Has anyone else seen this? I went on Thursday and found it utterly dreadful. Truly a dire experience.
As a certified 'weirdo' growing up I escaped a lot into comics and the X Men were my favourite, the Dark Phoenix saga holding a special place in my heart and a lot of other fans too. I remember almost exploding with excitement in the cinema when in one of the earlier films they hinted that the next one would be the Dark Phoenix story. That got slated ( a lot more than I recall, hence the new version apparently) but I enjoyed it.
This, though is just a mess. The story is all over the place, any pretence at continuity goes ot the window. The acting is poor, the battles/set pieces relying mostly on arm waving and looks of concentration. Sophie Turner just seems too young, Evan Peters is wasted, Jessica Chastain looks like she has wandered in from a bad vampire movie and looks really ill, that could be intentional of course, but the almost white blond hair drains her and either her make up or the lighting makes her face resemble a skull with skin draped on it. Fassbender seems to regret ever signing up for this and looks hacked off, James MacAvoy continues to hold his fingers to the side of his head in a very dramatic fashion.
It's worst sin though? I was bored. In a less than 2 hour superhero movie, I was bored. The last Avengers was 3 plus hours and did not give me this feeling.

I thought it wasn't as bad as the reviews made out, but it wasn't good either.
I don't think all the acting was poor. The big positive for me was Sophie Turner - I thought she was great and really got across Jean's mental torment and descent into complete turmoil very well, I was really impressed and thought she just about managed to save the movie despite having to contend with some shockingly bad dialogue.
I thought Jennifer Lawrence was good as well with what little she was given, especially as she got some of the worst lines! On the other hand, Fassbender seemed to be phoning it in, and I got similar vibes from McAvoy. The younger ones basically had nothing to work with but were mostly ok. Jessica Chastain was completely wasted and her character was just cringeworthy, but she still managed to light up the screen - I thought she and Turner worked really well together.
I think overall the actors aren't to blame for this being a poor movie - the script is abysmal, the pacing is all wrong, the directing uninspired and the editing is not good.
For me the highlights were Turner, Lawrence and the wonderful Hans Zimmer score. That's about it. It's inoffensive enough entertainment for an hour and a half, but not something I'd see again.

Kermode nailed it on his Film Review for me anyway by saying that we are now more used to superhero 🦸♀️ films with more brains and heart than this and I suppose by comparing it to the likes of BP it doesn’t have the same X Factor(pun time)

I wonder who at Fox thought it was a good idea to let Simon Kinberg direct the film? It's a shame that they didn't let Logan be the final X-Men film as it was the perfect ending for both Wolverine and the series in general.

I have swerved this one - they already showed that they don't know how to adapt this story meaningfully for the screen - and judging by the BO figures most other X-fans have done the same!
Jennifer Lawrence is a very good actress who has seemed increasingly miscast as Mystique/Raven over the years. If she had been anyone else than, well, Jennifer Lawrence, they'd have re-cast the character by now I think. They struggled to give her anything meaningful to do in the last few films. Michael Fassbender was obviously bored stiff of pulling his concentration face while Magneto lifts a heavy thing in the last film I saw - which wasn't even the last X Men film, since I skipped Apocalypse.
The set-pieces where all the characters get a moment to use their one particular skill got dull years ago - a particular sin, when the MCU manages to make their superheroes teaming up and fighting together inventive and exciting.
I don't normally trash films without actually seeing them, but that's kind of the point - I haven't seen this film, but I feel like I might as well have.

I think it is a shame when people decide to judge something without seeing it - if it's something you know you won't enjoy then of course that's absolutely your prerogative not to see it, but I don't understand the number of people who have just decided to believe all the reviews and proclaim this film is in fact rubbish without actually bothering to see it.
Reviewing it after seeing it is a different thing entirely of course, then you can legitimately say it is rubbish if that's your view!

proclaim this film is in fact rubbish without actually bothering to see it. That seems to be the trend now though, doesn't it, especially with things that have online fandoms that seem to operate like the teen cliques in Heathers. "Hatewatch" is actually a term they use. I'm not into Marvel films, though was quite interested to see the reception of a film with female leads, but then this sort of social media hate thing happens and away it goes...

If the reviews would have been good, if they’d indicated that they had done something different with the material, I’d have seen it! Logan was legitimately brilliant. But I hated this movie back in 2006 when it was called The Last Stand. I don’t need to see it again.
They’ve made too many samey films over the past 17 years of this franchise. I don’t need to see this one because I’ve seen almost all of the others.
