If Cynthia in Sidmouth had never heard of Cinderella before, she certainly has now! Whether planned or not, ALW has played a blinder. Every media outlet is running the story, even the BBC World Service, all for free.

In ALW’s Interview onstage at the Gillian yesterday, he mentioned that another MAJOR musical will not be opening on time any longer, which again is terribly upsetting for the whole industry.
Only time will tell which show that is. I have a feeling the press release is imminent.

If he means a long runner reopening then Hamilton is in rehearsals, so is Phantom (with no sign of delay), &Juliet isn't opening for ages and pretty much everything else has already reopened. Dramatic effect again, or is he going to throw another tantrum and pull Phantom? |

Mary Poppins would seem the most likely to be subject to delay, given it's due to re-open prior to isolation rules changing.

That’s all very well but no one should be having a go at the cast or creatives. They want the show to go ahead as much as anyone. I’m afraid that anyone booking theatre tickets, trains and hotels at the moment are doing so with the risk of losing money if a show is cancelled. You’d have to be pretty dim to think the show will 100% go ahead. The people whining about wanting trains, hotels etc refunded have seriously lost the plot. I have train tickets and hotel bookings myself, partly to see Cinderella (mainly for Come From Away on Thursday). I got the email about cancellation and went online and booked a nice front row circle seat for Heathers instead. It's annoying, and it'll cost me money, but it's not like it wasn't always a possibility. |

My alternative turned out to be 3 double G&Ts (and a pint) in Soho. Heathers was sold out by the time I had the notification (was at an afternoon cinema screening). |

In today’s Daily Mail: The theatre impresario told the Daily Mail he will not lift the curtain until ‘common sense prevails’ after being forced to announce its cancellation hours before its first night with a full audience yesterday. The 73-year-old producer, whose show was to signal the reopening of the West End, said there has only been one positive case among the entire cast and crew. But under the Government’s isolation guidance, dubbed the pingdemic, he said he cannot continue the run. He said: ‘We do not want to see any final curtain on any part of the theatre industry. Theatre is the dynamo for so many jobs. As well as actors and production staff we create opportunities far beyond the stage - for chefs and waiters, costume hire and taxi drivers, bus drivers and dry cleaners.’ As a long time fan he’s getting harder to defend. If plans change last minute, there are a few smaller shows that are worth seeing - 'Pippin' at Charing Cross Theatre is wonderful, Above the Stag in Vauxhall have a lovely new cabaret lounge with various acts, and their main theatre reopens on 28th July with 'Tommy on Top' and Southwark Playhouse always have something interesting going on. Not theatre, but the 'Top Secret Comedy Club' in Covent Garden has some great comedy either for free or a small fee. I'm sure there are loads more for those that find themselves all dressed up with no place to go!
I had a phone call while on the train to London to say the show we were on our way to had been cancelled, so managed to get 2 tickets for Afterlife at the Dorfman for 20 quid each. I think if you're travelling to see something, have a backup plan in mind, maybe support a smaller venue/show where the tickets are cheaper and you might find an unexpected gem. Sadly, at the moment, anything can be cancelled at very short notice.

With my own experience last week with having 3 shows cancelled last minute, it was a scramble to around the WE to make last minute alternative arrangements. However, from the cancellations, I was able to see stuff that I hadn't planned on seeing (opening night at Joseph, Cinderella and a cast pairing at Constellations that was much better than the PC/ZM pairing I had originally booked for) and got some great deals from the box offices at these shows and had a great time watching them.
My heart goes out to all those affected. It's a frustrating time for everyone concerned. Speaking to box office staff last week, they said it's been a nightmare trying to sort out tickets as everything is happening so fast and just when they think they have cracked it, another problem rears its head and they are back to square 1.

Although some us are really good at last minute changes, know how to use apps for shows that also running and feel confident getting across town. Others would panic and flounder

Monday is the hardest night for a cancellation as there just aren't many options (especially not of the big name variety). The rest of the week is currently easy to fill and there's plenty of availability across the board with previously socially distanced seats being back on sale.

Mary Poppins would seem the most likely to be subject to delay I was thinking about MP today and Petula Clark 88 in particular as I can't imagine she must be that keen to fly in from Switzerland to do this at the moment. |

Both Anything Goes and Phantom hasn't had said anything so seems unlikely it's them and the only musicals which are opening before the 16th August are Mary Poppins, Tina or The Lion King.
ALW does seem to love his hyperbole with the suggestion of 2084 for Cinderella

Perhaps it's more that, if a lot of people on a show that was currently in rehearsals were pinged, it might put the rehearsal schedule back considerably. They'd spend all their time pre-Aug 16th isolating.
