mind - it was something that was years ago and hundreds of miles away so didn’t affect me! I had no idea of the scale of it and how worldwide it spread and how it was covered up my the Soviet government! The whole thing was seriously eye opening for me! And the trio of Jared Harris, Stellan Skargard and Emily Watson were brilliant! Hope it wins some emmys!

It is indeed a fascinating, thrilling and shocking dramatisation of what went on. Only in recent years have parts of Wales been reopened to cattle grazing/farming after the radioactive fallout across Europe affected higher parts of farming land in Snowdonia and the radiation levels were too high. This image really demonstrates the global effect of the radiation leak in the weeks after the explosion: Who knows what else has been covered up over the years. Just this week Russia's Military Defence denied a release of radiation in a failed rocket launch, but scientists in a city near Finland detected a spike in radiation levels.... www.independent.co.uk/news/world/europe/russia-radiation-spike-explosion-rocket-engine-missile-test-latest-a9046721.htmlBack to the programme however, it is brilliant television and the level of attention to detail in it's production is inspiring. Was excited to see Jared Harris in this after his brilliant villainous role in Fringe a few years back.

I haven't got round to watching it yet but I was fascinated to learn that the director, Johan Renck, was formerly the early 90s Swedish dance music star Stacka Bo

The attention to detail is being widely praised but it is not a documentary and they have made some stuff up for dramatic effect.

It's great TV, and to answer the concerns of properjob I strongly recommend the accompanying podcast for each epidode where the programme makers explain the dramatic decisions that they have taken, what is scrupulously accurate (with sources), what has been adjusted for dramatic purposes (like the creation of compound characters) and what is sheer hypothesis. Unlike other shows of this type, they are trying to be explicit about the decisions that they took for dramatic purposes.

Yes I watched it a couple of months ago with a friend and we couldn't believe what we were watching. Truly incredible and gripping television, every episode a gem and the performances were fantastic all-round. It's my number 1 recommended show when people ask what series to watch next!

Do you think it will make it mainstream telly at some point? I'd like to see it, but I don't have the fancy streaming tv services.
I remember it well - I was in year 7 or 8 in North Wales and I remember the headteacher running outside into the school yard a few days afterwards, when it started raining, yelling at us all to get inside out of the rain. He was a big tough blokey bloke (his nickname was Commando, because the rumour was that he'd been in the SAS or something) but he was visibly panicking, so we were all a bit freaked out by it. We had an assembly about it that day instead of a French lesson, and he told us that we mustn't go out in the rain that year. (Not really a feasible plan for north Wales...)

Depends what you mean by 'mainstream'... It's been available on Sky for a while now.

As in standard telly that you don't have to pay extra for. I have Freeview, but not Sky/cable/Netflix/Amazon etc etc.

As Sky Atlantic have the rights to it, there's very little likelihood it'll end up on Freeview unfortunately. You can watch it on NowTV (which is Sky without the dish), so you could get a free 7 day trial and binge it. www.nowtv.com/watch-tv-shows-online

You can switch a Now TV subscription on and off at will, so you can pay £7.99 or whatever it is, for a month and then immediately cancel so there’s no danger of it rolling over. Then fill your boots with telly for a whole month. Then do it again a few months later when there’s new content on.

I've just signed on to Now TV recently and have worked through Big Little Lies and am now watching Succesion, with Chernobyl, Patrick Melrose and Save Me lined up. Some great content on it.

Halfway through this at the moment and it’s equal parts thrilling and terrifying. You can only guess at the lasting effects felt across Europe. Which makes me ever thankful to be living in nuclear-free New Zealand right now.
