I like the idea of Cross theatre: patrons are allowed a two minute rant on any subject before the show starts. It might be better to allow rants either in the interval or at the end, so the audience can let off steam if the productions are awful!

Nice in theory, but only if the theatre has a capacity of about ten people: imagine if you had a bumper crowd of Parsleys having a rant before a show starts?

I noticed the building that will house the new Nimax Theatre is almost complete, I assume they're planning to open it whenever the Elizabeth Line opens.

I noticed that also, when cycled past last week.
No reason for them to wait for Crossrail to open, when the new Battersea extension on the Northern Line opened last month TFL only gave 2 weeks notice, as not to get bad publicity if it didn’t open, I expect similar to Crossrail opening at very short notice. Theatre needs a lot more notice than that. Also great that part of Charing Cross Road is now 2 way, used to be a pain on a bike, turning right to get to Charing Cross.
However let’s not disregard that London is getting a new theatre and a new underground metro line, which both will be soon open.

I’m excited to see a new theatre opening, it should be pretty small if it’s in-the-round with only 600-ish seats. Just hope they don’t ruin it by going with the same godawful seats they have at NIMAX’s other theatres.

Just received notification of a planning permission request for a new theatre in White City (and the option to object - not that I would).
Not too many details, but it looks likes it's the same company as the Troubadour Wembley and almost across the road from where the Troubadour White City used to be. A temporary structure for 10 years according to the letter.
They took the previous one down in about a week, so I wonder if it's the previous theatre due to come out of storage (and how long it will take to re-erect). Perfect area for a theatre too.

It's probably the same theatre, is it anywhere near Westfield? The address given is: Land bounded by 58 Wood Lane and Westway London W12 7RZ Which I think is the other side of Wood Lane (the previous site I believe has since been built up) Edit - have found the planning application online (if anyone has the patience to go through the many attachment): public-access.lbhf.gov.uk/online-applications/applicationDetails.do?activeTab=summary&keyVal=R2ZDS8BIFL000And looks like the theatre will be called Troubadour Light CityPlanned opening date April 2022. It does look like it's the same physical buildings as the previous theatre. The location is on the land where Imperial College are building, the other side of the tube line.

Not a new theatre, but there's an article in The Stage, behind the paywall, about plans to link the Gielgud and Sondheim Theatres with a new foyer and bar.

I think the original plan included a studio theatre on the roof called the Sondheim. I think this is those plans revisited, as the new foyer will be at a high level, linking the Gielgud's dress circle with the Sondheim's grand circle, and could be used as an events space - which is where I assume the originally-planned Sondheim would have been.

while we're here, I cycled past this recently - under the radar but significant. A bunch of elite cultural brands adding capacity out east. If you click the link and look at the first photo, from right to left: Sadler's Wells - a new mid-size auditorium to complement the 1500-seater near Angel a new BBC concert auditorium, studios, etc London College of Fashion under one roof (6,500 students) V&A adding huge display space ENB have already set up home in Docklands stratfordwaterfront.commonplace.is/overview

I was thinking 'how do you create a shared foyer?' but I guess there must be unused space between the two buildings to be able to create it. IIRC the plans for the Queens/Sondheim Theatre were more extensive with the frontage being rebuilt to match the Gielgud and the dress circle would have been removed and replaced by a new single dress circle.

Yes, that got scrapped about a year ago - new priorities, etc. Intention had been a joint space with the V$A.

Good for Southwark although I can't help thinking two venues a mile or apart will cause confusion and lead to folk missing this first act.

Quite looking forward to Southwark's new theatre in Newington Butts although I wonder what will happen to the old place? I assume it'll be redeveloped as new homes.

Was always a temporary arrangement but thankfully landlord is in no hurry. It'll become another high rise in turn, matching the new Travelodge that has grown in between Southwark and the railway line. Great to hear a new London Bridge location has been found after the space in the redeveloped station was lost. And hopefully the new Elephant and Castle location cannot be far off opening (though I've been told "it'll be open this time next year" for several years running haha.

So eventually they will have the location at Elephant (300 seater), and two spaces at London Bridge (150/250 seaters). That’s quite impressive for sure. Presumably the current space will continue for the next few years alongside the new Elephant location (when it eventually opens). They will certainly need some ambitious programming with an additional stage.

The old Granada cinema in Hoe Street E17 is being made into a theatre for the Soho Theatre. I saw the Who here in about 1966.The Rolling Stones and Beatles also played here. There is a very big auditorium and you felt you were at somewhere special. It has since been used as a church and for raves so may well have been damaged. There was a renown organ that could rise out of the floor. No car parking but good access from Walthamstow Central Station and buses. I wish them well. There is currently no theatre in Waltham Forest. So it may fill a need.
The latest news is that it will have a "soft launch" in November 2023 and a grand opening in February.

Very near to me so hopefully they have a decent programme with things I would like to see. Isnt/wasn't there a small theatre above a pub somewhere in Walthamstow?

The theatre in Walthamstow will be 1000 seats which is a good size especially for comedians who perhaps have a fanbase but couldn't fill an arena or the Hammersmith Apollo.
The Victoria Line to Walthamstow Central is super quick so it won't be difficult to get to.
