Sorry if I've missed it but what has he been accused of doing (or not doing)?

He was the protege of Bill Kenwright, and not wishing to speak ill of the dead, it sounds like he learned a lot from him...

There are loads of comments from those ITK on here and Twitter about how awful Paul Taylor Mills is to work for but I'm struggling to find any detail on why. Ben Fletcher seems to have come closest in lifting the lid but has tweeted that he's struggling to get a journalist to write it up. Is there anything in the public domain other than Equity launching an investigation?

The fact that the statement says that the theatre couldn't work without "Investment and philanthropy" means he's firmly putting the blame on other people not participating in his vision - there is no humility in the statement at all. Even taking into account there was the pandemic during those five years, if someone can't make a 92 seat theatre work then perhaps they shouldn't be running a building.

Before the discussion progresses any further, please do not use this thread to bandy around unsupported rumours or to participate in a “pile on”. If someone is found to have been wrongdoing then it will hopefully be revealed with the evidence by a trade news organisation after they’ve investigated it fully. Until then please keep the speculation off TheatreBoard.
Posting your personal opinion of the theatre and its productions is fine. Pointing readers here to other news sources is fine.

If you’re on the Turbine Theatre’s socials, the case for the Defence is currently in overdrive.
Those video “testimonials”…

Such a shame if the Turbine closes. I enjoyed most of the shows I saw there, and I saw plenty!
PTM has always come across as slimy, but I do not know him so I would always be mindful of not judging a book by its cover.
However, from what I’ve heard on here, my impression might have been correct. Also, him blaming lack of philanthropy and investment seems like a low ball for me, considering the common denominator between Turbine and the failure that was Cake, was him.

I had a look and it comes across as ego stroking IMO. I agree, but it also comes across to me as a marketing team trying to drown out rumours. Seems like a load of waffle for all this for no reason.

I don't know if it's coincidental or not but Equity sent an email out last week saying they had serious concerns regarding how the Turbine engage performers and stage management and asked members to get in touch!

I always wondered HOW you could be AD of two venues at one time and everything else. I feel strongly that someone else could have done the job (and much better) I feel sorry for the people losing their employment. Frustrating.

This is a shame. The front of house staff at the Turbine Theatre are always so friendly and welcoming, and I've seen some very good shows there that wouldn't have been given a chance in a larger venue. There have also been several actors who took their chance there and used the opportunity to springboard to bigger things. No comment on the allegations. But ultimately, this is a venue where it would be hard to make a profit even when selling out all available seats. Almost every show there ended up seat filling. All I can think is that this just wasn't the right venue.

Don’t know PTM well enough to pass comment, time will tell here. Did performers and creatives get paid at the Turbine or was it like other small theatres that rely on goodwill by ‘carrot and a stick?’
I think I went to the venue once, being in a railway arch says it all, as it is the lowest possible venue for rent and normally the preserve of car repair workshops, so with a performance disturbed every 2 minutes by a passing train, this venue is not for me.

Aside from the Paul Taylor-Mills stories floating around, fringe theatre just isn't profitable. Yes everyone should be paid, but if there's limited seats, even a sold-out show is going to struggle to bring in enough funds to do so.
So what's the solution? I really don't know. Rents are so high.

The same week Equity launch a major investigation into the Producer and the venue, the venue's producer announces closure.
If that's not an admission I don't know what is.

Equity have been gathering evidence about the Turbine for a while now apparently. The Other Palace and Heathers are pretty much persona non grata for the MU. I would expect a new AD announcement at the Other Palace before the year is out.

For those who want to know about PTM's poor business practices, he went on a podcast stating that "actors’ wages are horrific" & "wages should go up", and agreed with Equity’s Stand Up For 17% campaign and six days later told the Heathers' band, sound & stage crews they were to be replaced by cheaper workers.
That's for starters.
