Not true. Some of his music in Love Never Dies is superb and of the same standard as Sunset. I had drinks with ALW at a Ritz hotel a few years ago (true story) and he told me he thinks that’s the score he’s most proud of. In regards to negative comments. When you love 20 cakes and have been a fan of them for 30 years ..... if 1 comes out that disappoints you, surely you are allowed to evaluate rationally why that is. Simple. Cotton wool culture is equally as bad as an overly critical or negative one. Yes, I agree with you, some of the Love Never Dies melodies are up there with Sunset. But it's an exception I'd say. The Cinderella stuff IMHO is consistent with the majority of ALW's more recent efforts. And yes you are also right about cotton wool culture. What I was getting at though is that some have the tone that they'd already decided not to like stuff and took pleasure in so doing, rather than the rational evaluation you speak of. I think that the big noisy opening of ‘Beneath a Moonless Sky’ from LND is my favourite ALW moment, followed by most of ‘Sunset’. Great melodies.

What’s she dressed like that for? This isn’t the aesthetic of the show is it? That wig is appalling! I wondered if it was a nod to The Slipper and the Rose. Not that I'd expect the younger crowd they seem to be going for to recognise it.

So he used to judge a tune by whether he could remember it, and only thought those that he could remember were worth using.
Not he writes everything down immediately.
I have a feeling this explains a lot.

Well I think it's a cracking number. And CHF sounds fantastic.
Really looking forward to this one once we can get out and about again.

The sound engineering is a bit all over the shop. (30 seconds in - auto tune galore) That's not a dig to CHF, she's a good singer and they have to sort out levels and stuff ... but I am a bit taken aback that this got cleared. Also...there's I Can Hear The Bells (Hairspray) Little Shop...any other motifs from musicals that anybody can hear?
I think so far the second ballad that was filmed onstage is the stand out song for me.
Overall; I am QUITE confused about the thematics / marketing of this show. It doesn't know what it wants to be. That's my main issue.
Been some discussion about Love Never Dies, such a beautiful score. Really wish I had appreciated it more but did see both versions in London and watched the Australian stage production last year. (The Show Must Go On) - yes, I cried.

I'm not sure I'd call it a love song. It's hardly All I Ask of You is it? And not a duet. It's fine, and I like the big key change at the end, but I think in my current ranking it's: Far Too Late > Only You, Lonely You > I Know I Have a Heart > Bad Cinderella YES! Exactly ^^^

A musical written for generation Snapchat, however the music is written by a septuagenarian and the lyrics by a sexagenarian. so apply for your freedom pass and winter fuel allowance. David Zippel obviously hit big and won big for the Tony Award winning City of Angels, but what has exactly has he done since, he did Woman in White and it could be argued that the lyrics were leaden and clunky.
I would have thought that Andrew would be better off teaming up with Toby Marlow and Elizabeth Moss for this one.
It be interesting to see how the score represents the book, however on first previews, you could have a ‘bad Cinderella.’

For ‘School of Rock’ he had to heavily raid his own work from the 1970’s. His attempts at rap or anything “current” are cringeworthy. Why doesn’t he stick to what he is actually very good at?

...from it’s juvie lead being nearly 30 by the time it gets on. It’s Covids fault but it could turn into another Heathers age wise, story dependant.

Yes, I wasn't quite sure what we were looking at! Nice that it's keeping moving though. I saw CHF had a costume fitting too.

Re casting.
When will we hear the full casting for Cinderella. What are people’s thoughts on current cast for the show. I think Carrie will be great as Cinderella I love her voice.

I've just had another listen to Far Too Late. I wonder if it's actually going to be a duet (the sort where they stand in spotlights on opposite sides of the stage, and pretend the other isn't there). That would make it sound less long and repetitive. When will we hear the full casting for Cinderella. They're not rehearsing yet. I suspect when they are we'll get a few pictures, so presumably before/around then. (There is a video which shows a line of people sitting down. I'm not good enough to identify them all though.) I want to know who 'Jean' is as a character (listed third on the cast list from the workshop, played by Gary Wilmot then).

I quite like the songs released from this is far. I understand the criticism against ALW’s work, but at the same time I do wonder if this just... aimed at a younger audience? Take Bad Cinderella for example - ‘With One Look’ it isn’t, but which kids are going to sit through Sunset? As a song, ‘Bad Cinderella’ feels like it has more in common with Joseph and Rock of Ages (and to a lesser extend Wizard of Oz) than his more highbrow stuff. He tried to do that with Love Never Dies and Stephen Ward and they did nothing but lose him money, but he seems to find an audience when he aims productions at family/kids and it’s been that way for a decade now - and brings back his big west end shows for everyone else. It’s not a bad business model! I actually see a LOT of Joseph in this. Like the orchestrations already. ^^^ Good point.

ALW is on Jess Ware’s Table Manners podcast this week. He says Cinderella is going to “launch” Carrie. I wonder how Carrie feels about still being an ingenue after a lifetime in musical theatre 😁

Although do seminal original cast lead performances in blockbuster musicals that people become synonymous with really happen anymore.....

I doubt Equity would allow her to do Broadway.

Rehearsals begin this week! Hopefully a full cast announcement is imminent! Crikey...that's a bold move... Maybe they've decided to get the show rehearsed and tech-ed now so they're ready to open the minute restrictions are lifted?
