But is he going to sing? I'd be up for it if we got a song or two out of him or he was talking about his life but if its just him talking about the novel and reading a bit I don't think I'll bother.

I imagine most TB members are on the LW Theatres mailing list, but just in case, tickets for Michael Ball at the Cambridge Theatre on 17 October are now available at half price.
Michael Ball book launch
As the price of admission includes a copy of Mike's debut novel, it's almost a free night out. You don't have to put the heating on either, so it's a win win. 🙂 The book costs a tenner in Waterstones so you're only paying a tenner to see him being interviewed, do a reading and if you're lucky an autograph and a selfie with Mr Ball himself.

Each ticket includes a signed hardback copy of the book. Back row tickets are only £13.66 as well. Not a bad deal!

That was actually a great evening at the Cambridge! Lots of theatrical anecdotes and laughter from both Mr Ball and from Alex Jones…looking forward to reading the book!

I was less than impressed with Michael Ball's incredibly mean and untrue anecdote (just days after she died) about Dame Angela Lansbury mistakenly reciting the stage directions as Mme Arcati in Blithe Spirit as she was fed all her lines by earpiece. Contrast that with Jemima Rooper's remembrance of working on the production, where Angela was sharp as a tack, knew all her lines but did have a friend as prompt on the earpiece for reassurance rather than necessity. Taking cheap shots at the recently deceased just makes you look like a complete Tw*t, but Ball seems to have all the subtlety of Boris Johnson.

Do you think that a person whose phone goes off in a theatre ever has a good nights sleep again in their life?
No, Michael Ball, I'm not going to give you my phone to talk to my 82 year old neighbour whose wife died yesterday. Just dig a grave next to her for me too, please.
If there's an upside, can't see me getting cold this Winter as I break into a sweat when I think of it. 2am, 3.30am, 4.30am ...
(left my reading glasses in my overnight bag in the Cloakroom, hand on heart thought phone was on silent).

londonmzfutz be kind to yourself! Not sure how Mr Ball handled it but you're only human, people do far, far worse intentionally in theatres and and never give it a seconds thought because they have no shame.

karloscar I suspect MB is jealous that he will never be as good or as favourably adored as Lansbury. I have not heard positive things about him and his 'acting' his acting is atrocious

I have not heard positive things about him and his 'acting' his acting is atrocious Angela was in another galaxy compared to his star rating. I did like him as Edna Turnblad, though much of that was stolen from Harvey Fierstein and originally Divine. As you say, playing a caricature in drag is stretching the limits of his acting ability.

Thank you xxx - I put a bit of a comic twist into my post but honestly, I felt / feel actually sh*t about it. Don't remember a lot about the second half.

Is there a version that isn’t behind a paywall? What does Ball actually say? Thanks

Have to admit, Michael Ball doing a show with norovirus is both admirably but also reckless. I get his annoyance at cast members pulling out because they've partied too hard but if you're genuinely not well, it's best to rest.

Agreed, if Mr B had norovirus and worked with it, it could easily have infected the whole cast and crew. Not a responsible or admirable move. I worked for the NHS and if norivirus was evident you’d definitely not be allowed to work, in fact they used to shut whole wards down for what they called deep cleaning.

Has anyone read his book? I’ve just finished it and I’m staggered at how even now, he’s completely blinkered to how dreadful the 2023 Aspects was.
Interesting to hear though how he hated the poster- like we all did.

I have read Michael's book (I actually listened to the audiobook, which I would definitely recommend), and absolutely loved it! I am a huge fan though, so may be slightly biased.
I adored the 2023 ASPECTS after hating previous productions, so think his view of it is completely valid. I just didn't have the problems with the material that others did. Michael is also very close to the show, so it is no surprise that he feels the way that he does.

Interesting to hear though how he hated the poster- like we all did. Interesting. What did he say about it? That it was only ever meant as a placeholder until they could use production shots in advertising. Obviously by that point- the show was doomed. It’s so heavily photoshopped that they also made him really skinny on the original draft and he asked them to change it to what he actually looked like. Good for him.

Does he mention anything about the closing notices that made it sound like it was coming back for a second run?

Does he mention anything about the closing notices that made it sound like it was coming back for a second run? No… just that the show was due a break in August for (I assume his holiday?) and it seemed the best time to close it. The advance was only £400k and the forecast sales were not good enough to keep it running any longer.

If I understand that badly written linked article correctly, Ball already had six points on his licence, and was done for two further offences of 35mph on a 30mph area within five months. I know that's how the totting-up system works, but seems unduly harsh to me. It's very easy to unintentionally let your speed creep up by 5mph, especially on roads that were designed for and originally had much higher limits. Meanwhile, boy racers, deliberately speeding much more excessively in-between cameras, get off scot-free.

It's really not easy to keep going 5mph over the limit 'accidentally'. Once maybe, but you learn and don't do it again. Roads near me have lowered their limit and you just remember.

It’s what happens to any driver that is repeatedly caught speeding. Including boy racers.

Oh the sanctimony in this thread is off the scale. Everybody stop and look at virtuous ol’ me. 🤣🤣🤣 Personally I've never had points on my licence, and that's really not that uncommon. But as has been mentioned, this isn't once or twice. He's been caught numerous times. While I wouldn't make a big deal out of it usually, I will challenge anyone who tries to normalise speeding and excuse a repeat offender. He got caught, he got the points. Seems perfectly fair to me, the weirdness is people saying he's been treated unfairly. Its also really not hard to drive in the speed limit🤣 I'm actually shocked people don't care. Hope you or a loved one don't get hit by a car one day.
