I know some members of this household are going to want tickets for the Jonny Greenwood prom. That's still the case after the underwhelming Thom Yorke performance with the Labeque sisters in the Minimalist Dream House concert at the Barbican last week. (Though I have to admit that we are not Radiohead fans and had only booked the tickets for the compositions by Caroline Shaw and Timo Andres).
I see that John Wilson is doing 'The Warner Brothers Story'.
Look forward to getting the brochure and going through it with a pen to make a wishlist.

Quite disappointed by the John Wilson prom. The music listed does not sound all that appealing to me I'm afraid. Well at least I dont have to sit for 3 hours in front of a computer screen trying to book.

I have only taken a quick look on the website but there wasn't much to really interest me. The Wilson Prom lacks real coherence to me - it feels an uncomfortable blend of film score and movie musical. He does great work with both - but I think putting them together in one event is far less satisfying.

I usually find at least half a dozen I'd like to go to, end up going to 3 or 4 depending on dates. This year, there was only one 'maybe' (and it wasn't the JWO) so I'm going to save my pennies and listen/watch from home!

I don't tend to go to many Proms but this year I'm not sure I'll be going to any. I'd be interested in Benvenuto Cellini were it on a Friday or Saturday but not when it's on a Monda given I wouldn't get home till after midnight. Why do they have to schedule long-ish opera on week nights? See also Semiramide a couple of years ago, which I got a ticket for then couldn't go when the running time ballooned so I wouldn't have got home till after 1am on a Sunday night.

The Sea Hawk is well known; Wilson might have chosen excerpts from Anthony Adverse, which I think is Korngold's finest score. |

Relatively painless booking once they resolved the technical problems. Ended up booking more for other people than for myself, but I'll be at 4 this year, which isn't bad.
Interestingly the John Wilson prom isn't even in the top 5 most planned proms this year, when it's usually number 1 or 2 and almost instantly sold out. Just goes to show that the theme really hasn't interested people. I didn't bother with it.
It's a shame there's no concert version of a musical this year, but at least I have tickets for The Magic Flute and the Nina Simone tribute.
Just noticed on the Albert Hall live blog that nothing is sold out yet, which is very unusual even with the tech problems. Maybe the ticket prices are finally putting people off. I've booked cheap tickets in the circle for all of mine, but cut the number I've booked considerably as my sofa and Radio 3 is a much cheaper option (plus a load of the ones I might have gone to are being broadcast on BBC4 as well).

There doesn't seem to have been much advertising or hype of it on the BBC this year. There was Wimbledon for a couple of weeks but this week I haven't seen one plug for it.
There was always a guy in glasses who used to be to the left of the conductor at the front on the barrier every year on Last Night of the Proms and conducted along. He was used to advertise the Last Night one year on the TV. Does anyone know if he still attends the Proms? |

I've seen the trailer with the Richard E Grant voiceover quite a few times this week. I don't really know what's coming up though - I know I looked at the schedule months ago and can't remember anything jumping out at me.
I'm hoping for a glut of Suzy Klein, I love her.

Well, I attended my first ever Prom this afternoon (the John Wilson one). Grabbed a standing ticket online this morning.
It feels like quite a spectacle being inside the Royal Albert Hall.
I got there close to the start and was surprised the Arena (floor) area wasn't all that full. So I was able to get a second row standing position. The seated areas were fuller.
It was a decent Prom and I enjoyed it, mostly for the spectacle and experience. Some odd choices of music and it didn't all match the website. Quite a few musical theatre tunes played and sung well. I don't feel like I should spoil them, but it's worth watching this evening's repeat version (which is on TV and radio).
There were already people queuing up for the evening Prom when I left the afternoon one, so that's probably going to be a lot busier.

The John Wilson Orchestra Prom was a great run through of music from the Warner Brothers studio back catalogue. Louise Dearman was amongst the many talented soloists and Kate Derham looked like she was wearing a pair of 1970's curtains or auditioning for Abigail's Party.

I watched the John Wilson Orchestra Prom on TV & while it was enjoyable overall I was glad I'd decided not to see it live as there was too much purely orchestral music compared to the amount of vocal music for my personal taste. Of the singers I really liked Louise Dearman & Matt Ford's performances & thought Kate Lindsey was fine in her brief solo (though I was rather surprised to hear Katie Derham talking about needing a big voice for the number as when I saw Lindsey live at the ROH 3 years ago I thought her voice on the small side for a large auditorium). I wasn't so keen on Micaela Bennett. I do wish the cameramen wouldn't do such extreme close-ups on the singers, it really isn't flattering.

The Gallery is the place to be if you want to lie down! There seem to be many more empty seats at the Proms these days than even a few years ago, the pricing is getting a bit silly. I think Arena or Gallery are great value though. |

I think Arena or Gallery are great value though. True! I snuck up to the gallery for the second half of one once. It was great. Musicians sat around following pieces with scores, some lying down like you say. A real experience unlike anywhere else! |
