Booked for a matinee at Richmond, prefer to sit and chill on the Green beforehand rather than the melee of Trafalgar Square.
Could be doubled with Out of Water at the Orange Tree to make a day of it.

I imagine the reviews for this one will be very mixed. From listening to the audience on the way out, they liked it or loathed it.
A cast of five white people perform a play about racial diversity and meeting quotas (or what in the UK we’d call positive discrimination). It’s framed around all the usual marketing stereotypes, like how do you get “one of each type” in publicity photos.
It asks the question, when is it fair to be overlooked as a white man? What if you’re part of the system that put that process in place?
It’s a long one.
Advertised run time is one hour forty with no interval. This started 10 minutes late at 7:40 and didn’t finish until 9:30, so a long time to cram into seats with no arm rests.
Alex Kingston is on stage throughout and very good.
My biggest frustration, a group of women near the back treating it like a comedy, removing all the tension, particularly during one long speech that future stage school students will love. The fact it’s based around the US school system will also be a barrier to some.
I liked it, but would like it a lot more if they tightened it down to 1 hour 30 and briefed the audience on what to expect. It definitely won’t be for everyone.

I’ve heard the actor playing the son in this is from the original production in NYC and steals the show and worth the price of ‘admission’ (haha)

Great performances from all - and yes, the 'son' is brilliant. 1 hour 45 or so last night. I found it really entertaining - Dr Tom's précis above is accurate. Full house. I would highly recommend, especially on a TodayTix sale ticket!

I saw this Tuesday and am still processing exactly what I thought about it, but I think I'm tending more towards the Vulture article about it than the rave reviews it got in New York.
These are all deeply unattractive people, and what the playwright successfully does is raise the questions in a rather more original way, letting the stereotypical liberals twist in the wind as the story progresses. But ultimately I thought it was just a bit too misanthropic to appeal to me. I agree that Ben Edelman as the son gives a great performance, but I thought Sarah Hadland was badly miscast - I couldn't get a handle on her character at all and her accent wanders all over the place. At least at the Trafalgar I didn't see the same response to the son that was reported in the Vulture article, but there's time yet - by the way, be aware that the Vulture article reveals a lot of the plot (as it needs to in order to discuss it).
It's an interesting play and I'm glad I saw it, but I wouldn't go as far as to say I enjoyed it.

Read that Vulture review after seeing the US production and thought it incredibly myopic. You either share the reviewer's viewpoint or you are a 'creepy' (word used twice) racist, and it makes big assumptions about the playwright's intentions which are actually completely up for debate.
Comes across very emotional, this play challenged my beliefs and rather than process a reasoned response I proclaim the play and the people who enjoyed it to be wrong. Reviewer is clearly educated and intelligent which is interesting.
The play is willing to get into the hypocrisies, ironies and nuances of real life. The reviewer is not and seems to conclude that it is inherently a shortcoming for an artwork "to reach the bleak conclusion that, in the end, we’re all hopeless hypocrites."

Oooh that's positive, I booked a cheap ticket based on this thread and now if the pretenious wank puffins at Time Out hate it, I reckon I made the right choice!! Here's hoping for a slating from The Daily Heil and I'll know I'm on a winner  |
