I love Carrie, she’s great. But god ALW is very out of his depth it seems. It’s as if he’s trying to cater to younger audiences by mimicking the sound of & Juliet/Six but it’s just not really working. I can’t put my finger on it but it just sounds like someone trying so hard to be edgy/cool.

I actually quite like the tune and think that CHF sounds great, but this is really let down by uneven lyrics and a poor orchestration. The percussion track in particular is just awful, and overall I think it would be better if it had a more rocky sound with the guitars brought forward in the mix and the synth toned down a bit. Between this and the track that was released from the stage of Her Maj's, I think there's definite promise for this show but I'm really hoping that there are some real belters that ALW is keeping under wraps until the show opens. Perhaps the stepmother will have a whopper of a number?

I hope that link works.
I have many questions. Why is he wearing an anorak? How much scaffolding is in that wig? Why wouldn't you move the shoes before filming? Where does he get his curtain material from, and could I afford it?

Oh, it hasn't and I don't know why.
Umm, if you go to the ALW Cinderella twitter, I was looking at the tweet from 28th October.

Predictably I guess but I really rather like it. Catchy, classic structure, key change, big ending! What's not to love!
Also chuffed to see it's a double CD so hopefully more sung through than School of Rock and Stephen Ward were.
If ALW had another JCS/Evita/Phantom/Sunset to give us, I think he'd have done it by now - it really is daft to expect that. I'd say the last 10-15 years or so would give an indication of what sort of thing we'll get. Whilst his most epic work may well be behind him, IMHO he remains a fantastic composer. And when this new original British corona delayed musical finally lands, I'm gonna be all there for it. Can't wait!

“Barking mad Cinderella” and “nutter”. I thought the world had moved on from this kind of language

I like the chorus - that's a definite earworm that will be stuck in my head for the rest of the day (it sounds Abba-esque). The first verse (melody-wise) reminds me of something from Evita. The F-words seem jarring and it also seems a bit odd to have F-words along with 'forget you' which is obviously a way of dropping an f-bomb without actually doing it. Incidentally, who wrote the lyrics? F-words? Is there more than one version, because the one on YouTubeMusic contains no F-words?

That's what they chose to put out as a first single? terrible tune and lyrics
"I'm not sorry that i hurt you'
She sounds nice.

There's a bit of in my own little corner somewhere in there. He can still write a tune if he puts his mind to it, but he's trying way too hard to be relevant.

It sounds okay but it sounds a little odd. I think it sounds like it was written on a piano, potentially as a ballad, then vocals were added to that instrumental and then they played around with it a bit and settled on a guitar mix.
Too many elements at play I think, and this is going to make me sound so northern, but Carrie’s vocal doesn’t work for me. Technically it’s flawless, but it’s too ‘Queen’s English’ - she seems to be pronouncing every single damn letter perfectly and it strips it of all personality.
Maybe that worked when it was just a piano song, but I’m not sure it works here in this mix.

As an opening, ‘introduction to the character’ type song it’s fine. No doubt it will stop & start, with bits of business going on.

Apologies theatreian didn't see your post from earlier! I always find it so awkward with ALW in interviews. Carrie came across really well and thought she did a great job. This just doesn't appeal to me at all I'm afraid.

Good god that new song is just terrible.
My non existent level of excitement about this show has just gone down even further.
ALW is so out of touch with what’s current and yet he’s clearly desperate to make this appeal to the younger generation.
Can’t wait to hear the rap number.

I've just seen the music video which has a mock period style. A bit like the film of Marie Antoinette a few years ago.
This really jars with the reference in the text to plexiglass
Anachronism can work but it just jars here.

Had little interest in School of Rock - never went to see it (a first for me with ALW) but have been intrigued with this - and I really enjoyed the new track. While I hope that he will do a new recording once it finally makes it to stage as it will definitely change again - but always excited to hear a new score from ALW

Where did you see that it was a double album? Is there any news on a release date for it? It is supposedly being released before the show isn’t it?
I quite like the new song. Yes, it is in a cheesy pop style, but the show is clearly a more modern take on the material, so he is trying to write in that style. Lloyd Webber can be very hit and miss, both in his shows and within the drama, but I always applaud how he creates a very specific sound world for each of his shows. I prefer ‘Bad Cinderella’ to the previously released ‘Far Too Late’ which I found overly repetitive and didn’t really develop or go anywhere.
Anyway, I can’t wait to see the show when it finally opens. It will certainly be an event!

Where did you see that it was a double album? Is there any news on a release date for it? If you order it from a certain well-known online retailer, for example, then it gives the number of discs as 2 under Product Information. The vinyl version consists of 3 records, so they clearly aren't *that* long playing! 🙂 The same well-known online retailer has the release date as Saturday 30 October 2021, which seems unlikely, unless it knows the date the show will actually open. ☹

No. Both songs I’ve heard from this show are both naff, sound like other songs from other shows and Carrie seems odd casting. Far Too Late seems like it’s better sung by a soprano!

Out of interest, why don’t they release a chart friendly version of songs like they used to? They used to release a version of a song from the show (ie I Know Him So Well) and they would chart well, giving the score a familiar appeal. People would go and see new stuff because they were familiar with the songs- rather than being familiar with the ‘names’ playing the leads.

I did wonder whether it has to be branded as "MY Cinderella" to differentiate it from R&H's? They should have just gone for modern and edgy and called it "Cinderz".
While I'm still not a fan of the skirt in the logo (whoever said it looked like a scrotum, I haven't been able to get past it, so thanks for that) I do like the E and R forming the glass slipper.
I feel bad being so critical early on, because I like ALW, and I've had a bit of a girl crush on Emerald Fennel ever since she was in Call the Midwife. I'm just having trouble with how the story is going to work. It's my favourite pantomime, I love the Slipper and the Rose, and have enjoyed quite a lot of spins on it, so it's not like I'm some sort of Perrault purist! I just can't quite get behind the idea of Cinderella being so full of teenage angst. The idea of the Prince being gay is a bit of a stumbling block to my idea of how Cinderells ends, but I'll presume she's written a good satisfying alternative ending.
I liked Far Too Late (even if it did sound a bit like the song from the new Beauty and the Beast), so if there are more songs like that, and Bad Cinderella is a scene-setting song (designed to pull teenagers in by sounding a bit modern) I might yet change my mind.
Basically, I'm impatient and struggling with not knowing the plot! Which is funny, because I wouldn't generally look up the plot before I go to something. I think because I feel I know how Cinderella should go, the songs and images we've had so far don't fit with that and that's why I'm not so keen.

The lyrics are pretty dire but not quite as bad as Zippel's work on The Woman in White. However, the project does have a vitality to it sorely missing from Stephen Ward, which just felt as though he wrote it because he was bored. Well, I think a lot of his post- Sunset shows were just written because he had nothing else to do.

I really want to buy the signed vinyl because ALW rarely does signed merchandise but I don’t want to shell out £40 until I know there’s going to be good content on there. Bad Cinderella hasn’t convinced me so far.
