All the shows seem to announce this time of year to drum up some Tony buzz. I can see this doing very well in London.

I think after watching the fiasco with Waitress' transfer; a theatre can make or break a show! I used to think it was all down to the material and marketing mix etc, and yes, a big part is, but the wrong house can kill off any hope for a production!

This will be the new Kinky Boots.
With producers David Ian and Michael Harrison, you have 2 British heavyweights, which means this will definitely happen.
With Frozen confirmed and Mean Girls looks definitely, things look good.

Shaftesbury? I don’t think Juliet will be around that long.

This could easily go into any of the mid-size house in the West End including the Victoria Palace, Hamilton could be done by then.

“Good day Doctor Brewster. I said GOOD DAY!” So this is one film you have actually seen? I first saw it at the Spa in Bridlington. For some reason, it was preceded by a short about the Royal Navy delivering humanitarian aid to a hurricane hit Caribbean island.

I would love Tootsie to be playing around the same time as &Juliet. Michael is now a Broadway actor (and not a soap opera actor like the film). The show he auditions for and stars in is a hip/woke version of Romeo & Juliet and he plays Juliet's sassy no nonsense nurse.

I do have an embarrassingly long list of films that everyone else seems to have seen but me. However this isn’t on it 🙂.

Just watched the film for the first time. Really great! Interesting how they have changed it from a soap opera to Broadway for the stage production but I've heard a lot of good things.

Just saw the film for the first time in decades. God it's bloody awful. Not even Jessica Lang and Terri Garr can save it. It Might Be You is the only redeeming feature. And all that I've seen of the stage version looks equally bad, if not worse. Yazbeck's scores are always a bit hit or miss, but this is incredibly weak and derivative. And if you're going to update and rewrite it, why stick so closely to the awful drag of the 80s? Granted Santino is prettier than Hoffman, but the whole look is just so dated. Surely they could have found a better look. And in the fairly insular world of musical theatre, how would any unknown actress of his age ever be seen for a leading role in any show? He wouldn't get near a casting director without being found out.

The 'dated' look is on purpose. The show absolutely gives you no *real* indication of when it's set. There is no trace of a cell phone or any technology. It's as BROAD-WAY as it can get with a broad, and brassy score with an overture to boot. (how many of those do you have around?). They make it look timeless because their intension is to make it run as long as it can and have the throwback '90s Broadway musicale genre. Just watch footage of The Goodbye Girl.
I actually think the score is just fine. I Know What's Going to Happen is a killer of a number. I take a different issue with the show. In 2019, are we still laughing about a man in a dress? How many crotch tucking jokes do we need to sit through, and how often must we witness a straight character having gay panic when he finds out they've been courting a woman who is a dude? How would an audience member, who is trans, feel about when this is the reality of their daily lives that is being turned into a joke? And how would working women, actresses or otherwise, feel when watching a show about a man taking credit and success by cheating and manipulating the system? These things happen and they are topical, but the show and its creators take a different approach and don't even attempt to turn this into anything meaningful.

I do too, as a period piece. And to be honest, I also thought the show was entertaining, despite being problematic.

I could imagine Rob Houchen in the lead role.

Seriously Seriously?? Rob deserves better. Jason Donovan would be ideal though!
