I really feel for the cast and crew. I hope that they won’t be without income for 7 weeks but suspect that they will be left in a difficult position. Terrible.

That's an awfully long closure. Have they been given forewarning of something bigger. I fear my trip to London at the end of January is now about to go out of the window.

Either they feel they can't cope with the uncertainty and have decided to close themselves, or they know something is on the horizon about to be announced. But others will surely follow their example.
And big things involving International casts (I.e. Bonnie & Clyde) are also surely off now.

Think ALW:s pre empting a new year lockdown? I didn’t register it was February, thought it was January !! If other Shows begin to do the same, well then we def are going into January Lockdown

I know this is very cynical of me, but I wonder if it will actually reopen. And if so, reworked and/or with the same cast.
This is clearly a covid decision, but ALW seems to be unhappy with the show, so may want to use this time to change something.
But this is very sad for the cast, crew, and industry as a whole.

That was my thought too. If he can do it for such a long runner as Phantom then there's nothing stopping him doing it again

"Sadly this is the right thing to do"... and yet for his other shows, it isn't the "right thing to do". Wonder if we're going to see more rewrites...

Surely there's something else going on here? No other shows have announced closures for that long - Not even shows that are fully recouped and could "afford" to close that long - I wonder if he's closing for 2 weeks for Christmas/Covid (Echoing what other shows are doing) and then allowing three weeks for some creative/cast changes.....

Presume cancelling this was a financial decision - they likely haven't sold well in January and with covid numbers rising, willing theatre goers are harder to come by. Probably cheaper to close than to put the show on every night to a very small audience.

Do the cast get fully paid during this long shutdown or are they left to fend for themselves?

Surely there's something else going on here? No other shows have announced closures for that long It's probably just a matter of the uncertainty: a new variant for which we have little data and a vacillating Prime Minister for whom we have plenty. Better to allow a couple of months than plan for the shortest time possible and then have to keep changing the plans every week.

It’s a really tough time right now. It seems like everyone is getting covid or will get it at some point in the next several weeks. I can’t imagine they would want to open the show again just for a few more people to test positive and close. Maybe it’s for the best just to close right now and see where things stand in February.

Whereas Phantom has been unaffected. Maybe if Phantom also closes then similar action may also be taken.

Fair enough. I don't get that impression myself but I could be mistaken. Is Phantom closing for the same amount of time? Ah, I see what you mean. I hadn't thought of that. I remain sceptical, though. It would suggest that ALW is using COVID as an excuse, which seems unlikely to me, but may be true. If major changes are made during this period of closure it would suggest that you are right.
