What's the ultimate requirement of a good production for you?
Walking home from the theatre last night, I was replaying a scene in my head. The scene really captivated me and as I replayed it, an involuntary "Yeahh!" came out loud in appreciation. I was walking alone, but who knows what anyone walking past would have thought of a stranger walking up the street suddenly exclaiming "Yeah!"! Considering this, I realized I've done this before.
So for me, I'd say "a good production should..." make captivate me to the point that I buzz afterwards.

I'm trying to get myself to a point where if I die on the way home from the theatre, I won't regret whatever I've just seen being my last show ever before I died. So while I'm happy for most shows to be "something I won't still be regretting on my deathbed", the mark of a good production for me is probably "damn I could die now and that would be absolutely fine".

I remember my reaction to seeing McKellan in Richard III many, many, many years ago. I left the theatre and walked around in a daze for 30 minutes just processing what I had seen.
I can't honestly identify what provoked such a strong reaction - but I vividly remember being on the streets afterwards.

I do also really enjoy the shows where the first thing I do when I get home - or even when we reach the interval - is head straight to the website to book a return trip.

A good production for me is one where I have such a buzz after it that I just wanna talk about it and recommend it to others 😆

I've booked in the interval a couple of times.
For me something is great if I want to experience it a second time and I get more out of it the second time.

Aww cool topic!
For me, a good production should...
- Make me feel something intensely - some productions give me surge a surge of pure, golden JOY that I just feel like I've been reborn. Sounds cheesy, but this is what War Horse does to me!
- Have at least one character or scene, or piece of dialogue, that grips my imagination and won't let go, or makes me see something in a different way - still reeling from Fiennes's RIII, and Ifans's King Berenger
- Play over and over in my mind, sometimes so much I can't sleep (Mary Stuart and the Tennant RII both did this to me - for the latter I was in my hotel room in Stratford absolutely BUZZING, like I'd just run a marathon and I can't explain why.)
- Prompt a return visit - sometimes booked immediately afterwards
- Make me want to buy the script so I can keep a memento of it forever

A good production makes me want to steal bits of it to use in something else (whilst making sure any borrowings aren’t too close enough for it to be obvious!)

And agree with others - for me it's something that's even BETTER on every repeat viewing - I guess that means there are layers and layers to be appreciated. Never booked again in the interval before but have booked again as soon as I have got home. And whilst incredible theatre can be utterly minimalist, for me personally a wow factor and complete sensory overload in design and lighting goes a long long way. |

Make me enjoy being part of the world of the play. Make me feel like I'm happy just to be in that world and in the presence of those characters, and would like to watch them even if they were not doing anything.

A good production should stop me from thinking about my work, weather, bills, uncomfortable theatre seats, how hungry I feel and what I would like to eat after the show - basically should make me forget about the world outside the theatre. It happened to me when I was watching "Downstate" last week.
Really good productions stay with me. I still think about them months after seeing it and I want to tell everyone who would listen how good these shows were even though they are now history. It doesn't happen often though.
(Oh, and there should also be a bit with a dog.)

A good production should make me forget everything else other than what is happening on stage at that moment. Both of these hit the nail on the head. There are a few times it has gone beyond this (see below), but generally I want to be completely drawn in for the time I'm there and come away feeling glad I got to witness it. I don't necessarily always feel like I want to see something again, sometimes that once is enough. The first time I saw Les Miserables, I listened to nothing else for months. I wanted to know everything about it. Similar with Memphis, I looked up the era, the inspiration for the characters etc. I love something like that, be it theatre, a film or TV show, whatever, that opens you up to a time or situation that you may never thought about otherwise. |

...have an amazing effect on you.But not as follows...first time ever seeing Blood Brothers came out of theatre and was sobbing 😭 so much nearly got taken out by a taxi.True story! Lucky escape,I thought and then did it AGAIN after coming out of Les Mis for first time ever.Maybe should go in theatre bar for an OJ to recover before ‘hitting the streets’ lol
